When Kim Deal's not singing through a distorted mic with sister Kelley in an elaborate Mayan World Series in Brooklyn, she's back in the fold with the reunited Pixies. The group hit the Palladium in Los Angeles (for the first of three nights) to launch their nine-city 20th Anniversary Doolittle tour. Speaking of distortion, No Age got things started. Our trusty photographer Andrew Youssef tells us there were microphone problems for the first couple of songs, but that Dean and Randy, who should be getting used to performing with punk legends, hit their stride toward the end of the set with "Eraser" and "Miner," etc. Throwing a bit of a curve ball, the Pixies opened with B-Sides before jumping into "Debaser" and the promised complete run through of Doolittle, which was followed by two encores. (Besides saying "Gracias" between a few songs, Deal jokingly asked if anyone was coming the following night because they were playing the same thing.) The set was up and down as might be expected on a first night, but the group received a huge ovation that brought them out to center stage for a deserved -- if not for last night, for all time, or whatever -- group bow. Earlier this week we unveiled MySplice III, Stereogum & team9's annual original mashup compilation. We also requested an album cover and promised a prize to the best one. We got a lot! Thanks. You don't suck at Photoshop. We encourage you to grab the winning .jpg and tag your MP3s with it. Since we got so many great submissions, we're also gonna display a dozen alternatives in case you like one of those better. But obviously we are experts and made the right decision.

For the third year in a row, we've turned to master bootlegger team9 to take some of our favorite songs of the year and mash them together. On Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III you'll hear familiar blog hits from artists like Lykke Li, of Montreal, the Breeders, Bloc Party, Crystal Castles, and Beck remixed with beats and vocals borrowed from some of the year's most inescapable pop hits. (There are some oldies thrown in, too.)
As always with our original compilations, you may download all the tracks for free, as individual MP3s, ZIP or torrent. There is no better way to celebrate 2008 for no money.

Traversing Grant Park is draining when it's 140°, so Satellite Party provided an opportune time to get hydrated. But damn if it didn't seem Ash & Pete were on our tail. (We get delusional when we're thirsty.)
Miss Simpson's given us a lot to blog about over the years. Mr. Wentz, too. So don't act all surprised we wanted the couple's take on the forthcoming Cure LP. Pete's burly bodyguard didn't let us play paparazzi for long, though we'll try again tonight. We did manage a few surreptitious snaps before everyone on-site save Eddie Vedder headed to Daft Punk.

The drop box is closed, submissions are in, and it's time to turn the reins of this thing over to you guys. Before you head out into your weekend of fun, we wanted to remind you that there are just FOUR DAYS left before we close the ingeniously titled Stereogum Presents: Another Freakin' Green Screen Contest (Starring Modest Mouse). Sorta tells you all need to know, but here's the quick recap: Make a video for the Modest Mouse cut "Fire It Up" using some provided video assets and whatever personal/public domain footage you can get your paws on, submit it by May 22nd, and have it voted upon by your Stereogum reading peers. The big winner will fly round-trip (with hotel) to a gig of your choosing on MM's next US tour. AND we'll throw in an autographed CD, a special-edition CD, and a vinyl copy of We Were Dead... -- so you can be a multi-audio-formatted MM fan with a great live-show story and an enviable frequent flier mile tally.
