Pop experimentalists Micachu & The Shapes will put out a new record this summer — their first since 2009′s Jewellery — and today the UK-based group revealed the first single from the forthcoming Never. It’s called “OK,” and it’s a buzzing, hissing exercise in the group’s deconstructive approach. Download below.
Never is out 7/23 on Rough Trade. The group will be playing Brooklyn’s Glasslands on 6/4 (tickets here) and also on 7/28 for MoMA’s Warm Up series.

This song is “OK”.
I don’t care all that much if the bands I listen to sound like they are doing something stylistically that no one has done before. It’s almost impossible to do, so good, original melodies are the priority. However, I think Micachu and the Shapes sound like no one else and are really onto something. Something about their attitude toward sound reminds me of Nikki Colk’s old band KaitO; they just fearlessly use what are independently ugly and abrasive noises to craft the most unlikely pop tunes.
Great call on the KaitO connection. They performed this song and a bunch of new material recently in their Boiler Room show. Good preview of what to expect from the record. http://boilerroom.tv/micachu-the-shapes-live-in-the-boiler-room/
Jewellery blew my high school self away.
It definitely made me look at the possibilities of music in a completely different way.
If this song is any indication, Micachu will continue shattering my musical perceptions in the best way possible.
