The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2005 inductees.

  • U2
  • The Pretenders
  • Buddy Guy
  • The O’Jays
  • Percy Sledge

The ceremony is 3/12/05 in NYC. I know you’re totally sick of U2, but…

It’s an early version of the song “Fast Cars,” which appears on the non-U.S. version of Atomic Bomb.

Good article in this months’ Spin in which Chuck Klosterman tries to figure out if Bono is full of shit.

    1. Start the death watch NOW for Bono, since someone usually dies before being inducted into the Hall of Fame. or maybe it will be the Edge…Naomi Campbell’s fingerprints would be all over it.

      What about Sabbath!?
I wonder if Ms. Hynde will show, she’s pretty much said in interview she doesn’t get the whole Rock Hall of Fame concept and I have to agree with her.
To me it seems as if its the same people who vote on the grammies that vote on the RHOF…the clueless!

    3. By clueless, you mean that these five artists don’t belong in the Hall of Fame? Because they all surely do. I agree that overlooking Sabbath for so long is ridiculous, but their time will come.

    4. You’re right, I am totally sick of U2.

    5. BeavisOnCrack  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

I am so happy they are inducting Buddy Guy!

    6. Grimmone  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

By clueless I mean overlooking the Sex Pistols, Sabath, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash, ALice Cooper etc all.

I’ve read interviews with Ozzy were he was asked what he thinks about not being inducted and he pretty much said that he could care less but he thinks it would be a nice honor for his kids.

I’m sure that John Lydon could care less about
      being inducted as well.

I agree that the Pretenders should be in there as well as U2.

I could be wrong about Alice Cooper, does anyone know if he is in there? If not he belongs in there.

    7. Grimmone  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

Two more artists and bands that the Hall has overlooked The New York Dolls and Iggy and the Stooges.

Add to my post glad that Buddy Guy is going in this year.

    9. I mean, I have nothing against the O’Jay’s and Percy Sledge, but really…do they need to be inducted? It seems like the larger purpose of the RnR HoF is to include every artist who ever had a #1 record…I mean, if everyone (except the Sex Pistols, Grandmaster Flash, Ozzy etc…) is in the Hall of Fame, like…who cares? And you know, that building isn’t that big…they’re gonna run out of room.

Ultimately I’m not that concerned as Elvis Costello and the Clash are included. But I am looking forward to Kelly Clarkson’s induction in 23 years.

    10. Grimmone  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

      Sorry to post twice before.

I just don’t get the purpose of the Rock Hall. My theory on how it started was a group of high powered lawyers were sitting around discussing music much like they would sports and one said Okay if you can have a rock and roll hall of fame who would be in it. And then another said Oh what a great idea let’s do it for real.

I can see having museums dedicated to preserving musical history and all but to be inducted like a sports hall of fame seems so silly to me.

I’m sure Kelly Clarkson will be in before the Sex Pistols! Hey if the Sex Pistols do get inducted I would love to hear John Lydon’s induction speech!

    11. janine  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

Another vote for sick of U2. I think they’re a good band whose longevity has convinced people that they’re a great band. Isn’t it strange, especially when you campare them to the Pixies, that there aren’t many bands influenced by them? Jen, that’s why Percy Sledge does belong there. He had a lot of influence on early rock and soul/R&B. That said, the idea of preserving rock is perverse.

    12. Yeah  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

Seeing “Good article” in the same sentence as “Spin” makes me chuckle.

    13. Areyoukidding?  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

People still read “Spin”? That magazine hasn’t been relevent since 1993…give me a break.

    14. monkeysee  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

      i just chuckled too.
when i read someone post that there aren’t many bands influenced by U2.
      huh?
coldplay, radiohead, the killers…..these are just a few who ADMIT it.
U2 are a great band whose ongoing popularity somehow convinces elitists that they aren’t.
you don’t have to be dead to be great.

    15. Why would Naomi Campbell kill the Edge? She was engaged to Adam Clayton, so if she was to take anyone down, it would be him.

If we need a death watch, how about Chrissie Hynde? I wouldn’t miss her much.

    16. Grimmone  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

I wonder if Tom Yorke or Chris Martin will induct U2. My money says it will be Martin who will be inducting the band.

Watch Ashlee Simpson will induct the Pretenders. I can just hear Daddy Simpson making the call to the rock hall people, You’ve got to let my Ashlee induct the Prentenders she’s this generation’s anwser to Chrissie!

I think it will be Elvis Costello whom inducts the Pretenders.

Jason, I think Chrissie looks great. Granted she is annoying with the whole animal rights thing, but none the less I think she looks great.

    17. mama  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

chris martin is a good bet. i’m thinking it may be more than one artist. i could see michael stipe up there as well.
or you know, bono could just induct himself. :)

    18. vanhalenrocks  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

they still keep overlooking van halen and that is unfair. they are nothing short of spectacular. and seeing diamond dave back with them onstage would be excellent!

    19. maribel  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

anyone who thinks u2 doesn’t deserve this is either (a) an elitist a$$hole, (b) just plain crazy or (c) both. just my two cents, sorry.

    20. Grimmone  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

Agreed with Van Halen being in there and in terms of non musical influences is Rodney Bingenhimer in the hall yet? We can add him to the list of people who have been overlooked by the rock hall.

Van Halen rocks, supposedly Diamond Dave is living in my hood in New York traing to be come an EMT. I think if VH was inducted and Diamond Dave was there he’d find some way to piss off the Van Halen brothers!

    21. Janine  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

you prove my point, the pixies influence an entire genre. U2, three bands (if you insist on counting the killers).

I loved U2 once. They’re becoming the Robin Williams/Tom Hanks of rock.

btw, I think a Roll and Roll hall of fame, let alone a musuem, is a silly idea.

    22. Grimmone  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

Janine, I’ve got to agree with you that U2 has totally sold out, but I have to say that the new album totally rocks. I think that its their best since Actung Baby.

I can see having a museum that encompases all forms of music i.e. classical, jazz, pop, rock etc to perserve the music for future generations and I can see the museum doing things sponsering music programs and such. But to me the whole concept of the Rock and Roll hall of fame is just so stupid. The whole concept of inducting someone its so silly to me.

    23. Haha  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

U2 sold out? Please. Can we retire that useless and meaningless term now? Guess what? Any band that has ever signed to a label or made a video or has more than 1000 fans has ‘sold out’. God, grow the fuck up and let go of this stupid notion that bands can somehow ‘sell out’ in this day and age.

    24. Kami  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2004

Seriously. When you’ve been around for 25 years, the term ‘selling out’ seems a bit ridiculous. I hear the Beatles sold out after “The White Album”.

      /duh

    25. Brendan  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2004

      Kami, good point there.

    26. peter  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2004

I have to admit I’ll never understand the appeal of U2, so I guess I must be an elitist a$$hole. A modestly talented rhythm section, a guitarist with one tenth the ability of Jonny Greenwood and a singer with such bad poetry and vocal histrionics that it would shame Jim Morrison. Regardless of the reviews of the band, (which are never less than kind unless they’ve done an ‘ironic disco’ album) any magazine article on them is an unfathomable exercise in sycophancy on the part of the ‘journalist’. Someone, please explain.

    27. Janine  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2004

I never said they sold out. I wouldn’t; I love pop. The Tom Hanks comparison was to say they’re getting boring and predictable. Think: Patch Adams for the ears. Maybe it’s because their critics and fans get the howling fantods whenever they try something new. I admired Zooropa for that very reason. That album was ballsy.

    28. monkeysee  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2004

      talk about boring and predictable.
the anti-u2 crowd are themselves the collective tom hanks of stereogum.
      highlighting even 2 bands–coldplay and radiohead–influenced by u2 was making a point–these 2 are of MANY.
obviously the pixies are crazy influential–yes they influence an entire genre.
but u2′s influence spans across genres.
their influence comes from more than just the music.

    29. lalala  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2004

how to dismantle an atomic bomb – yay. vertigo – boo. rocknroll hall of fame for u2 – yay. no rocknroll hall of fame for tom waits (yet) – booooooo. :(

    30. janine  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2004

I don’t hate U2, even. I never said that. I even own some. I just don’t think they’re that insanely important, okay? I think the stuff in Africa’s great, I like that Bono likes the Scissor Sisters. They’re fine really. Off the top of my head, I can think of 10 more influential individuals and bands. Ready? Bowie, Beatles, Stones, Michael Jackson, Prince, Led Zepplin, Kraftwerk, Nick Drake, Rick Rubin. Did I make 10? Ah I don’t care.

    31. jenny  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2004

How many people have even heard of Kraftwerk or Nick Drake much less heard a song from them? Let’s face it, part of what gets you inducted is how popular you are and what kind of success you’ve had.

As for U2, they have indeed influenced many genres. Unlike alot of other bands [including the Pixies], their albums have been much more diverse from Pop to Rock to Punk-influenced to Eurotrash to Dance. So they only play three chords most times, so what? The Clash only played three chords, The Ramones only played three chords. It’s not how many chords you play — it’s what you do with them.

    32. it’s still hip to hate U2? no way! boring. yes, Bono pushes the limits of even the most devoted fan’s patience, but U2 are an immensely influential band inspite of this. and if you don’t want to admit it today, i’ll drag up this message board in ten years time and see who’s laughing.

    33. snoosnoo  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2004

      Dear U2,
Congratulations on all the popularity and everything, but could you maybe write a song that doesn’t sound the same as every other song you’ve ever recorded? It kinda got boring 15 years ago.

    34. Grimmone  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2004

In thinking about it if you are going to be a rock star do it the Bono way!

    35. Paul MACK  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2004

How in the hell can the Pretenders be inducted
into the “hall of shame” and Lynyrd Skynyrd be
      passed over. IT’S A JOKE

    36. Did someone say, “there aren’t many bands influenced by U2″?
Um, hello: Radiohead, Coldplay, Jeff Buckley, almost every ethereal rock band out now (Keane, Starsailor, Travis, Switchfoot), am i leaving anyone out, oh yes, possibly the Pixies themselves (listen to some very early U2), there are so many badns, every gutarist in any band worth istening to in the last 10-15 years has tried in some way to emulate the Edge.

    37. Will  |   Posted on Jan 9th, 2005

Edge 3 chords my arse, Edge is one of the most influential ( and best ) guitarists of the past 20 years, they’ve been influential on many bands
and singers across every genre and basically their song book possible one of the most impressive in music history is reason enough to induct them………..
