Thank G It’s F. Right? What a weekend coming up! If you’re going to Coachella, don’t miss these performances. If you’re going to the R&R Hall Of Fame ceremony, don’t expect Axl. If you’re Twitter.com, don’t listen to Frances Bean Cobain because what would the internet do for traffic without Courtney Love’s (140) character assassinations. But let’s also pause to acknowledge the week that was: In NYC we had the best man in the game (via Pulp) and the best machines in the game (via Kraftwerk) and the best Based God in the game (via Lil B). And on the internet, we had the best commentary in the game (via YOU GUYS), so click on below to see the best and worst of your contributions before my compliment to your general wit lingers to long and flips from cute to unctuous. GET ON WITH IT I love you:

Poor Frances. Her mother will go to the ends of the earth to humiliate her. I’d heard that Dave Grohl arranged to meet with Frances because he hadn’t seen her since she was a baby and because they both realize they will be business partners and eventually their children will be business partners. Courtney is not a part of that equation now that Frances is 18 and free of her. Nirvana is free of her. Courtney is a scary cock-roach and Grohl should sue her and hit her where it hurts: her drug purse. |

It’s not really very similar to how I imagine my list would be, but it seems fairly well thought through (especially for NME). |

i wonder what the smell of her vagina is going to be like this time? I saw her in concert back in 1998. I had front row seats, and let’s just say the smell was overwhelming. |

I’m sorry, maybe i’m just old school, but i still consider music making an art form, and most artists know that starving is part of the trade. It’s funny how people so readily make this argument, but it’s because of our capitalistic culture that we are driven to assume that because one has success in their field, that they deserve a lot of money. In a perfect world yes, however that’s never going to happen. But nobody is questioning any of these bands ability to make a living, James Mercer isn’t starving and living in a box (as far as i know.) Bands, like all artists, understand that they have a certain responsibility, to be true to their art form, or to make a compromise and buy into whatever commercializing opportunities they’re given – which I’m sure there are a lot of. The Arcade Fire could have just released that song on their own just as readily, but by doing it tied to a major commercialized movie (no offense “the hunger games” fans,) the whole thing just puts a bad taste in my mouth. Now I’m wondering, “did the studio come to them asking to do this?” if so “how much of this was influenced by them?” As a listener I feel like i have a responsibility to be concerned over how much of this was a true artistic expression, and how much was marketing. My point here is that no band should have to go to these lengths just to “continue making music rather than not and then breaking up because they can’t afford to keep going” – as you so eloquently put it. The whole thing just makes me question whether they’re in the business for the wrong reasons (i.e. money.) Let’s not forget how commercialization is what soiled modern F.M. radio and mainstream music, flushing most art driven bands into the independent scene in the first place. And in recent years we’re beginning to see the commercialism machine do two things: Before i end this completely repetitive rant, i’d like to raise the question: What’s more valuable: the money made from your music? Or the pride of writing a beautiful song that connects you to your listeners? Or better yet, which one is more likely to stand the test of time? tl;dr dignity > money |

Congrats Simon!
Simultaneously demonstrating how much people love reasonable comments on lists and how much they hate double posts.
Congrats, Simon!
And we’re all still here, so the Gumiverse did not explodify. Huzzah!
I feel so honored and happy! I don’t know if that’s a testament to how amazing this blog is and how integral it is to my life…or if I just need to get out more.
I don’t know how to feel…
I can teach you how to feel again Simon, but you’re going to have to trust me.

Anyone seen Brokencyde live ? I received noification they are playing a local venue next month. They certainly look pretty cool.
…actually i have
i promised a friend i’d go a while back
i hadn’t heard them before, so i decided to look them up right before i went
and as soon as i heard the sweet sounds of the “Skeet Skeet” sample on itunes i had a pretty good idea of what i was in for
they spent about an hour setting up
during which time i was praying that some unforeseen event would render them unable to play anything ever again
they came on stage,
and within one minute of their first song, they blew out their entire PA system and the rest of the show basically sounded like they were playing songs out of an iphone speaker
in short,
i learned that god answers prayers about brokencyde.

Soooooo happy for Tommy’s Shabazz comment edging into the #10 slot.
It’s called knowing your audience.
Great Week Indeed! Happy Coachella to everyone! Even if you aren’t going, the live streams are pretty damn satisfying.
Thanks, brah! I saw a golden opportunity with that first comment…
I’ve now made the Top 10 on Stereogum and the Top 5 on Videogum…do I get some sort of medal or something? I’m way too excited about this.
