Zach Condon’s younger than some of this year’s Best New Act finalists, but he’s a veteran in blog-cycle terms. His globe-trotting releases have drawn on Balkan folk (Gulag Orkestar), French pop (The Flying Club Cup), and with this year’s fantastic The March Of The Zapotec/Holland double-EP release, Mexican dirge music and synth-pop, respectively. Zach’s said he’ll “look inward” for inspiration on his next full-length, which is both exciting and much cheaper than traveling around the world looking for it. Can’t wait.

Sara Quin is one half of Tegan & Sara, the twin-sister team-up that hit a serious stride with 2007′s The Con and followed that in grand, non-spiritual fashion with this year’s Sainthood. The Death Cab-infused LP (Chris Walla produces, Jason McGerr drums) is available in a deluxe set including ON/IN/AT, a three-book collection of writing and photos that captures the Sisters Quin during fruitful periods of touring and writing over the course of 2008 and 2009. Quite the page turner. That costs money; this guitar lesson with Sara doesn’t.

After a string of Digital Shorts that gave Stereogum an excuse to post about Saturday Night Live even on weeks where the musical guest was Nickelback or whatever, Andy Samberg finally opened it up big time in 2009, teaming with his Lonely Island writing partners Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone to bring us the laugh-tracks of Incredibad and their nonstop parade of genre spoofs and cameo all-stars: T-Pain, Julian Casablancas, even Norah Jones. Sadly the album hasn’t received any Gummys this year, but it did secure a nomination from something called the Grammys? Never heard of it. But congrats Andy!

Dean Spunt is the drummer and vocalist for Los Angeles experimental punk duo No Age. After a breakout 2008, this year saw their profiles rise by sharing stages with indie rock elders Bob Mould and Pixies, collaborating in round-robin concerts with Deerhunter and Dan Deacon on the No Deachunter tour, and releasing the four-track Losing Feeling EP on Sub Pop. A new No Age full-length is expected next year(!). Spunt also keeps busy with his label Post Present Medium, which has released music by Abe Vigoda, Gun Outfit, High Places, Wavves, and Mika Miko (RIP). All that, and the guy’s practically an authority on veggie dogs to boot. Savvy.

*gasp* Fred Armisen loves Sleater-Kinney? 1 million points for him!!!!
This is no surprise. Fred and Carrie Brownstein are BFF. http://www.thunderant.com/
Aziz Ansari has great taste in television. Also, Ted Leo’s mention of Battlestar Galactica made me smile. Good man.
Oh and I want to give Owen Pallett a hug for mentioning the Luyas. I fucking love them.

ed droste! all the fever ray videos ARE the best videos!
Zach Condons favorite album is Mitch Hedberg’s Mitch All Together? Point to Mr. Condon. Well played.
Correct me if I’m wrong — my memory is a bit hazy/lazy — but I think Ted Leo is incorrect: the opening scene to Inglourious Basterds isn’t a TGtBatU homage, it’s a homage to Once Upon a Time in the West.
But since Ted Leo is a nice guy, I’ll concede to it being a general homage to Leone, which is probably most accurate anyway.
I hadn’t read anybody else’s thoughts about the scene, but when I saw the movie I immediately thought of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (and I’m glad someone else did as evident by Ted Leo). It reminded me of the opening scene in TGtBatU when Angel Eyes goes to the guy’s house, sits down at the table eats his stew, and has a conversation with him before finding out about the money and eventually killing him.
Zach Condon loves doseone. He wants to marry him and have like ten thousand of his babies.

Man. That was like the awesomest connection ever, Zach to Doseone. Anyone that loves Doseone is a friend of mine.
However, Even knowing the connection between Doseone and Yoni Wolf, and imagining Zach hanging out with them in the past and being friends, I have a hard time with someone actually calling ‘Eskimo Snow’ the best album this year. It was just too disapointing. And I think that because I like the band and had some really high hopes for the album. So, I can only assume someone that likes the band more and had even higher hopes would only be more disapointed.
Damn none of these people like Animal Collective. Guess they don’t ‘get’ it.
Hey, just cuz he’s brown…
Andrew WK went up a notch in my estimation for voting his own album as best of the decade; notch 1.
Michael Showalter gets mad props for his Next to Normal love.
Zach Condon does too for Dock Ellis & the LSD.
Actually, I’ll just stop here but I loved a lot of these answers.
Saw Next to Normal with no expectations in its pre-Broadway gestation period in DC and was kinda blown away. And I kinda hate musicals for the most part.
Ed Droste’s love for The Dream’s Love Vs Money was right out of left-field.

You made some Good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree.
Which beach city in India has the best beach hotels? On first thought you might say Goa, but thinking more, Kerla might be the selected one.
Personally I don’t think that Mr. Handsome has received enough accolades for his humanitarian efforts. In my opinion a lot of celebrity do-gooders are totally phony and engage in so called good deeds merely for positive publicity. I have to say that I don’t think that George is one of the phonies out there in the world of celbrity do-gooders. I admire what he is doing for the Haitian people. I wish more celebrities were as real as he is when it comes to helping out those less fortunate in the world. So kudos to George and his desire to make this world a better place.
