how is “Reckoner” better than “Idioteque” or “Everything in It’s Right Place?”
A sly declaration of new classic status slipped in with some old, safe ones. Very PUSSY.
I love both of those songs, but I honestly think “Reckoner” is an overlooked contender for best Radiohead song. I know that a lot of Radiohead fans think “In Rainbows” was a step down from the genius of their more experimental work, but for me, its just mid-blowing what Radiohead can do when they play with pop idioms, and that’s why I am deranged enough to say “In Rainbows” is better than “Kid A.”
Also: Thom Yorke has been in denial about his own marketability since the mid-90s, but his voice is PRETTY whether he likes it or not, and “Reckoner” is surely the closest he’ll ever come to singing R&B.
“I will see you in the next life” is maybe my favorite moment in music. It’s all a lead up to that. An album closing (besides the end-end of song 10 on Kid A) moment that is a wisp of pure bliss. It doesn’t get much better than that. There’s a definite reason such a song doesn’t make it on a list like this, but boy, it’s still a great one. I agree with Mr. Chan.

I *love* ‘In Rainbows,’ and Radiohead’s my favorite band, so, yeah. Personally, I’d probably go with “15 Steps” or “Arpeggi” as my favorite track from that album, but the whole thing’s pretty fantastic, top-to-bottom. In retrospect, you’re right about it being less experimental but no less amazing.
I agree with Reckoner being one of Radiohead’s best songs, but I’d say as far as “the closest he’ll ever come to singing R&B”, I’m gonna give that one to House of Cards.
Reckoner is best since 2000, but yeah, Idioteque, There, There, I Might Be Wrong, Motion Picture Soundtrack, Knives Out, You and Whose Army, Nude, National Anthem, Weird Fishes, are all better than EIIRP. Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that i’ve heard it at EVERY rh show i’ve seen since 2000.

I don’t think “Hey Ya” was even the best Outkast song on “The Love Below” … let alone of the album /their 00′s career / that decade. “B.O.B.”, “Ms. Jackson,” “Roses” are all better choices, even if we had to stick with singles.
As someone who has performed “Hey Ya” at more than one karaoke night I can’t deny that its a great tune, but as someone who has loved Outkast for a long time its sort of sad that its the song they’ll be remembered for, since its not at all indicative of how genius they were. What Dre, Tupac did for West Coast rap during the 90s, what Biggie and Wu-Tang did for the East … thats what Outkast did for the South.

I’m not entirely sure about that. You included the wimpy snoozearama Postal Service, and you chose an Idlewild song from an album other than 100 Broken Windows and a Trail of Dead song from an album other than Source Tags & Codes. Also, the Magnolia Electric Co. are basically a boring Creedence tribute band (which is too bad because Creedence was anything but boring), a fact which few people seem to have realized. If it seems like I’m being hard on you, it’s only because you had already seen an example of what not to do.
Okay, seven nation army needs to be higher. Personally, i think it should be number one. It redefined rock and roll for the rest of the 2000s. Hell, every pep band in high school and college has played that song at sporting events. I was only about ten when that song came out, but I knew the first time I heard it it was going to be one of the most legendary rock songs ever written. Even the most diehard white stripes fans don’t seem to get tired of it. Anyways, most of the list needs to be rethought out. But hey, a list is made for people to complain.
In regards to none of this, how has Stereogum managed to avoid ANY stories about alt-J? Write something about alt-J and forget about NME. Everyone knows NME is the US Weekly of the UK.
The 30s-10s were actually fairly agreeable, though the rest of the list read as “The best average tracks of the 00s”
Any song from the first three Hold Steady albums (and most of the fourth) is better than 99% of this list.
