Two things you can count on every year: the year will end, and there will be lists that piss off everybody. Being 2009, there’s bonus piss-off potential because we get to objectively rank subjective pieces of art not only for the year but also for the decade. Fun! So we’re happy to announce that the time has come for you to participate in this historically meaningful electoral process: In partnership with our sister site Videogum.com, we’re opening voting on this year’s annual Gummy Awards. You’ve been making your Album Of The Year lists since before this year started, so that shouldn’t be too hard. (Pass through our Heavy Rotation to refresh your recollection some more.) We also want to know about your favorite video, what artists you crush on, and your pick for Best New Act and Album Of The Decade.
Of course, life is about more than just demonstrating your superior taste in music. Life is also about your demonstrating your superior taste in TV, movies, and viral videos — i.e., the stuff covered every day on Videogum. So you’ll be voting in those non-music categories too.
Voting is fun. But it can also be very lucrative. One randomly selected entrant in this year’s Gummy Awards poll is going to win this lot of cool swag:
- The Top 50 Albums Of The Decade (as determined by Gummys results) on VINYL, because CDs are for squid brains. This prize comes courtesy of our friends at Insound. Shop there!
- A 160GB Apple TV so you can beam all those Mad Men and Justin Bieber downloads to your flatscreen.
- A bottle of 2007 Lewis Vineyard Riesling AKA “Peanut Riesling” sold by Jeff Dunham. You know, the guy behind the worst thing in the entire world? Gold Medal Denver Int’l Wine Competition.

Cast your votes now at gummyawards.com. Polls close 12/2 at 6 PM EST.

Any album you vote for > Jeff Dunham.
Good luck everyone!
Are you already predicting that all the albums that will make it to the top 50 are actually available on Vinyl?
No — I realize they may not all be available on vinyl. In those cases winner gets a CD instead.
Everybody, please don’t forget to vote for Love Is The Answer by Barbra Streisand as album of the year. Thank you and lots of love. ????? http://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?a=7476
Man I really want me some of that peanut wine…..but I guess the vinyl would be ok too
I think the fact that AnCo IS as popular as they are kind of tells the whole story…Bands like them and Longstreth have different motives…
An Apple TV! OMG!
What, did an editor want to get rid of that piece junk or something?
Is it bad? I actually want one for Christmas! I recently bought the first season of Friday Night Lights on iTunes. Would be nice to watch season 2 w/ the choice of streaming on TV/laptop/iPhone.
It’s not that it is bad, it just does so little for so much. Can’t record TV, very limited number of codecs, no support for DVD or anything. It’s more of a delivery system for iTunes. If all your media is purchased from iTunes, then it is good for you. But there are many better options for media center (Boxee/XBMC) that add features like support for all types of codecs, DVR-capabilities, and even play DVDs/CDs for cheaper.
Tech nerd out. Music nerd in! How about them Japandroids? My choice for album of the year.
FINALLY, the moment all the stupid “>” commenters have been waiting for!
May I suggest at least 5 entry fields for best album next time around. This year has been very damn good. Don’t even know who I’ll be voting for yet. :[
ha I kind of froze once i saw all those blank fields, i then blacked out and woke up and it was all filled out for me. I dont really watch music videos so i put down miley cyrus party in the usa but all my other answers were sincere i promise. I’m sure radiohead is gonna sweep most of these categories anyways
, because i have no faith in anyone on stereogums taste in music i’m gonna predict they have 3 in the top ten (two for sure).
On another note, thats one sweet prize!
uh oh it’s not looking good for my album of the decade it didn’t even appear in the suggestions box
Some sort of problem with the form. It keeps telling me I didn’t fill in certain sections even though they’re clearly filled out.
E-mail me at tips @ stereogum and I’ll troubleshoot w/ you
I chose Thom Yorke as my indie guy crush because, I can’t help it, I love the guy.
Plus, he was just adorable here idk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC9-xPAvv70
Chef Raekwon put out my favorite album this year. My indie dude was J Dilla… I know he passed away three years ago, but his beats are still rampant throughout the Hip/Hop world.
Anyone vote for Major Lazer pon de floor for best video?
Yes, and I expect it to win. Oh, wait — the “Kids” video was released this year. That has the creep vote and the Joanna Newsom is God vote locked.
Ah I cast my vote but I wanted to go back to that Videogum best-of list of links. Any chance of getting that posted??
so the bottle of wine disqualifies everyone under 21? aw oh well
Added this:
If our randomly selected grand prize winner is under 21, he/she will receive non-alcoholic Jeff Dunham merch in place of the Peanut Riesling (Gold Medal, Denver Int’l Wine Competition).
I just realized I haven’t purchased a single ’09 album this year. I am terribly embarrassed.
AND THOM YORKE WILL ALWAYS BE MY INDIE ROCK CRUSH.
Is it a bad sign that my album of the year didn’t come up on the suggestions as I typed it in?
Jeff Dunham has an album out?! Holy shit!!!
My indie rock crushes
Boy > Noah Lennox
Girl > Jonny Greenwood
Gnome > Thom Yorke
just realized i totally forgot about incubus when i voted…. brandon boyd will never forgive me…
