Coachella ’08 did no favors for our impression of Black Kids’ live set, but Reggie and his young bloods did at least look more the part than before, miming a confidence still not possessed by the Kids’ rhythm section. The band’s relatively glossy videos help to explain that disconnected swagger: backlash and growing pains aside, the Kids are being groomed. The last clip brought a powdered wig premise to the still catchy “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend…,” and video #2 from the forthcoming album of not-MySpace-demos skips forward a few hundred years, switching between a planetarium picnic and scenes of exploding pyramids, jumping for the stars, and lots of slow-motion.

Nice cape, kid. The album, titled Partie Traumatic, is out in the UK on 7/7 via Almost Gold and 7/22 around these parts via Columbia. It’s nice to hear what Bernard Butler’s doing to the demos in a proper studio setting, but we’re most interested to hear the new stuff.

WHY are you writing about this band if all they ever seem to do is LET YOU DOWN??? They aren’t good, they need practice….so stop TRYING to make them big off of blog mentions. This is ridiculous. You all need to refocus yourselves and find bands that are just good…on their own. I’m sick of hearing “here’s a new video by that band we hated at Coachella, which was that same band that underwhelmed us at CMJ…”
THEN, this hype helps them score a record deal and we get another “flash in the pan” band…

I agree with this guy. No one even knows who this band is in heir home town. They all worked for a weekly news paper and had all the means to whore their shitty music.
Here’s a real band from Jacksonville and they’re trying to open Lallapalooza this year so vote for them. This is a band that cant seem to make a recording that capture’s what they do on stage unlike the Black Kids who find themselves not being able to play on stage, what they have recorded on their album.

The Black Kids have a very awesome thing going for them if they can just translate the fun from those first few recordings into the debut and onto the stage. I do have to admit that I like the demo version of Jane and Dance better than these newer versions, but that could just be what I’m used to.
God forbid they get posted about on this here free Internet blogthing. THE OUTRAGE!
Black Kids are great. I saw them recently open for Cut Copy and the BK had a really outstanding set. The band seemed genuinely excited to play for a NYC audience.

Trust me…I moved on, but I don’t get why Stereogum hasn’t as well. Everytime they write about this band they talk about how the band has consistently underwhelmed them, so why waste time….FIND A BAND THAT IS GOOD ENOUGH TO WRITE ABOUT.
also…they’re a band from Florida and played NYC to a crowded house due to unwarranted internet blog buzz…of course they were excited to play NYC.
God, they’re just awful. There’s really not much more to add to the discourse.
Reggie is actually a pretty nice guy. I’ve seen them live several times and they’ve gradually improved every time. They’re leagues ahead of where they were when they went to Europe for the first time.
With that being said…this video…not so great.
I don’t get it either. How is this band getting booked on major festivals, going to Europe and on Columbia Records…not to mention all of this blog buzz when all the time people just talk about how they need practice, or how they have “improved”.
Has the world gone mad?! No wonder the music industry is tanking…great approach “sing/book them, they will get better eventually”.
