The Beach Boys - That's Why God Made The Radio

After decades of acrimony, the Beach Boys are back together again with resident sonic genius Brian Wilson, and their new album That’s Why God Made The Radio is about to hit shelves. We’ve already heard the triumphant title track. And now here’s the second song we’ve heard from the LP: A mellow orchestral track called “From There To Back Again.” It’s not as exciting as its predecessor, but it does, once again, offer a showcase for the group’s ridiculously powerful harmonies. Hear it at Rolling Stone.

That’s Why God Made The Radio is out 6/5 on Capitol.

  1. lately you guys have been pretty feckless with your praise for these frail and now-tuneless legends, almost to the point of ball-sucking, whereas rolling stone has been pretty dismissive of this “comeback” record, to the point of giving their former heroes a 3-star review on it

i think i need a minute to absorb the irony a bit there

    • “Brian Wilson’s approach to songwriting and arranging has only become richer with time, and the Beach Boys’ voices are as gorgeous and youthful as ever.” super dismissive. that is a direct quote from RS.com the only irony lies in your idiocy.

      • “That’s Why God Made the Radio is, to some degree, a sugary, brand-claiming nostalgiafest”

“The album is an uneven but deeply touching work by a clearly flawed Great Band”

again, do i need to say it again, 3 out of 5 stars – not exactly the award they’re used to giving the legendary subjects of rs’s heyday

        • Your own source is kinda taking you down man. They don’t sound that dismissive, 3/5 is probably a fair rating if the album follows the trend of the first single, only till the last couple does this serious stuff come through. And anyway, a 3/5 puts in on par with RS’s reviews of a lot of 60s beach boy albums. It’s also on the higher end of the 70s reviews, and the higher than any album reviews since then. So 3/5 sounds just right.

          • i think you kinda missed my point, “man” – this site has said nothing but glowing things about the first single and subsequent album for this group, yet rs took em down to chinatown – usually the hypercriticism of this site makes it go the other way around

          • uh no, we got what you were saying. We were pointing out that it’s wrong because RS didn’t dismiss anything. I listed all their old reviews because it’s similar to what they gave a lot of their albums.

          • yeah i know how it is hopelessly scrounging to find things to argue about

  2. This band kinda sounds like Animal Collective

  3. The new Album comes out in a month and i think it will do so much better than their last effort, Summer in Paradise. They are on tour at the moment in the USA and Beach Boys tickets are cheap .. They sound really really good for a band where all the members are around 70 years old.
