Childish Gambino

Community star Donald Glover has been rapping as Childish Gambino for a while now, and many of us remain utterly unconvinced by his general rapping ability. Give the guy credit for good taste, though: The new track “Unnecessary” features Black Hippy fast-growler Schoolboy Q and a sinister Knight Rider-style beat. Hear a bleeped, tagged-up radio rip of it below.

It is so weird to hear Funkmaster Flex bombs all over a Childish Gambino track.

  1. His mix-tape stuff was hit and miss, but Camp was pretty good and I think he showed he can rap with his guest verse on Heems’ mix-tape.

  2. I don’t like Childish Gambino either, but if you’re going to report some general news about the guy, at least keep it secular, you know?

“…and many of us remain utterly unconvinced by his general rapping ability.” is what the comment section is for.

    • I second this. Some of us really enjoy his “general rapping ability”. Leave the snark for the comments. :)

    • It’s not snark. I’m a music critic, and I think he’s a pretty bad rapper.

      • I can’t speak for every single one, but the other “MP3s & Streams” features I’ve read recently show us the track with just a brief description, without any sort of critique of the quality of the artist. It’s like you called out Gambino just because you could, which is whack. Plus, it’s Childish Gambino: everyone knows he’s corny, it’s like entry-level hate.

  3. Childish Gambino is offensively terrible at making music. He’s a good word-sayer, I guess. But come on. I guess you’re a fan of hipster racism/sexism/stupidity.

  4. I’m not sure why people rag on his ability as a rapper unless you’ve ‘prematurely evaluated’ his music. Especially someone that listens to a lot of rap. I think he’s a pretty great rapper and actually has stuff to say.. http://youtu.be/RpohPO3ALYQ

  5. why is it weird to hear Flex tag this tune? I think it’s curious that indie blogs have scene hopped the last two years into Hip Hop. So we are even.

  6. Tom has been a self-described music critic for a while now, and many of us remain utterly unconvinced by his general blogging ability. Give the guy credit for good taste, though: at least he spared us from being subjected to a longer post of his opinions, and instead opted to take a swipe at an artist in what would ideally have simply been a description of the track.

It is so weird to see someone writing on the internet take himself so seriously.
