The new Mates Of State video is set in a hipster clothing store, following a day-in-the-work-life of an employee and married bloggers Kori and Jason stuck in display cases that are slowly being filled with colorful balls. The theme: “Oh, it’s my only offer / stifled copies of myself / as someone else.” Among other themes (suburban emptiness, the bourgeois routine). When we wrote about “My Only Offer” the first time, we mentioned that despite the glockenspiel and chirpy harmonies, it wasn’t as instantly memorable as spunkiest Re-Arrange Us standout “Get Better,” but this version has more balls.

They’re lucky a guy walked by with Zach Condon’s horn when he did.

Re-arrange Us is out via Barsuk. The Mates are out on tour:

06/17 Newport, KY @ Southgate House
06/18 Pittsburgh, PA @ Mr. Small’s Theatre
06/21 Philadelphia, PA (Popped! Festival)
07/25 Pemberton, BC (Pemberton Festival)
08/01 Chicago, IL (Lollapalooza)
08/08 Liberty State Park, NJ (All Points West Festival)
09/26 Austin, TX (Austin City Limits Festival)

I bought this record pretty much on impulse. It’s one of those really happy accidents that leave you smiling from ear to ear.

This album is SO good. It seemed like most of the critics didn’t like it as much as their older stuff, but I think it might be my new favorite.

not as good as “bring it back,” but a really solid, underrated album. and whoever is right, “now” is the spunkiest song.
