The purest year-end music list would be a playcount of the tunes you listened to most, and not the carefully sculpted, self-consciously eclectic 1-10s we end up reading. We know you’re as sick as we are of parsing critics’ picks, so here’s at least one countdown where you won’t find Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, or Dirty Projectors in the Top 10. That’s because the following fifty songs are ranked via the number of times someone clicked and downloaded them from our servers, and nothing else. It’s a list that finds Julian Plenti feeling pretty good about himself. Same goes for Rain Machine, Asobi Seksu, Handsome Furs, and our CMJ lineup. Of course, only you can tell us how many times you actually played the tunes after they left our nest.

What – no Dirty Projies? :(
“Stillness” was free for only a few days, behind an e-mail signup requirement
http://dominorecordco.us/usa/news/09-04-09/dirty-projectors–free-track/
So we didn’t host it.
Meanwhile “Cheerleader” came in at #95. I guess people already had downloaded the leak already?

Or maybe it’s because Grizzly Bear sucks?
Wow glad to see Now We Can See was so high!
A little end of summer postcard from Radiohead…I like stuff like that…Still get butterflies…
I’m hoping that they’ll release more this year…and soon.
Thom Yorke’s doing the soundtrack for the Tibet movie/documentary with Damien Rice, but I would like something from the full band.
Aside from Phoenix, THAT is a good list for 2009. goodnight everybody.
Last time I post on da gum until the next decade
GO GO Golden Filter! Not only is that track badass, but everything they touch turns out the same. Glad to see classy dance music among Monsters of Fuck and Radiohead playing the same song over and over forever.
dirty projectors suck beyond words
You should start a band and prove to all of us that your band is better than the Dirty Projectors
oh snap?
Im surprised “Call it a Ritual” by Wolf Parade wasn’t downloaded more….Unless that was late last year?
Wolf Parade’s At Mount Zoomer was last year. I still listen to on a regular basis anyways.
Good list and good representation that came and might be gone by next year.
I can only conclude the number of times an mp3 was downloaded had a lot to do how fast it was posted on SG before it was available for download anywhere else. Interesting list though…most people here enjoy the sounds of Phoenix more than they care to admit, hee-hee!
My last post of 00s!!
See y’all bitches next year.
Happy New Years everybody!!! May the new decade bring us only good music… I hope…
The playcounter doesn’t lie…(unless the listener can’t sit still for a whole entire song)…Taste-38,In the Flowers-37,Cannibal Resource-35…More people should learn how to listen to music and play the drums right…
Yay Radiohead! Please release something for the new year. Even a 3 minute song would be enough…
sure guys, we can wait until monday for a soundgarden reuniting post
Soundgarden reunited once before…

Was I the only one who liked ‘Change of Heart’? :C
Oh no you were not!!! It was one of the best songs of 2009 in my opinion!
Change of Heart is in my list. :-D
cheerleader was available on dozens of other sites. the songs that did best were exclusives to Stereogum…Rain Machine?
Interesting list. I haven’t heard a lot of these yet, actually. I need to get busy.
I dig “These Are My Twisted Words” a lot… can’t wait for a new Radiohead album (in 2010.. right?)
ooooo interesting…
sorry to plug shamelessly, but this seems like a pretty appropriate place to ask people who download discriminately to please do my survey for my dissertation which is about the internet and music: http://www.somequestions.co.uk
it’s not boring and quite fun and you can vent opinions and it all goes to a good cause, trust me.
ethical plug. over. xx

is there a single download link for all 50 songs? clicking thru all the webpages is a bit much.
Amen Bob, I’m looking for that same thing.
What happened to Laura Viers and Shannon Stephens? Those two must havebeen in the top 50 downloads.
Whah. It’s so much work to download all this free awesome music.
Whah. I hate (secretly love) Phoenix. Dance your lame ass off — Phoenix rules!
