Billy Corgan had some words for Radiohead and their “pomposity” in a recent interview. Here’s Billy:
I can’t think of any people outside of Weird Al Yankovic who have both embraced and pissed on Rock more than I have. Obviously there’s a level of reverence, but there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on. ‘Cause I’m not pissing on Rainbow. I’m not pissing on Deep Purple. But I’ll piss on fuckin’ Radiohead, because of all this pomposity. This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in, buddy. Not in the world I grew up in.
So I find myself defending things. Is Ritchie Blackmore a better guitar player than me and Jonny Greenwood? Yes. Have we all made contributions? Yes. I’m not attacking that. I’m attacking the pomposity that says this is more valuable than that. I’m sick of that. I’m so fucking sick of it, and nobody seems to tire of it.

Billy’s right, we’re all equal. Isn’t life great?
Everyone’s a winner, and we’re all going out for ice cream with coach Corgan!
Snow cone? I like cherry! Or grape… They’re both favorites… but cherry is a little bit more favorite. but they’re both good. Yeah, they’re both good!
You’re not Brian Regan.
Can we get a link to the interview he’s referencing? What did Radiohead even say that was filled with “pomposity”?
Not referring to something Radiohead ever said, hes referring rather to this generation of music fan that says “this” is better than “that”. So..Radiohead fans filled with pomposity? I’ll believe that any day.
But he didn’t say Radiohead fans, he said Radiohead, so I’d also like to know what specifically Radiohead has done or said to warrant this attack. It’s like everyone giving shit to the L.A. Kings because their fans are all jumping on the bandwagon now that they’ve won the Cup. The Kings players didn’t do anything to warrant that hate and as far as I can tell, neither has Radiohead. It’s just that some people (Corgan) can’t handle other people being more popular than they are.
They made music better than the Smashing Pumpkins so now he’s all upset.
I feel like this is being interpreted for us by the folks here:

he’s not attacking Radiohead. he used them as an example to make a point. right in the second paragraph he said he wasn’t bashing them or Jonny Greenwood for their contributions. granted, it was a bit of a rambling point that could be easily misunderstood… he doesn’t even call Radiohead pompous, he’s talking of the idea of valuing one thing over the other, etc.
I feel like i’m the only one who got this… i had to read it twice, but it seems to me that’s the point he’s making.
Rereading it in that light, I can see what you’re saying, and I think he is actually saying something more like that. It seems to me he’s just angry that people think some art is better than other art, where as he would just like everyone to appreciate all art equally.
I read it once, FWIW…and he’s figured out something that never even crosses the mind of way too many makers of AND listeners to music, something that transcends generationally, and more power to him for “getting it”.
“I’m attacking the pomposity that says this is more valuable than that. I’m sick of that. I’m so fucking sick of it, and nobody seems to tire of it.”
Did you miss that part much? As far as LA goes…hey I was a Lakers fan when I watched basketball and we (LA fans) tend to jump on the bandwagons faster than anyone. Its a good excuse to get rowdy and drink beer, I won’t give them shit. Its all my friends doing it.
Its funny, how I can easily see the problems in the things I like and you’re so blindly in radiohead love that you glaze over statements that specifically prove you wrong.
That second post wasn’t directed at Eric Stevenson, but at David Valento btw.
I’m a Radiohead fan and don’t really find it appropriate for you to bucket us as pretentious. I like a lot of Corgan’s music but think that he has definitely had some crappy contributions to music (Zwan). Maybe this explains why he is so bitter about the opinions of the masses and music critics- because we identified Zwan as a piece of crap. I envy anyone that would say I’m being pretentious, because I wish I was able to find joy in listening to such a terrible album.
Is it pretentious to have an opinion? No. Is calling an entire group of people pretentious or talking about the “pomposity” of music pretentious? Perhaps. Billy Corgan fires his entire band about every two years.. would you do this? To me, this seems like something a total jerk would do, but I don’t know Billy Corgan personally and I wouldn’t want to be labeled as pretentious for having a sound opinion on the matter.
Dude… You’re missing the point. Corgan’s trying to say that this generation of musicians and music-listeners has trouble withholding their assumed-to-be-valuable judgments. I think that Corgan may have a point, but his argument provides no logic or evidence.

and I don’t understand how anyone who appreciates popular modern music can call what radiohead does as ‘…garbage they call music’. I mean it’s one thing if it’s not your style, but aren’t you being a little disingenuous?
LOL. “Pretentious” — the go-to insult of people who want to defend their lack of intelligence.

R. Kelly–r & b’s greatest pisser.
if billy had a weakness for pissing on 13 year olds, i guess it would be his R. Kelly’s heel.
What a jerk; it’s hardly Radiohead’s (or even Johnny’s) fault if people admire Johnny’s music and playing.
That’s not what he’s saying.
‘But I’ll piss on fuckin’ Radiohead, because of all this pomposity. This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in, buddy.’ He’s obviously at least a bit annoyed with Radiohead if he’s willing to piss on them…(He also seems to be mad at the pompous ‘value system’, but in that case, why is he pissing on Radiohead? Can’t he just hold it in till the next McDonalds?)
He’s not, he’s talking about the critics and that values system He even says that Ritchie Blackmore is better than himself.
I think it’s funny how NME and Stereogum have proven his point, quoting something he says and put it so out of context and than every radiohead fan cry about it, and they don’t even read what he’s saying!
But even if the point is that he doesn’t think one type of music or art or whatever should be categorised as better than any other, then I would answer a) Mind your own business, I’ll categorise things however I want, and b) People naturally like some things more than others so how do expect them not to express that.
He comes off like a fucking idiot in this little rant.
DRAMA its so annoying and tedious
You’ll find radiohead tend to have well educated, intelligent fans, meaning, you are not the only one who “caught on”. congrats thougH!!!!1!!!1!!111!!!!!!!!1

As a huge Radiohead fan, I have to inform you, that statement is grossly incorrect.
hahahaha i know i was just joking. big fan of both bands, but not pumpkins anymore. not the same band without original crew. first three albums were so on point though. i found it funny that corgan said the new album was the best pumpkins album in 15 years. should have just said “pumpkins haven’t made a decent album in 15 years”. but for real though, radiohead >>>>>. and there was absolutely no need to take shots at Jonny, come on now. the man is just simply a genius musician. i suggest that mr. corgan attends a radiohead show and watches jonny the whole time. maybe then he’ll understand.
Man, your a weirdo. What the hell are you doing here? You don’t belong here.
I see what you did there.
what you did there.
why was this downvoted earlier? WHAT IS UP WITH THAT
This is stereogum. They take things out of context and turn it into “news”!
FYI I met Corgan when I was younger and he was one of the nicest people in Rock N Roll. I’ve met Greenwood and Yorke as well and they were equally cool.
But are you nice and cool?
Once I met Jeff Goldblum

And Billy Corgan DOESN’T play with rawness and emotion?
No, he pisses on it, remember?
I dont think he is pissing on radiohead literally. come on stereogum, it was clear in his second paragraph.
im not billie corgan fanboy but dont blow this out of proportion.
I don’t think anybody thought he was literally going to piss on them. That would just be gross.
Actually, when i read that title, i honestly thought that Billy Corgan was threatening to literally piss on the members of Radiohead while they were having sex.
its called “wet work” guys!!!!!!
“there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on” It’s what separates us from the animals.
Someday, I hope that I develop a mature emotional palette so I can react to things like an adult. Until then, though:

What does it matter whats relevant to a stupid teenage girl?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I can’t stand that term!!!!
‘relevant’ the way it’s used these days. sorry for the outburst.
:pats on shoulder:
I understand, LeMonjello. I understand.
Every time I hear the term used in that way, I want to ask, “relevant to what?”
thank you for being a friend
Relevant to IT, man.
“He is not relevant, and he needs to shut his bald face.”
Neither are you and yet you are commenting. Double standards–the main reason as to why people started hating hipsters.
Opinions are opinions. Such as mine: Radiohead’s records are a hundred times more interesting than the Pumpkins’ records. ESPECIALLY the newer ones.
man why does he think ritchie greenwood is still relevant. i think sterling morrisson was more of an influential guitar player on todays artists than ritchie ever was
and if he’s going to play the “hey this is stupid that johnny greenwood is getting all the attention when ritchie blackmore is way better” card, then I’ll counter with the “then what about django fucking reinhardt” card
Well that kind of came out of no where now, didn’t it?
johnny greenwood > ritchie blackmore >>>>>>>>>>>>> billy corgan
That’ll do, Billy. That’ll do.
Hey Billy, thanks for creating a false dichotomy that makes it even more difficult for me to defend my love of 70′s cock rock to my cooler friends.

Cock rock is a real thing.
is it really? that might make it funnier
The man is infatuated with urine.
He’s not that far off base – I’ve been saying the same thing about Dio and Thom Yorke for years. In casual conversation I’ve noticed that comparisons between Rainbow and Radiohead are about as common as stray comments about current meteorological conditions.
Hmmm… So Billy Corgan thinks its his job to “piss on” anything or anyone that doesn’t meet his standard, and in the same breath he complains that people are too pompous and judgmental.
Some people might say that’s a little pompous. Perhaps Billy Corgan should go piss himself.
I’d be cranky too if I was secretly in love with Courtney Love.
Isn’t everyone? Or was I supposed to not say anything?
He’s saying in the past there have been articles about him pissing on Radiohead because he has a habit of mouthing off about things that upset him contextually, but don’t actually. You know, like this article here.
it seems like Corgan has misplaced his ill will and projected it directly at Radiohead themselves as opposed to his perception of how Radiohead is treated by fans and the media. cuz how are they pompous at all? they’re pretty humble, quiet guys from what i can tell in interviews i’ve read and seen. sounds like Corgan is just not a fan of how Radiohead is made out to be.
And Billy, how often are you getting into Greenwood vs. Ritchie arguments??
no, my opinion of what he’s saying is that he’s actually attacking the pretentious circles that praise the likes of arty bands like Radiohead, while completely dismissing bands like Deep Purple as cheesy classic rock.
he’s not calling Radiohead pompous; he’s calling the elitist who kneel at their altar and shun everything else to be. and in that he has a valid criticism.
alright, so very close to what i said.
and right, he isn’t calling Radiohead pompous. i missed that the 1st time around
also, and this is pretty much off-topic…but man, Thom Yorke would never release an album and tour with himself and a bunch of random musicians and call it Radiohead.
It’s Jonny Greenwood. No ‘h’ anywhere.
I actually wrote that before looking at the comments. n_n
This is why Corgan has been incapable of making a good album for the last 15 years…his musical tastes ossified some time around 1975.
Who the fuck is Billy Corgan?… Oh yeah, it’s that guy from that one band I stopped listening to before the 90′s were even over. Weh, weh, weh.
I highly doubt Jonny has ever been upset about not being able to play a Ritchie Blackmore-esque solo
How do you know he can’t? Maybe he’s just hiding the ability to rawk so that Billy Corgan will piss on him.
awesome. really awesome.
Speaking of pomposity, I was just thinking of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness the other day.
How dare you suggest that releasing a 28 song loose-concept album arranged in relation to the progression of a day is pompous! The very IDEA.
Who’s Jonny Greenwood? Who’s Ritchie Blackmore?
Yeeeah! Right on Billy. Piss on those fucking pretentious, Starbucks-drinking, hipster wannabes. That is exactly what a radiohead fan nowadays is.
a few…but if you GO to the concerts, you see a giant cross-section of this country…it’s actually pretty funny to watch, STILL mainly cool looking 25-40 yr olds BUT, funny 5+% of ‘dads’ out there too…saw a few pairs of Ben and Jerry looking guys a the Chicago show sunday, some moms too…some people of african decent as well. to me the only negative with RH hype is the inclusion of SOME meathead idiot fans the last 10 yrs, like Kid Rock lovin’ type idiots…BUT, i’m still surprised that those types are still as few as they are thank god.
wow, you don’t even give them the satisfaction of being a hipster, but a ‘hipster wannabe’.
Yeah I’m talking about the kids imitating their now 35-40 year old brothers and sisters. The same ones who post how great the 90s were and are reaching the ripe old age of 14.
I’ll agree, sometimes that 90′s nostalgia can seem a bit forced and weird.
Those bother you? LOL, at your first world problems.
Weird Al in interviews seems like the nicest and coolest guy on the planet, no reason to bring him into your inane diatribe, buddy.
He mentioned Weird Al, but he wasn’t dissing him.
he implied weird al pisses on rock
He calls Weird Al’s treatment of rock a more extreme version of his own. He says that Al has embraced it and pissed on it. That is kind of the essence of his best parodies. I have been a Weird Al fan since I was a kid, and I was not at all offended by what Corgan said about him. Reading comprehension skills are very important in life.
What is more pompous than his opening line? This is a sly and desperate plea for a golden shower.
as much as i cringe when billy goes off like this, i can’t help but identify with what he said a little. i understand radiohead’s course for reinvention in order for them to still be interested in what they do, but as an early fan, i fondly remember when they were a guitar band.
besides, how many of you are 45 and raised on 70s and 80s guitar rock and indie rock? of course you’re all mad.
this is from the Billy Corgan Wikipedia: Corgan has praised Radiohead, saying “if they’re not the best band in the world, then they’re one of the best”
he just likes causing some sort of stir before he releases an album. he should just work on songs. i miss the old stuff.
i’m guessing its just a personal whiney thing about Blackmore not being more guitar worshipped as he thinks he should be, he surly wasn’t even mentioned on that horrible Spin top 100 list, THAT might it right there.
It sounds like he’s just annoyed some of idols don’t get any loving. A little misplaced? Probably. Love em both though.
I’m not your friend, buddy.
Well, I’m not your buddy, friend!
Is Radiohead better than Deep Purple? In my opinion YES. Is Johnny Greenwood better than Ritchie Blackmore? NO FUCKING WAY!
of fucking COURSE Radiohead is better than Deep Purple hahaha, it’s not even fucking close! hahaha, to even ask that question is hilarious. that’s like uhh idk Are the Monkees as good as The Stones? or something.
Well to people his age and older Deep Purple would win the vote is what im saying. Purple are a forgotten beast these days, but they are one of the Great bands of all time. So when you compare them to the Monkees….well thats just fucking dumb.
i didn’t compare them to the monkees. it’s a completely mental ill comparison though, you’re comparing an extremely talented modern band, the best band of modern music bar none who goes in 100 different musical directions with a classic rock straight forward band with a boring singer and and handful of good riffs…it’s apples and plastic vaginas.
err i meant vagina rings:)
Deep Purple is much Bigger and important band then radiohead, it i not iven in the same league.

I think you misread the quote. He said he would piss on Radiohead. He didn’t say anything about shit.
Do I smell a Billy Corgan/R.Kelly collaboration in the works?
Finally, someone is taking a stand in the long and horrible Blackmore/Greenwood fued… What the fuck? This is the dumbest shit ever to get pissed off about I’ve ever seen. Was Billy Corgan on some thread on King Crimson’s fan page when he got into a argument with a twelve-year-old about Johnny Greenwood? Then subsequently was so worked up he’s gone on a crusade to tear Radiohead down a few notches? Who in their right mind would bring this up? Where did the comparison of Blackmore and Greenwood come from? What the fuck??????????????
Ha Ha Ha That was fantastic!
Stereogum completely made this “beef” up. There is no beef here. Right there in the second fucking paragraph, read it. He doesn’t “have words” for Jonny Greenwood, nor is he calling Radiohead out for their “pomposity.” He used Jonny Greenwood as an example (he’s been quoted as giving Radiohead high praise) to make a point; a point (maybe a vague one) that should be clear to anyone with basic reading comprehension.
So for cryin’ out loud; I wish people would read a little more closely before announcing there’s a beef. And apparently most of the people who read this quote went along with it, too. He’s not bashing Greenwood, and he’s not bashing Radiohead, and he’s not comparing Blackmore to Greenwood. Fuckin’ READ, people!
And for the record, I’ve loved SP since 1993, but I’ll be first to admit Corgan’s creative well is long-since dried up.
Oh ok, “I’ll piss on fucking Radiohead” isn’t an insult. You’re right.
WEIRD AL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn’t see that one coming!
jonny greenwood is simply a musical genius, not just a simple guitar and has received praise from legendary composers as Krzysztof Penderecki and Steve Reich .. WIN WIN
You might be a little stuck up too if you were the head of the radio.
Just wait until Mr. Corgan discovers Chuck Closterman! His bald head will explode with the knowledge that someone understands him: Poison is > than The Velvet Underground. They influenced more people and with less hipster pomposity. How dare these hipster people flaunt their good taste!
He can argue anything he wants and i totally actually understand his point but to make it sound like it’s Radiohead’s FAULT, it 100% ridiculous and off-base. Radiohead their whole careers have gone out of their way to be the anti-rockstars, the anti-Oasis cocky assholes. SO to whine about them directly is just asinine. MAYBE you could go after Thom Yorke if you really wanted to, BUT even then, all the ‘proof’ you need to see about them not wanting to be famous and worshipped is in Meeting People Is Easy where they nearly imploded cause they didn’t WANT the spotlight! haha…oh Billy Billy. And Jonny Greenwood is a very respected guitarist but no one’s naming him better than Jimmy Page etc, we LOVE him it’s not the same thing. BUT maybe he’s just mad cause he loves Ritchie Blackmore and is pissed he isn’t listed higher in those ‘best guitarist of all time’ lists….who knows who cares.
Everything is Radiohead’s fault, and if this were an article on Yahoo News, someone would respond to my post by saying that Radiohead is Obama’s fault.
“Cool Story Chap”
-Thom Yorke
And I my friend, will vomit on Mr. Corgan’s elbow.
This totally calls for Hell in a Cell at this summer’s Summerslam…
Seeeeeeeriously hurtin’ for page views.
Eh. It’s just Billy being Billy. Only now it’s older, grumpier Billy, instead of younger, everything sucks Billy.
I kind of get his point regarding how our society now tears one thing down in order to ascribe value to another. But the “I’ll piss on Radiohead” comment is just hyperbole. And calling out ANYBODY ELSE for their “pomposity” is pure irony coming from Billy.
I’ll ALWAYS love A LOT of Smashing Pumpkins music. I hope I love more of it in the years to come. But Billy himself, although clearly intelligent, has become one of those old musicians you read about growing up who hated all the “new music” you were really into.
That’ll be a 0.0/10 review from Pitchfork for the new album then!
Why are most of the up/down thumbs grey for me? Not all of them, just most. Stereogum totally hates me this week.
Wow. First I was totally surprised that somebody would give that comment an up vote, but I’m even more confused by the fact that anybody would bother to give it down vote. Haters will hate.
ha…every single comment of mine in here got -3…even the ones that were tiny nothing comments, love it. badge of honor in haterville i reckon.
I feel the same way. It’s only teh internets, after all.
Jesus Stereogum, this is pathetic. If this is how you genuinely interpreted that quote, go back to remedial English.
In all fairness to Stereogum, they didn’t do a whole lot of interpreting. “Billy Corgan Will ‘Piss on Fucking Radiohead’” is pretty close to a direct quote. Most of the interpreting has been done by the commenters in this comment section.
No, but they are unquestionably selling it as if that’s what he meant, that he feels enough hostility towards Radiohead that he would piss on them, which is completely wrong.
Yeah, I hate to chime in again, but it bears repeating: Stereogum’s editors royally misinterpreted this quote and have presented it as a beef. He isn’t saying any of the damn things you’re accusing him of, and now everyone is reading it through your filter and taking it the wrong way. You wonder why some people start to hate music writers…
In the meantime, learn to read.
I think most of these people know how to read, and that we’re all just irritated that Billy Corgan says a lot of dumb things
Aw, someone’s a little miffed that his band isn’t as awesome as it once was.
Obviously there’s a level of reverence, but there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on. ‘Cause I’m not pissing on Royale. I’m not pissing on Cottonelle. But I’ll piss on fuckin’ Charmin, because of all this extra ply. This value system that says Charmin is more valuable than Cottonelle. Not in the world I grew up in, buddy. Not in the world I grew up in.
This kid ^^^, he can stay.
The annoying part of all of this is that anyone can claim anyone’s interpretation of the quote is “taken out of context”–because there is no context. Billy is attacking this “pomposity” without attributing it to any person or group of people or thing (though it seems like he’s attacking “kids these days!” or critics or some particular value system).
I won’t hate on him for it, but to be fair, I certainly would argue that Jonny Greenwood is a better guitarist than Ritchie Blackmore and Radiohead a vastly better band than either Deep Purple or Rainbow, but that’s based on my own criteria. I would also consider Billy Corgan a better guitarist than Ritchie Blackmore.
Billy’s criteria would put those bands on an even level and ranks Ritchie Blackmore as a better guitarist, and that’s fine–just at least show some respect for people with different opinions than yours, or else maybe someone will up the ante and decide to shit on your views.
This is the best thing Billy could have done. He should start pissing on more bands. It will stop him from pissing on his own band’s legacy.
That’s the way his love is. ♥
“Pomposity” isn’t something Corgan should complain about.
…says the guy who has started on a megalomaniac project of an unlimited album of 10000 songs to be released on a continuous flow between two years ago and eternity.
Yeah, this is just for to get some hype for the album. After listening to it I’m convinced hype will be the only thing it has going for it.
I feel like a very bitter Smashing Pumpkins fan now.
I have homosexual tendencies.
I’m sorry Billy, but.. You kind of suck.
The title of this article really sounds like an announcement of some event that is literally going to happen. “LCD Soundsystem Will Play Final Show at MSG.” “Billy Corgan Will Piss on Fucking Radiohead.” Anybody know if dates were announced yet? I don’t wanna miss the presage.
Jeez STEREOGUM! This is so out of context omg!! Everyone knows this is an excerpt from his next collection of terrible poetry. Looks like he’s gotten worse at it too.
Utter hypocrite. He’s got his own value system in saying Ritchie Blackmore’s a better guitarist. Billy needs a mirror. I’m in Sharon Osbourne’s camp on this.
Ah, making friends wherever we go, eh?
There’s actually an interview with Billy at SXSW where he’s asked which artists of today are making great albums, and Billy answers Radiohead.
It’s been said before, but I don’t think this is a specific attack on Radiohead. Again, headline taken WAY out of context.
Also, there is one word which makes all the difference in stereogums article, which seems to be stirring all the trouble -
‘Billy Corgan had some words for Radiohead and THEIR “pomposity” in a recent interview.’
where as billy really said -
‘I’m attacking THE pomposity that says this is more valuable than that.’
At no point did he say it was Radiohead’s pomposity
“I’m attacking the pomposity that says this is more valuable than that.” Followed by, “This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in, buddy. Not in the world I grew up in.” Someone sounds like a hypocrite.
I guess it’s hard watching a band from that sprang into popularity around the same time you did continually push boundaries and blow away critics and the public alike while you fade into obscurity peddling the same guitar tone and five drop D riffs you started with 20 years ago.
You’ve got to be kidding. Billy Corgan? Wierd Al Yankovich?? Richie Blackmore??? WTF. Why not Nigel Tufnel???? Save your pee, dude. You’ll probably just dribble in your shoe, anyway.
All you Billy apologists bitching about context are dumb.
He’s had plenty of experience with the media. He should know better. He’s an adult. There are better ways to articulate this without involving bodily functions or specific names. Whoever the target, this is an immature way to speak for an old man.
He said it, and Stereogum didn’t present it in any other way than of mild interest. They have to create new content everyday and sometimes there’s just nothing. And the site is free! and they linked to a stream of the album!
Fuck Billy. Adore rules.
Sterogum: Freshly Squeezed Pomposity
I spelled it wrong for copyright reasons.
I want to say something witty, but Aubrey Plaza won’t stop staring at me
In what world does Billy have the right to “piss” on anything? He hasn’t been relevant to any serious musical discussions since the late 90s and although he never directly insults Radiohead or Jonny, why even mention them if he didn’t have an issue with them? If you don’t want to be ridiculed do not even bring up controversial examples that people can misquote or take out of context. It sounds like someone is jealous of being a tiny footnote in the shadow of a greater artist, otherwise he would have never diminished them indirectly by saying they get more hyped than they deserve. If anything he should be “pissed” on for his pompous “endless” album thats been in the works since the day he believed he was god.
He’s probably angry because in the alternative world all of his billboard charting singles don’t mean a damn thing. He seems to think that selling records affords artists some level of respect, oh please.
“I’m attacking the pomposity that says this is more valuable than that.” Followed by, “This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in, buddy. Not in the world I grew up in.” Someone sounds like a hypocrite.
pomposity must have come up on his word of the day calendar and needed a way to use it. can he just go away?
One of the most famous lines from the Zoo TV tour screens….. “Taste is the enemy of art”
Raindrops + (Golden) Sunshowers.
People aren’t sick of Radiohead yet? I thought they were.
not until other bands come along who can actually record A good album….good luck finding any post 2001 band who can pull off that trick.
Radiohead sucks.
Careful man you’ll be swarmed by idiotic Radiohead fanboys for that opinion.
Who gives ashit
he says that a “this is more valuable than that” mentality is pompous. well, by dissing that worldview and opting for a “value is indiscernible mentality,” isn’t he essentially valuing one mentality over another? sounds a bit illogical…and naive to say that people aren’t allowed to value things.
why is lord voldemort talking about pissing on people?
http://butimnotajournalist.blogspot.com/
Can’t believe no one made a joke about ‘streaming’ his new album.
Idk in all honesty I got really sad when he dated Tila Tequila, that crazy stupid !#%!#^! midget from mars. Billy, Really? you could do SO much better than that!
As far as him taking a piss out on the state of Rock n roll today… Good on him. it’s the critics, (not the trolls) that push artists of all kinds to hopefully strive to be better after constructive feedback. I’m not sure this was constructive, but it definitely counts as feedback…and sometimes BLUNT feedback is necessary to get another’s attention!
Have you seen her porn videos? I mean, come on! Its not like he married her. I think the reasons a forty-something Billy Corgan would “date” Tila Tequila are pretty obvious.
OK, here’s Billy’s clarification to this. Again, if anyone actually read what he said a little more carefully they’d know this was the point he was making all along anyway, but maybe that’s expecting too much of people.
Bravo to Stereogum and even Pitchfork for making up this shit about a beef.
“It’s not Radiohead that’s pompous; in fact, I think Radiohead is a great band. It’s the pomposity that surrounds Radiohead in a culture that needs to celebrate them to reaffirm their own value system. Like, “Isn’t it cool that Thom Yorke just rolls out of bed, puts on his hat, and doesn’t care?” That’s people reflecting their own values back to themselves. That’s the pomposity. That’s what I said in that quote.
A band like Radiohead is incredibly important; it should be that way. They’re a great band; they should have their audience; they should headline the festivals. The reviewers should write the four pages of reviews while they comb through Thom’s lyrics. They’re deserved of that. It’s the culture around that, that same culture that turns around and says my new release is worthy of a one-paragraph thing that dismisses me and says he hasn’t done anything good since ’93. Am I receiving the same level of critical review? No. They need to put people like me in that box to make their other box look brighter. That’s my point. It’s football players; it’s jocks and stoners and nerds all over again. And now the nerds are running the fucking show?”
Case closed.
however, yes, still plenty of ego involved here. totally different story. in this case i’m more concerned with clearing up misinformation…
Too bad so few people will ever read his explanation, and that a good chunk of those who do will react exactly as he’s describing them.
that’s pretty fuckin’ APT…all the shit bands getting ‘pub’ is all the proof you need…
What’s shit to you is gold to someone else. What’s gold to you is shit to someone else. It’s the way of life since human beings became human beings. Get over it already.
What’s funny is that his “explanation” is still a shitty reason to “piss” on anyone. How childish. Grow up, already.
“Has RItchie Blackmore made contributions? Yes! Have I made contributions?”
Really??? contributions to what? MOR “alternapop” circa early nineties. Oh, wonderful! That’s like saying
“I contributed to the creation of Tab soda.. Jesus what a pompous “ZERO” (remember the shirt?) Fact is, Greenwood may not be more important than Blackmore, but he is definitely made more contributions than Billy boy.
Mr. Corgan is not one to piss upon anyone, as he is indeed as pompous as they come.
I look forward to what NME has to say about Liam Gallagher ‘s response to all this :|
Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album:
As of 2012, Radiohead and The White Stripes share the record for the most wins in this category, having won three times each. With seven nominations to date, Radiohead holds the record for the most nominations in this category.
Smashing Pumpkins – nominated twice, won none.
i love you billy but stay the fuck off my radiohead.
If you look at the 2011 list of the best Guitarists of all time put out by Rolling Stone, you will see that Blackmore is listed as 51. Johnny Greenwood is listed at 48. As I read through this, I see that a lot of people are giving Corgan credit for something deeper than it actually is. What he really doesn’t like is that he isn’t listed above Greenwood. I dont think he even made the list. He is simply using Blackmore as a surrogate, so he doesn’t sound like a complete self important douche. Oops. Too late.
Okay …so Radiohead is pompus. Yes. Richie Blackmore is a bad ass, yes,. Billy ( really …He calls himself Billy still ..wow) is trying to play Transcendental Guru. Without Richie Blackmore ther would be no Yngvie , and without Pompus there would be no Thurston (Sonic YOuth) . But I have to say he is right about Soundgarden, and any leftover Grunge crap soaking up the 20 year itchy bitchy check. Sad enough as Uncle Fester is ( aka Billy ) he has survived loss. I mean playing in a band with a girl bass player is hard enough, but losing members to drug addiction like they did on the verge of what was suppose to be the Grandeous “Meloncholy Tour” does give him a rite of passage in someway. What the Pumpkin Smasher doesnt know is that 1979 , Tonight and “Today is the greatest ” was his time. Like Eminem said to Moby …”Shut up old man, what are you like 40 or something” …we all get our moment in the sun. Too bad for Billy it was a 2 hour too long set list show in 1996 that made his lasting power die. The days he can wear his glittery silver shirt are long gone. He will be doing raves soon. just you wait. Him and Moby can open for LMFAO …and noone will know the wiser.
btw….to the guy that said this : {”Shut up old man, what are you like 40 or something” …we all get our moment in the sun. Too bad for Billy it was a 2 hour too long set list show in 1996 that made his lasting power die…”} you, dear person are going to be old someday, too. your time is coming just you wait. you’ll turn around and go..”huh….how did i get to be 50, when did that happen and where did all those wrinkles come from” MARK MY WORDS.

Billy is a real musician, not a poser, what he sais in this interview is true.
Wow. So that means if I ever were to meet Mr. Corgan and talked about music with him he’d send a hit man after me.
Do I think prog rock is more “valuable” than other forms of rock? Hell, yeah! From the time I discovered YES when I was 12 till about I was 35 years old the only music I listened was prog rock. It was U2 who slowly pulled me away from my prog rock trance and I finally realized there’s some other types of rock music that’s worthy to listen to.
My taste in music today is all over the place but I’ll always consider prog rock as the ultimate and most exquisite form of rock music, and I ain’t apologizing to Mr. Corgan for it one bit.
