I read this New York Times piece about how we’re frantically trying to find a pithy, reductive nickname for this decade that’s closing. Some are proposing “The Noughties,” others “The Naughties,” so I’m gonna coin a phrase for this time of looking back: Noughtstalgia. Or Naughtstalgia, whatever. Music mags and sites have been framing our noughtstalgic excursions via songs and albums for the past few months (see: Uncut, P4K’s albums and songs, Paste, NME, EW); yesterday, you guys weighed in. Now it’s Rolling Stone‘s turn. And as much as a list like this is a way to assess the past 10 years’ art, in this case it’s also a time to look back at the assessing institution.
RS‘s diminishing sway on the listening habits of people like us parallels MTV’s, that’s not really controversial; most that frequent sites like ours look to the internet/blogs/sites-that-rank-albums-on-10-point-scales mindmeld for leads. So what’s Rolling Stone‘s place in all of this? Take this 200-point list as the formalized answer: to be something to everyone. And in a time of increasing niche-ification, that could soon translate as “to be nothing to anyone.”
Not to say reaching outside the internet’s navel-gazing is without value! In theory, it’s refreshing to have an alternative to the hipster hegemony of most lists. But in reality? Rolling Stone‘s top 15 albums tends toward commercial appeal and Dylan over artistic risk. I watched a Charlie Rose interview with Jann Wenner on the eve of the R&R HOF anniversary show in which the RS honcho spoke of his love for those acts that fuse the musical with the political, the artists “making a statement.” Not that Wenner got his hands dirty crafting this song rundown — it’d be heavier on the trinity-of-holy-Bs (Bono, Bruce, Bob) if so, and the official methodology included a poll of artists and “industry insiders” — but his spirit is there. Like, Randy Newman’s op-ed “A Few Words In Defense Of Our Country” coming in just seven slots below Pitchfork’s #1 song of the decade. Just like your list, right?
There’s a lot to pore over here, and it’s not without its catch-all merits — put it this way, to participate in a comprehensive conversation on “pop music,” whatever that is, you should probably know all of these artists. So just a few more notes before you cruise through:
- There’s a six-way tie for artists with the most songs in the Top 100: Beyoncé, U2, Jay-Z, OutKast, Radiohead, and LCD Soundsystem all with three a piece. Nicely eclectic/base-covering.
- RS and EW completely disagree on which of Cat Power’s albums is worthy of notice.
- Kanye West’s decade is to Rolling Stone‘s what Animal Collective’s was to yours: his entire four-album discography makes the list (Sung Tongs, Strawberry Jam, Merriweather, and Feels all made yours). In fairness, Ye’s actually tied with Radiohead for artist with most albums making the cut. And speaking of Animal Collective: shut out. Maybe not trying to be everything to everyone after all.
- And the #1 thing the Gummys, P4K, and RS can agree on: Kid A.
Have at it.

Head to Rolling Stone for a list of the lists that this issue promises, and a bunch of online exclusives. I’m actually going to buy this one, if only for Rob Sheffield’s piece — that dude tends to know.

No Moon and Antarctica to be found anywhere. Are you kidding me? It is in the top 5 and it’s my favorite of the decade along with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Two Jay-Z albums in the top 20, but no Modest Mouse. Absolutely stupid.
why does every single list include Radiohead?!?! It kinda pisses me off.
and I find it strange that Bloc Party isn’t on there…Silent Alarm is fantastic. no Deerhunter either.
Umm, maybe because they are an artist many publications can agree are pushing the envelope and stuff. Just a hunch.
no love for “The Sea and the Cake”
Dylon (chappelle show) list of the 5 greatest Music of the decade
1. Dylon
2. Dylon
3. Dylon
4. Dylon
5. Dylon
What about PORTISHEAD’S “THIRD”? It’s album of the decade.
And muse???

Matt Bellamy is that you. RS don’t like your band, honey:(
Most glaringly obvious oversight = A Ghost Is Born.
Very wrong. Coldplay should be in the top five, American Idiot should also.
Two very important, grammy winning new artists are missing which discredits this to me.
Songs About Jane -Maroon 5, sold more albums than most of these and had more hits.
Hybrid Theory -Linkin Park…. need I even explain? Where is Linkin Park?
Fallen -Evanescence Best song of 2003, and multi hit, multi platininum.
Demon days deserves more credit. Rap gets too much credit. Old artists who’s new albums weren’t even popular get too much credit. All abunch of BS. on this list.
Rankings should be based on sales and popularity and innovation in creating sounds that defined the decade.
Death Cab for Cutie, but not the above mentioned artists? Get real.
coldplay is awesome but i stopped reading your comment after american idiot. Do you know how many times i had to listen Boulevard Of Broken Dreams , i swear i’d stick my hand in a meat grinder next time i hear that song.
wait wait wait…….”Rankings should be based on sales and popularity and innovation in creating sounds that defined the decade. “FAIL Comment, You said Rap gets to much credit but what was the music of the decade….RAP. You need to check the website your on and understand that this is ALL MUSIC CONSIDERED and not everything just based on radio play.
I dun mind american Idiot on the top ten list actually. u can choose not to listen to Boulevard of Broken Dream, there are other awesome songs like jesus of surburbia.
Haha at the not including Animal Collective. That’s awesome.
Shefield sucks though, dude’s a goon.
On a whole the lists are of course messed up, but what do you expect. It is true that you’re never going to agree with anything all the way, and Rolling Stone is hardly a bastion of music-taste credibility these days. Getting a 3.5 there is like taking a piss in the morning.
Im just waiting for a list where TV on the Radio is in the top ten….i get disappointed every time: “this is it” better than “dear science”? why? someone just explain to me why it is better and i will be satisfied >>> Marshall Mathers LP better than Return to cookie mountain? Get outta here.
Blueprint wasn’t even the best rap album of the 00s…top ten? How do people decide what albums are the best? This is why list like this are completely defunct in some capacity–its all opinion in the end
One of the most underrated bands of all time
” The Frames”
ooo sorry man, didn’t mean to reply with that, that comment was meant for something else
but agreed, TV on the Radio first LP should be on the top 10, i still listen to it
The lack of the song Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros is really frustrating…and as previously mentioned, the absence of Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois in the top 10 or 20. That right there should be considered a piece of true American art. At least the top three albums are acceptable.
FORT MINOR DESERVES AT LEAST ONE SONG ON THE LIST. JUST ONE SONG. REALLY ROLLING STONE? WTF.
um, where the hell is the Mars Volta????
I think Blink-182 should’ve had a few songs and green day should’ve been a little higher and I think The Arcade Fire’s Funeral album and Rebellion song should’ve been also a little higher.
and what’s with some of that crap rap and hip-hop music. it’s shit
this is too american taste,
come on lil wayne best of 00′s.
Come on please,!
the truth is, that about time that magazine like rolling stones open their eyes, and see in a world view not an amercan way, because one of the most amazing things that happens during the 00′s is a thing called globalization.
THERE’S NO CHRIS BROWN ON THIS LIST….THAT’S HELLA RUDE!
wow, why is kelis’s milkshake ranked so high? WHERE is Usher? He absolutely dominated 2004. Confessions was one of the best selling albums this decade. where is gold digger by Kanye West? What about the Black EYed Peas, MAroon 5? Gnarls Barkley Crazy best song of thid entire decade?
i would have liked to see diamonds are forever kanye/jayZ or stronger by Kanye West. but the list was okay. some questionable choices, but its all opinionated anyway
this list sucks it doesnt have foo fighters in it and there no nickleback
Im going to speak on hip hop side because its all mucked up the blueprint is a great album but marshall mathers lp is best album ive ever heard so that should be ahead and you have got lil wayne ahead of 50 cent are you kidding me. get rich or die trying is one of the best hip hop albums ever and wayne is wack. and you have 808′s and heartbreaks that album is the biggest let down ive ever seen, horrible auto tune garbage. but the college dropout is great album. good to see outkast here great albums. but seriously get rich or die trying has to be top 10 and marshall mathers lp best album this decade from hip hop.
also from hip hop your missing NASSSS the guy who KILLED JAY Z with ETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i’m really glad to see all the tv on the radio selections……but what about dinosaur jr….Beyond and Farm are both incredible and i think are worthy of being at least in the top 80
Shocking that Snow Patrol didnt make either the Album Chart or the song chart – Did anyone from Rolling Stone actually listen to the Final Straw album??? Also Chasing Cars not featuring in the Songs is a Joke!!! – 134 weeks in the UK Charts – more than any record in History!!!!!
Em Im sorry but from one Irish person to another, Snow Patrol are seriously crap…such basic music – chasing cars? wtf
One word:
Tool
WHAT ABOUT WOLFMOTHER EHH???
THEY’RE THE BEST BAND OF 00′s
The album by Sigur Ros was released in 1999… therefore it can’t be one of the best of the 00′s. Glad Rolling Stone did their homework.
Were’s Tom Waits?
http://www.linkslondonsale.com/
Kid A sucks. Er, I mean, I personally find that album displeasing. Ah, who am I kidding? It seriously is feculent, overrated, hussied up, poor excuse for music. See http://tippingthelion.wordpress.com/2010/03/06/radiohead-kid-a/
I dont get why people who don’t like KID A consider it a catastrophe, by Radioheads standards. Everyone expected an “OK Computer 2″ which, imo ,is cringe worthy becuase it is one the greatest albums ever and no band has ever achieved a follow up after they release a top 10 of all time! FACT
People are confused with what Radiohead did…they left pablo, bends and ok computer behind and tried something new!
Look at all negative reviews on the album – they are negative because critics refer to ok computer and not the fact that Radiohead changed direction…By the albums standards it is an achievement to see a band so capable of making music in two different genres, or is it two different genres? Maybe its what Rock n Roll is – something new – hence Rolling Stone awarding it number 1
Crazy is genious, my opinion is theres songs that are greater
I like seeing that most people realise that this list is not for them, and I agree, I am surprised to see that the Black Eyed Peas didn’t rate a mention, again not my fav, but I can name a bunch of very popular singles and I really think they dominated a fair chunk of the early decade… Just a thought is all…
I like that they chose Elephant over White Blood Cells, too. FINALLY someone made the correct call on that one.

Seriously the crappiest list I have ever seen. Some artists are good but most kinda suck.
no one’s ever really going to agree on an international list that ranges between eight or so years?! but at least they were a bit diverse in choice of genres, and included red hot chili peppers
ehh remember 2007 APOLGIZE EVERY FUCKING WHERE?!?!?!?! got to be top 100
Other than the fact that Everything in its Right Place is far from Radiohead’s best song from the decade, and that there should be more than just three Radiohead songs in the top 50 (there are more than that in my top 20) I think its a pretty good list.
My top 10:
1.Wake Up- Arcade Fire
2.Seven Nation Army- White Stripes
3.Reckoner- Radiohead
4.Crazy- Gnarls Barkley
5.Time to Pretend- MGMT
6.Is This It- The Strokes
7.Idioteque- Radiohead
8.Paper Planes- MIA
9.Clint Eastwood- Gorillaz
10.Hurt- Johnny Cash
1.Elephant
2.Kid A
3.Is This It
4.Funeral
5.White Blood Cells
Well I was a little confused when I didn’t find Tom Petty in the Immortals issue years ago…one of those moments when you catch yourself going over and over and back over again looking for something you know has got to be there. I found myself in the same situation looking for even the slightest mention of the Chili Peppers….I mean…come guys…are you serious???? I mean are you really serious…no Chili Peppers anywhere to be found????
Get real and please send a large amount of whatever it is you are smoking…
you guys shouldnt forget that america isnt even half of the world, and in places like germany, nobody ever even heard of grizzly bear or whatever you guys talk about (animal collective? wtf is that?) – and yeah, 50 cent, eminem and kanye were the only ones that did hiphop in the naughties. at least hiphop thats sold all over the world. really there is no interest in reakwon or ghostface over here in europe – we got our own deeper and more conscious hiphop for the heads and your bs like 50 cent and so on for the uneducated masses. (not that i dont like reakwon tho…)
so get over yourself, that list is pretty spot on if you see it as a list for the world, and not just your little place that america is
Wow. Modest Mouse is way too underrated. They made so many songs that should have made this list. Float On isnt even their best song by a long shot. Modest Mouse definitely deserves more credit for their music, but I am glad that more good artists made the list, but why did Rihanna and Kanye West make the list? Rihanna plainly sucks and so does Kanye west. I am not a rap fan, but I can understand why Eminem made the list. He was good for the musical genre of rap in the 90s, but started to become horrible in the past few years. I just hope none of Katy Perry’s songs made the list.
It’s a little silly that there is so much Kings of Leon. They’re a solid group, but there are better, more deserving candidates.
Sufjan Stevens should be in the top ten for Illinoise, and then should have had some mention for his songs.
Did they only go with singles, promotional or otherwise?
It’s silly that Modest Mouse’s The Moon and Antarctica didn’t crack the top 100, but the mention of “Float On” was nice.
Turning the flip side, I’m very pleased to see my all time favorite album of all time, Death Cab for Cutie’s Transatlanticism, make the list. It is disappointing, however, not to see “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” from Plans on the songs list.
Glad to see Phoenix and MGMT on the list, but as much as I absolutely love them, honestly, they are ranked rather high. Especially MGMT. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a stellar record, but not even top 50 stuff.
I’m actually pretty happy with the top ten, aside from the unjust exclusion of Illinois. I have not heard Modern Times, but again, it’s a very fair top ten. Hard to argue with any of it.
Beirut’s Gulag Orkestar is NOT even mentioned and you call this “best 100″ list?
Wait…..Graduation, Black Album, Get rich or die tryin, Late registration are higher than the Eminem Show ??? And Blueprint is higher than Marshall Matters Lp ?? RS, You are kidding Right ?
WTF !!!! 808′s And Heartbreaks higher than The Eminem Show ???? I love this list(*sigh*)
Fuck yeah MGMT should be in the top albums list. If you really listen to their music, it’s actually pretty fucking good, better than good, it’s great. I think congratulations was a better album than Oracular but hey the fact that they’re even on the list is great.
Glad to see a lot of other great bands up here as well such as The Strokes, The White Stripes, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and Bright Eyes.
4/4 Kanye West albums! That says something about him as an artist.
Who every put gnarls barkley “crazy” as the best song of the 00′s was crazy themselves. Top 100 was not that good just because u like one or more bands than others doesn’t mean u should not have put them down, there r thousands of bands out in the oo’s that had songs that were great. Do u think these r the 100 best songs, than u r crazy because i never herd Crazy hitting number 1 or him being that good. They r predictable not original.
Well I can agree with the list even though I can’t agree with Jay-Z being top 10 but I have to remember that at the time blueprint came out is when his originality was at his best but now every music Jay-Z comes out with just sounds like the blueprint album just with different lyrics so i’m glad anything after blueprint did not make the top 10.
NO LINKIN PARK ? BULLSHIT
no linkin park, i mean Hybrid theory?
No Linkin Park??? One of the biggest bands of the 2000′s… Hybrid Theory a huge sucessful album which is one of the highest selling ablum’s in the 2000′s… So sad…
Where is Continuum – John Mayer? didn’t even make the top 100? Are you kidding me?
You know that one record by that band that was really hot for those 2 months and headlined some festival and nobody ever heard of them again? They should be #1 bitcheS!!!
God DAMN! Reading the comments some of you people are leaving makes me wonder if you’re not retarded.
Then I read your follow-ups and I realize that you are.
Stankonia by outkast was easily the best album of the decade it blows kid A out of the water, and the fact that they put college dropout ahead of any outkast album is a joke! I think kanye deserves to be in the top 20 but never ahead of outkast.
Kala by M.I.A is an AMAZING album and I’m super happy it made it in the top ten, but I think it’s much better than funeral.
Anyway outkast is untouchable stankonia is number one by a blowout. Oh question? how the fuck are you gonna put lil wayne in there, but not Dizzee rascals boy in da corner?
i guess it goes without saying, but your post is hard to read
