Scientists say the weeks between Thanksgiving and Chrismukkah are the most depressing time of year (or maybe I read that on Friendster) and it’s easy to see why. As we gear up for year end, spending awkward time with our extended families, it’s natural to take stock of the last twelve months and ask the important questions. “When will I find a job that doesn’t crush my soul?” “What’s wrong with my OKCupid profile?” “Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear?” “Why is it 60° in Brooklyn?” Last week we all got psyched for 2010. This week we end on a somber note by reflecting once again on those we’ve lost.
To be my sunshine after the rain
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday
And all the Philly steaks you could eat
A million thanks to video editor Matt Neatock for helping me with this. I’ll get you next time, Aerosmith.
UPDATE: In the weeks since this video was completed, Sam Champion, The XYZ Affair, Panther, and Magistrates called it quits as well. R.I.P. bros.

Now there’s a bittersweet symphony if I’ve ever seen one (for a handful on that list at least).
lol the ending was too good.
Hahaha. Nice work. These better not come back to life! (at least in the next year)
Thanks everyone!
Whoa whoa whoa what happened to Sister Suvi and Harlem Shakes????
Much love for Danity Kane, wherever you are. They got me through a lot of hard times in my life. Now I know why they say only the good die young.
Yo d33r, thing is they do! Remember this is the Verve’s SECOND time around dying!
I know, but how many lives does a dead cat have in it. Geez, enough already!
What’s the song that’s right at the end?
Oasis – Don’t Look Back in Anger
SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!?????????
Is this a joke? You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me. Seriously stereogum? Seriously? I kept watching til the very end thinking surely they haven’t forgotten! What kind of game are you playing at? I mean, we know y’all like to keep your indie cred certificate with you at all times, but seriously? It seems that you’re neglecting someone from this list of LOST MUSICIANS. I mean I know he’s not really gone because he lives forever in our hearts, but Jesus Fucking Christ what a piece of shit this is. Go to hell when you die Stereogum.
MICHAEL JACKSON 4EVER!!!!!
Beat it
uhhhh, hugh. its definitely a joke. none of the artists on this list is actually dead. all these bands broke up.
was the premise really that challenging for you?
I mean I know we’re all still broken up about Brooks and Dunn, but what kind of shitty Brooklyn weed are you all smoking!
Harvey Danger broke up!?
Good stuff! As
as it is
what about mj?
THESE PEOPLE AREN”T DEAD!!!!! THEY JUST BROKE UP
colin has a bit of a problem recognizing humor.
After I wipe these tears from my eyes I will douse my my sorrows in some sweet two buck chuck (and pretend it’s not business as usual for a Friday). The last time I felt so bittersweet was when the Get Up Kids broke up. Nice work guys!
Wht if Girl Talk retires next week?
Just got a press release that Sam Champion is officially broken up after tonight’s gig.
Nice timing Sam Champion!
COPELAND!
Wow, not a lot of legit casualties this year. I really don’t count The Verve or Oasis as they have done this before, will get back together and then do it again. RIP The Rakes and Harlem Shakes….
as much as it surprises me that queen + paul rodgers have broken up, it mostly makes me very happy.
harlem shakes clearly the saddest
OAAAASIS!! sniff. i’m sure they’ll be back together. it’s what british bands do. but still kinda sad. they had some classic tunes. a while ago, but whatev.
The Rakes? Really? Fuck!!! That just shook my world. :´(
Oasis is not officially gone guys. Liam might still name his new band “Oasis” ..so we all might continue to have an Oasis around for a while. A Noel-less Oasis but surely still the same crappy Manchester band we’ve all cringed for these past ten years.
Definitely maybe.
Yeah post-1999 was pretty depressing but up through Be Here Now, they were an awesome band.
I’m sad that there aren’t a lot more people in serious tears over Pela. That still upsets me. I’ve been waiting patiently for ‘Rise Ye’ Sunken Ships’ for years now. And not only will it never be released now, but the band is gone entirely.
If you have no idea who Pela is, do your self a favor and look them up. Their album ‘Anytown Graffiti” was one of the best albums of 2007.
I’m with ya dude. Their next album was gonna put ‘em on the f’n MAP but their label screwed ‘em over BIG time, forcing them to re-record “….. Sunken Ships” TWICE even though the band had 100% creative control. Yeah, right. The Fuckers.
Amen to that. Pela were awesome. The last I heard they were working on the next one in Dumbo. Very, very, very gutted that they are no more. I’m going to listen to Tenement Teeth repeatedly in their honour.
I’m still sad about Oxford Collapse. :’(
Wow, I didn’t realize the a lot of hipster garbage dissolved this year.
Good night sweet princes.
In my best cockney accent:
ohwaysis is th’ gray’est bri’ish rowk ban’ since th’ bay’uls!!
I don’t know about you guys but I sure am gonna miss Queen + Paul Rodgers. That Rodgers was at least the fifth best dude you could pick to replace Freddie whathisname. And its a shame The Cosmos Rocks wasn’t reviewed by P4K. I’m sure it woulda got at least a 8.9.
Umm…how did you forget NIN’s?
They’re just done touring … NIN will continue.
I dunno, with Trent selling all the gear on ebay they sure FEEL pretty dead.
Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear? Which band is more boring? Tough choice!
You should’ve put (Again) below The Verve. Blur should’ve been up there too with (Again) below. Didn’t Carl Barat’s post-Libs band Dirty Pretty Things break-up earlier this year?…… Yeah, I know……. WHO CARES?!
Good riddance…The Brits have such a weakness for mouthy pretty boys and tabloid drama…They were just there to fill the void of the Stone Roses anyway…
I’m sad about Mika Miko because they’re just cool guys, I met them in Seattle a little while ago, but I guess its for the best…
I guess Danity Kane finally realized how awful they were. Good for them. Best decision they’ve ever made.
What about The Darkness?
Harlem Shakes will be missed.
The Parkas, like Harlem Shakes, released a great record this year (“You Should Have Killed Us When You Had the Chance”), than called it a day. Pity; they’d been around the T.O. scene as long as Broken Social Scene and The Constantines.
What about NIN?
Wait. The Verve broke up?
Again??
saddest about Mika Miko….although I did very much enjoy Harlem Shakes
Good thing I only cared about the first band.
miiiikaaa miiikooooooo……. :’(
I didn’t know the Verve broke up again. Not that I care. Did it have to do with a lawsuit because they heavily sampled an orchestral version of Start Me Up on their comeback album?
grand ole party broke up too (but i guess all the hipsters only care about dum dum girls)
Would be sad over Oasis and The Verve if I didn’t know better…Drama queens! See ya next tour!
gah, seriously, when will I find a job that doesn’t crush my soul?
The Broken West
Oh man, I didn’t realize the Lucksmiths broke up!!!
That is truly sad…those guys put on an awesome live show.
APES & ANDROIDS…is this legit? WHEN? my whole world is falling apart.
Wtf! I actually teared up at the Oasis and Oxford Collapse part. Seriously.
Nah! Oasis will be back next year, just like the Verve.
RIP Oasis: Twelve years too late.
RIP XX will be on next years In Memoriam
Some people eat bugs!
Wait wait wait. Panther broke up? For real? They JUST put out a new record! Fuck!
