NME‘s newest decade-spanning list, the 100 Best Tracks Of The “Oughties,” is about as Brit-heavy as you’d expect; well, at least until the top ten. 1. how is “Reckoner” better than “Idioteque” or “Everything in It’s Right Place?”

    • A sly declaration of new classic status slipped in with some old, safe ones. Very PUSSY.

      • I love both of those songs, but I honestly think “Reckoner” is an overlooked contender for best Radiohead song. I know that a lot of Radiohead fans think “In Rainbows” was a step down from the genius of their more experimental work, but for me, its just mid-blowing what Radiohead can do when they play with pop idioms, and that’s why I am deranged enough to say “In Rainbows” is better than “Kid A.”

Also: Thom Yorke has been in denial about his own marketability since the mid-90s, but his voice is PRETTY whether he likes it or not, and “Reckoner” is surely the closest he’ll ever come to singing R&B.

          • “I will see you in the next life” is maybe my favorite moment in music. It’s all a lead up to that. An album closing (besides the end-end of song 10 on Kid A) moment that is a wisp of pure bliss. It doesn’t get much better than that. There’s a definite reason such a song doesn’t make it on a list like this, but boy, it’s still a great one. I agree with Mr. Chan.

        • I agree with you Matt but. Idioteque is still better.

        • I *love* ‘In Rainbows,’ and Radiohead’s my favorite band, so, yeah. Personally, I’d probably go with “15 Steps” or “Arpeggi” as my favorite track from that album, but the whole thing’s pretty fantastic, top-to-bottom. In retrospect, you’re right about it being less experimental but no less amazing.

        • I agree with Reckoner being one of Radiohead’s best songs, but I’d say as far as “the closest he’ll ever come to singing R&B”, I’m gonna give that one to House of Cards.

    • Reckoner is best since 2000, but yeah, Idioteque, There, There, I Might Be Wrong, Motion Picture Soundtrack, Knives Out, You and Whose Army, Nude, National Anthem, Weird Fishes, are all better than EIIRP. Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that i’ve heard it at EVERY rh show i’ve seen since 2000.

Also, does True Love Waits count? Played before 2000, but released after on the IMBW live disc.

    • I don’t really get ranking things in list form but if there was any song that was deserving of the title of best song of the 00′s it would probably be Hey Ya.

(And that M.I.A. song is also really great.)

      • Hey Ya would have been my vote.

      • There are very few objectively true statements in pop music criticism, but “‘Hey Ya’ was the best song released between 2000-2009″ is one of them.

        • This is science fact.

        • I don’t think “Hey Ya” was even the best Outkast song on “The Love Below” … let alone of the album /their 00′s career / that decade. “B.O.B.”, “Ms. Jackson,” “Roses” are all better choices, even if we had to stick with singles.

As someone who has performed “Hey Ya” at more than one karaoke night I can’t deny that its a great tune, but as someone who has loved Outkast for a long time its sort of sad that its the song they’ll be remembered for, since its not at all indicative of how genius they were. What Dre, Tupac did for West Coast rap during the 90s, what Biggie and Wu-Tang did for the East … thats what Outkast did for the South.

          /superfan

    • MORE like because OF EXAGGERATION without representation, AM I RIGHT?

BUT seriously NME is one OF THE SHITTIEST magazines I’VE EVER read.

  3. Hmm same number one as VH1 . I like Crazy In Love, but it never popped to me as one of the very top songs of the decade, even in concerns to popular songs. Pretty interesting list I might actually like it better than the 90′s list even though I feel like the 90′s had overall better music.

  4. Hmm same number one as VH1 . I like Crazy In Love, but it never popped to me as one of the very top songs of the decade, even in concerns to popular songs. Pretty interesting list I might actually like it better than the 90′s list even though I feel like the 90′s had overall better music.

    • Might of spoken too soon, but there are some good memories on the list still. I don’t really understand their Eminem choices, especially Without Me being so high and including Milkshake is a little silly.

  5. Early 00′s hip hop really got the shaft here

  6. NME’s top 100 britpop/rock songs of the 2000s.

  7. No Ladytron – Destroy Everything You Touch? Uh-uh. That’s bad.

  8. Robyn – “Dancing on My Own”

  9. Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

  10. command+f
    “fleet foxes”
not found – that doesn’t seem right

  11. Wolf Parade — “I’ll Believe In Anything”

Not surprised it’s not on this list but it deserves to be in this thread.

  12. And Yeah Yeah Yeah’s best track in that time frame is ‘Bang’? Well okay then.

  13. You know, I was beginning to miss seeing NME in the Most Commented section…

  14. Justice – “D.A.N.C.E.”

  15. Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

  16. needs more LCD Soundsystem, All My Friends to be exact

  17. “And I Was a Boy From School” is a head above everything else Hot Chip has ever made (and I like Hot Chip). Ridiculous another Hot Chip song is included over that one.

  18. Sugababes – Freak Like Me is a million times better than Round Round.

    • Because it had that Gary Numan – “Cars” sample…

      • Or what some people call “Are Friends Electric?”- but seriously, the original Richard X mashup with the Adina Howard vocals is the best classic mash of all time.

I would not have minded a Goldfrapp tune, or for that matter “Since K Got Over Me” by the Clientele. I appreciate that they appreciate “The Rat”. Some personal faves from that era that I wouldn’t expect, but are worth a mention “Portions For Foxes”/”It’s a Hit” Rilo Kiley, about 20 New Porngraphers songs, Okkervil River, a few other In Rainbows songs, Band of Horses “The Funeral”

  19. Amerie – “1 Thing” ABSOLUTELY

  20. Basement Jaxx – “Romeo”

  21. “Fuck Forever” is a classic.

  22. I’m not the biggest Modest Mouse fan, but where the hell is “Float On” ?

  23. Thought a British publication would be all over something like Burial’s “Archangel”.

    • They should be. Our magazines are shite.

      • The Quietus and The Stool Pigeon are pretty good! So are many of the free ones in the back of (independent) record shops. I recently picked up a new one called The Beat Juice which was pretty cool.

    • Definitely. The more time goes by, the more Burial’s first two look like absolute masterpieces, and the best of the decade. I remember how Radiohead seemed like the most important decade as time wore on. Now, Burial’s taken that mantle. Shame on NME, their list looks old-fashioned.

  24. Justin Timberlake – “My Love”, Kelly Clarkson – “Since You Been Gone”, Daft Punk – “Digital Love”, R. Kelly “Ignition (remix)”, Bombs Over Baghdad???!!!!

trying to be more economical and not clog up so much space

  25. Aaliyah – Try Again.

  26. If ‘The Rat’ isn’t at No.1 then it’s a stupid list. Simple.

  27. Seriously? Talk about lowering your standards. There’s some really lousy pics on that list.

  28. First of all, Crazy In Love as the best song of the decade is a complete misnomer. Second of all, not including the Gorillaz on this list renders it completely useless and ignorant.

  29. grizzly bear?!? phoenix?!?!?

  30. Two Weeks? The National-songs? Gorillaz? Turn on the bright lights-stuff? Hit The City?

  31. Listen, I know Wilco isn’t necessarily a single-centric band, but their absence on this list is a gross miscalculation.

  32. I am happy to see that Doves Cedar Room was shown some love. I would have placed Radiohead in the top ten for sure. As for Kasabian I don’t know how it even made it on here.

  33. As long as The Real Slim Shady made it, all is right.

  34. what is this list? random NME editor’s ipod put on shuffle for 100 spots?

  35. Panda Bear – Bros

  36. Not a bad list… very predictable for NME.

Why does everyone insist upon criticizing it and/or recommending songs that should be on it? Everyone’s taste is different. The only reason I care about these lists is to find the handful of songs I might not have heard so I can improve my musical horizons…

  37. I never read these lists, but to stay informed, I just scroll through the comments to see the glaring omissions.

Much more entertaining than trying to figure it out on my own. Thanks, friends!

  38. Blur’s Out of Time really is a great track. Think Tank is truly an underrated classic.

  39. Listing songs is pointless when encompassing a whole decade. But this list is especially bad at even picking individual artists best songs from the decade… Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and the White Stripes for example.

  40. this list is pure crap. Bang over Maps for YYY’s? wow..

  41. 82 Kings Of Leon – “Sex On Fire”

    Rest of list ignored.

    • Seriously. I love the pre-whatever album that’s from Kings of Leon, and seeing as how the Brits have been all up on KOL’s jock since their inception, you’d think they pick one of their great early tracks. ANY song from any album or EP prior to that “breaking lightbulb” album is better than that [crap].

  42. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros? Hit me with some Clash members!

Or yeah, just make the whole list KoL… you know you had to restrain yourself not to, NME.

  43. I’d never expect NME to include it, but for purely for me, Beach House – Gila.

  44. Postal Service: Such great heights. or something by them.

  45. should be retitled ” the 100 most important songs to 2000-2010 british culture per the viewpoint/agenda of NME.”

i mean, come on, “best?” how the hell do you possibly do that? being as it is that my iTunes is largely made up of albums from 2000 onward, i could go in there and easily select at least 500 songs for you, right now, that in my opinion are extraordinarily good and arguably belong on a list like this. and really random shit, too; there’s tons of great songs out there that were never singles, or even popular for that matter. i’m sure all of you could do the same.

    • “should be retitled ‘the 100 most important songs to 2000-2010 british culture per the viewpoint/agenda of NME.’” – i think that was implied

  46. Thank god Sufjan Stevens made it.

  47. Kanye’s best song is Gold Digger? What?

Am I doing it right guys?

  48. Which version of this list are they on at this point — v. 8.2 or something?

  49. Top 5 Stereogum comments complaining about lists:

    5. I got to [insert number] and had to stop, couldn’t stop laughing!

    4. [Generic smart alec comment parodying people who go "Such a person's listed above such a person? Rabble rabble rabble!"]

    3. Lists are irrelevent.

    2. Where the hell are 311? Man, they got screwed out of this one.

    1. Whhere the hell is Bon Iver? Man, he got screwed out of this one.

  50. Also how is this list “Brit heavy”? Every time I see two consecutive places taken up by Brits the next three places at least get taken up by non-Brits!

    • Okay, let me explain it. Any list titled “Top 100″ anything (besides maybe white rappers) that has, not only multiple M & M nods, but also The Streets (and a particularly limp-wristed track by ‘em) is technically ‘Brit heavy’.

  51. This looks like one of the most boring outcomes of shuffling my Spotify

  52. Tempted to complain about “Milkshake” being ranked higher than , but I love the idea of NME’s reviews being written with that song blaring in the background…

  53. No Ladytron – Destroy Everything You Touch, Metric – Dead Disco, Röyksopp – Poor Leno, Goldfrapp – Strict Machine, M83 – We Own the Sky, Underworld – Crocodile, New Order – Crystal, LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends, Primal Scream – Kill All Hippies, Daft Punk – Aerodynamic, Faithless – We Come 1, Ladyhawke – My Delerium, Robyn – With Every Heartbeat, Groove Armada – Superstylin’ on that NME list.

    Shame on them!

  54. Muse, Kasabian, and Kings of Leon? I didn’t realize NME writers were all 14 years old..

  55. If a song drops in the noughts but no radio stations are around to play it, did it really exist?

    • 6/26 is my bday! You are a shit writer. The Patriots is laughable at best. Go fuck yourself!

      • Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

        • If I was referring to the team I would’ve said the Patriots ARE laughable… I was talking about the piece of poo blog attached to your twitter you illiterate hack.

          • Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

        • You ever seen combat? Did you even serve? I did and have. I love America…sometimes. I love music all the time. And you sir are very bad at what you do.

        • “What you even talkin? Patriots fuckin the Cowboys are fuckin.”

Hey, that’s pretty much a coherent thought!

    • Whenever you write something, I just take the ALL CAPS words and see if they form some sort of secret code sentence or two. It’s a fun game! So, let’s see what we get this time:

“Reading, looking at fuckin. What is wrong that you, apex of short-form, this decade, kid? Maybe y’all, it, or for those to have their utterly and bone, please.”

      Almost make sense!

  57. The list should be alphabetical so that everyone stops complaining about which song is higher than which because Jesus Fucking Christ I want to tear my dick off reading this.

  58. Electric Feel > Time to Pretend

    • think back to the time you FIRST heard Time to Pretend…reconsidering that statement yet? what about the first time you heard Kids? is that blasphemy?

  59. New Slang?

  60. I love music lists! The scientific method at its finest.

  61. Hey Ya! should be number one. Mostly because it is the perfect synthesis of all pop music up to that point in time.

  62. 100. derp
    99. derp
    98. derp
    .
    .
    .
    .
    47. (!)
Holy shit, NME! Way to go putting Toxic in there. That song is one of my all time favorites.

  63. Anyone else find NME’s undying love for Crystal Castles a little more than strange? I mean I like Crystal Castles a lot but they don’t seem like an NME group. They’re not even British!

  64. So when do they release the real #1?

  65. CSS’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above charted while there are zero Death From Above 1979 songs?

  66. I know this is a totally random gripe regarding a list but if any Doves song is going to be on this list at all, “There Goes the Fear” should be it

  67. Le Tigre ~ “Deceptacon”

  68. Young Hearts Spark Fire. Thank you for your time

  69. How are there one hundred and fifty nine eight-fourths comments in this and not a single one mentioning the greatest song ever written:

    “Titus Andronicus” by Titus Andronicus

Shame on you. Shame on every last one of you.

  70. Art Brut “Formed A Band”
    Gorillaz ” Clint Eastwood”
Spoon “The Way We Get By”
Bright Eyes “Lover I Don’t Have To Love”
    Autolux “Turnstile Blues”
I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness “According to plan”
    Sparrow House “When I’m Gone”
Death From Above 1979 “Romantic Rights”

  71. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM – ALL MY FRIENDS!?!?!?! Easily top 3!

  72. Typical NME. Maximo Park over LCD Soundsystem.

  73. Am I the first to realize that Do You Realize should be way higher than #99?

  74. I’m not entirely sure about that. You included the wimpy snoozearama Postal Service, and you chose an Idlewild song from an album other than 100 Broken Windows and a Trail of Dead song from an album other than Source Tags & Codes. Also, the Magnolia Electric Co. are basically a boring Creedence tribute band (which is too bad because Creedence was anything but boring), a fact which few people seem to have realized. If it seems like I’m being hard on you, it’s only because you had already seen an example of what not to do.

  75. Okay, seven nation army needs to be higher. Personally, i think it should be number one. It redefined rock and roll for the rest of the 2000s. Hell, every pep band in high school and college has played that song at sporting events. I was only about ten when that song came out, but I knew the first time I heard it it was going to be one of the most legendary rock songs ever written. Even the most diehard white stripes fans don’t seem to get tired of it. Anyways, most of the list needs to be rethought out. But hey, a list is made for people to complain.

  76. In regards to none of this, how has Stereogum managed to avoid ANY stories about alt-J? Write something about alt-J and forget about NME. Everyone knows NME is the US Weekly of the UK.

  77. The 30s-10s were actually fairly agreeable, though the rest of the list read as “The best average tracks of the 00s”

  78. Any song from the first three Hold Steady albums (and most of the fourth) is better than 99% of this list.

  79. Nice to see NME is on a roll with shitty lists

  80. NME get it wrong again…

  81. If these lists do anything right it is bring out the commenters to Stereogum.

Also I love seeing AnAmPat in here…. its nice to see Videogum bleed over back into Stereogum every so often.

  82. lol at Klaxons at number 7….oh NME, you cheeky monkey! thought we wouldn’t notice!!

  83. Didn’t u forget Deerhunter?

  84. No
    St Vincent?

These New Puritans?? thought they’d be a shoe in.
    Broadcast?
    Cat Power?
    blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  85. Blur – Out Of Time at 8?? Really?

  86. The problem with Hey-Ya, which is an admittedly great track, is that it will forever overshadow the OTHER 50 (at least) great Outkast tracks that also deserve attention.

  87. Ya know… that list is just kind of weird. Seems like a lot of the artists chosen probably released better songs during those years. *shrug*

  88. “Don’t Leave the Light On, Baby” B&S
    “Funeral” Band of Horses
    “Three Seed” Silversun
    “Carrion” British Sea Power
“Margerine Rock” Stereolab (The North Remembers, Mary!)

  89. Cass McCombs-Aids in Africa

    The Outdoorsmen-Tell Yr Folks

  90. I mean the Famines-Free Love is a Sales Technique

    The Walkmen-In the New Year
    Gucci Mane-Lemonade
    Vitalic-The Past
    Morrissey-You Have Killed Me
    Cold Cave-Love Comes Close
    Loretta Lynn-The Van Lear Rose

  91. Not to hate on Beyonce, because I really do like most of her stuff, but “Crazy in Love” is not nearly as awesome as mainstream music types would have you believe.

  92. Alright I agree that lots of great songs are missing, but that being said can someone make a YouTube playlist of all them for me please? First to do so gets some nostalgia with a side of hazy memories.

  93. As usual Stereogum lists are not to be taken seriously.

  94. The fact that this list came out two and a half years late absolves it of any and all credibility

  95. I’m sure this would probably cause the apocalypse, but considering how Stereogum has been alive and kicking for most of the 00s, would you (the mythical writers at SG) consider doing a counterlist?

You can recruit Scott, his DMB post obviously shows that he is completely immune to slander from the comments section

  96. 702 – Where My Girls

  97. Hilarious… if you choose Beyonce for #1, why don’t you include Shakira or Bieber in your little list?, the three of them are the same shit. Is it because she is Jay Z’s wife? I really don’t get you NME.

    • Crazy in love is a great song, uptempo not mean it is bad. Obviously you do not know to recognize a good song. Rolling Stones put crazy in love nr 3. haha
matter that she is Jay Z’s wife??? dumb!!
the only shit that you … and Bieber of course.
