From what we know, Trent’s upcoming North American trek is gonna be an all-out A/V assault, and possibly maybe like nothing you’ve ever seen: The NYT mentioned Reznor was collaborating with his go-to graphics guy Rob Sheridan and the Montreal-based company Moment Factory to construct three (giant) screens and utilize “disorienting effects” — including moving “a video frame across a musician [to change] the sound of his guitar” — in service of making “the stage … an interactive instrument.” Because that sentence is awesome but also gave at least four people seizures simply reading it, this video of NIN rehearsing the The Slip‘s “1,000,000″ is a must-see tour tease. NIN’s sounding pretty menacing.

  1. I’ve hated everything Trent Reznor’s done UNTIL The Slip. Fucking epic album, brilliant. That video is fantastic.

NIN got a little QOTSA going on there. I don’t mean that in a bad way, and do hate pigeonholing a sound for the sake of easy comparison, but I’m making an acceptation here b/c that’s a cool ass song.

    BTW P4K.tv is awesome.

  3. Goddamn it Trent why are you making me go back to the Forum?

    • the Forum is a shambling, unpleasant place, a venue most wouldn’t want to visit after dark. it’s reminiscent of that evil corner of the human heart, where nightmares reign, where sanity slips just a bit…where reality is skewed.

either that, or trent gets a bigger slice of the ticket revenue.

I saw NIN two years ago on the “With Teeth” tour and they had a pretty stage setup.

Lollapalooza has a fairly good track record of accommodating headliners’ abilities to perform their live show – stage, lights & all. I’m hoping those parentheses don’t translate into seeing a watered-down version of this, though I have my hopes that I’ll be in the clear. (Ditto for Radiohead.)

  6. I haven’t been to the Key Arena since Pavement were still a band, but I might have to make the trek up for this one.

    @tk.

You’ll also want to hit up the Capitol Hill Block Party before and after the NIN show at The Key. You might just be in time for Girl Talk and Chromeo doing their sets.

  8. Why is a fortysomething man singing those lyrics? They’re barely an improvement on “Head like a hole/black as your soul/I’d rather die/than give you control.” The lyrics to a tossed-off Robert Pollard song buried on an obscure limited edition Fading Captain EP are more profound than this dogshit.

this is coliseum centre saddledome arena forum ampitheatre STADIUM music, isn’t it?

Who listens to lyrics? I’m not too concerned with what he’s saying. It’s all about how it sounds. It’s music, after all. Not a treatise on the meaning of life.

    • Hmm, it must be nice to have the ability to ignore Trent’s lyrics. I’d check out that whole instrumental “Ghosts” thing, but it still features his music, so I guess I’m out of luck.

      • So, should we talk instead about the gibberish that Thom Yorke tries to pass off as lyrics? Here’s some from Kid A…

        Kid A, Kid A
        Kid A, Kid A
        Everything
        Everything
        Everything
        Everything in its right place
        In its right place
        In its right place
        In its right place

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon

I suppose there’s some profoundly spiritual message conveyed through the varying intonations as your rock god repeats and repeats every one of his cute little phrases.

Or maybe you’d rather sing-a-long to Ok Computer…

        That’s it, sir
        You’re leaving
        The crackle of pigskin
        The dust and the screaming
        The yuppies networking
        The panic, the vomit
        The panic, the vomit
God loves his children, God loves his children, yeah!

Hmmm… I can’t figure their meaning exactly, but these lyrics seem vaguely angst-y and sarcastic. Almost like something Trent might write. Very strange that they’re being sung by a 39 year old, too.

See, kidacomputerok? Lyrics are difficult to write and even the greatest fail miserably at times. Keep talking trash about Nine Inch Nails, though, because it gives me the pep I need to get through my boring work day!

        • LOL. I’d say there’s a vast difference between writing surrealistic/nonsensical gobbledegook like you cited (see also: Deerhoof and Cocteau Twins) and writing nothing but straightforward attempts at capturing human misery over and over again (seriously, this song sounds like it might have been on “Pretty Hate Machine.” Is this how far he’s come in 20 years?). When Trent started ripping off Big Black at the beginning of his career (particularly the “Broken” period) the least he could have done is borrowed Alibini’s ability to find humor in the aforementioned misery. Of course, when he tries (Starfuckers, Inc.) the outcome is disastrous. Why people think Reznor is some kind of genius is beyond me.

  11. It’s somehow less than they’re capable of, but every bit as good. I don’t even know what I mean by that. But yeah, Kanye will be largely ignored.

    Go JMJ!

  13. hey- is that Justin Mendal-Johnson????

  14. Yes, that is Justin. He started playing with NIN this year. I guess he is not doin the Modern Guilt tour.

I guess that’s the bass player you’re referring to. I thought he looked familiar. This will be a cool addition to his resume. I’ll admit it, I never thought he would be considered for NIN? In fact, at 1st glance, I thought it was the the dude from Battles … nothing against Justin but THAT would kick ass.
