San Diego quartet the Soft Pack were called the Muslims when we suggested you keep your eyes on them. They shifted the name, but their Strokes-esque Stooges-inspired post-punk rock ‘n’ roll remains the same (even when they go acoustic). They reminded me of a preppy Richard Hell and the Voidoids when I first heard them… that’s still there. Ditto a modern Modern Lovers. So what else shifted? The group’s recently done shows with Phoenix (who they’ve remixed), Franz Ferdinand, the Last Shadow Puppets, and the Breeders and are about to release their self-titled full-length debut on Kemado. Take a look at the Felipe Lima-directed video for first single “Answer To Yourself,” which finds the guys working hard for the money, etc., at Del Mar Pizza. Oscars will not be awarded for the fight sequence.

Here’s the song without peperoni:

The tracklist:

01 “C’mon”
02 “Down On Loving”
03 “Answer to Yourself”
04 “Move Along”
05 “Pull Out”
06 “More Or Less”
07 “Tides of Time”
08 “Flammable”
09 “Mexico”
10 “Parasites”

The Soft Pack is out 2/2 via Kemado. It can be pre-ordered now via Insound. They’re putting out an “Answer Yourself” 12″ in December. It’ll include the title track along with another song from the album “C’Mon” and two B-sides, “Eat Gold” and “Faith Man.”

Love love love it. Not too generic sounding and great lyrics. I’m impressed.

  3. Been following them since they opened for the Breeders last year. Simple, raw, and they did a nice little cover of The Cure’s “Grinding Halt.”

saw them opening up for both friendly fires/white lies and phoenix. not impressed. my ears almost bled both times i saw them from the sheer volume of their set. thats not a good thing. pretty generic stuff and this video only confirms that.

their guitarist looks like demetri martin, so…thats a plus?
