As the 2008 nostalgia train continues, so do the Cure. Robert & friends have been playing live shows and releasing monthly singles, all in anticipation of the 9/13 release of album the 13th. As far as the singles go, “The Only One” was poppy, lovey, not offensive and “Freakshow” just kinda was. We haven’t heard a recorded version of “A Perfect Boy.” Same goes for new concert opener, “Underneath The Stars,” which is my favorite of the new material: A cascading, spacious, classic-sounding six-minutes-and-change slow builder that would’ve made sense, at least texturally, on EW-approved Disintegration.

Good call on the blue lighting. They’ve been playing “Underneath” live for the last month or so, but this is the best recording so far. I’m curious to hear the studio take, which I haven’t said that about a Cure song in a long while.

The song is ok… I’ve been a huge Cure fan for most of my life but I can’t help but look at the new records with diminishing hope. Is it just me or have all the bands that have ripped them off done better at being the Cure (M83, Mary Onettes, even Modest Mouse at moments) than the Cure?

This song was great live, but Jason Cooper needs to lay off the toms. I miss Boris Williams.

ALL the new songs sound amazing in their way, this one being the icing on the cake. I can’t imagine why the reviewer didn’t like the punky, poppy Freakshow. O why people feel the need to bash Robert’s look. So fucking what?

  8. Beautiful. I think this may have actually restored my faith in the Cure.

Absolutely gorgeous song (wished the ending was a bit better though). Still, it’s the best I’ve heard from The Cure since the “Wish” era (“Burn” from The Crow soundtrack aside). I honestly didn’t know they had this type of song in them anymore. Now I know. And yes, my ever wavering faith in The Cure is now restored as well.

I must say that Boris Williams is better than Jason Cooper
