It takes a special man to pull off head-to-toe leather. Which, as it turns out, is a different sort of man than the one who can pull off the dice roll. Julian made late-night amends for that awkward Conan appearance over break by joining Fallon & Sanz on “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” over break, and he he kept some of that swagger on last night’s Letterman show with “Out Of The Blue.” New York suits him; maybe he’ll move back soon. Until then, there’s some shows at Terminal 5 next week, and this embed:

Phrazes For The Young is out. In case you missed it over the holidays, “11th Dimension” got itself a video.

The tour:
01/08 – Boston, MA @ Paradise
01/10 – Philadelphia, PA @ Trocadero
01/12 – Washington, D.C. @ 9?30 Club
01/14 – New York, NY @ Terminal 5
01/15 – New York, NY @ Terminal 5

Anyone notice how odd his hand gestures are? He seems to be giving the Fonzie Thumbs up for half the song and then making hand gestures completely unrelated to the lyrics for the rest of the song.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan and saw him last year during his LA residency but there was something off during this performance.

I don’t know about you guys, but i enjoy watching his Sick Six… love the drummer+percussionist duo..

btw, anyone know what kind of guitar is the guy on the left playing(not the one with the ponytail+beard)? reminds me of the little guitar that marty played that blew up doc brown’s amplifier in the opening scene of Back to the Future (part 1)

  3. that 3 part guitar harmony is pretty cool live. And that guitarist with the tele has to be someone’s goofy dad.

    • Are you talking about J.P. Bowersock? If you own “Is This It?”…there is a picture of him in the liner notes. Also, he was a huge part of Ryan Adams’ “Jacksonville City Nights” and “Cold Roses”.

  5. it’s the guru! no one else recognizes him from the inside sleeve of is this it??
that man taught the strokes everything they know (on guitar at least)

i love them mix of band members. Half of them look like they just hopped off their harley, while the other half look like they just got off from their corporate job.

am i the only one who absolutely hates julian casablancas’ solo album? i personally think its cheesy garbage. probably the biggest let down of 2009 for me.

is it just me, or did he rip off the first lines of this song from Yoda?

  11. holy high hat action! i heard this on the CD and pressed Next before the chorus. I don’t mind it so much now after seeing this vid.

the chorus is pretty epic. caught me off guard too

  13. Really good performance. Better than what I expected.

  14. It’s the guru! haha, he’s alive, and they didn’t get rid of him!

  15. The instrumental side of things sounded really awesome. I have mixed feelings about the album but I’ll bet it’s great live. And I must admit, I kind of cringed when I read “head to toe leather,” but… Julian looks pretty damn good in leather pants.

  16. i miss the strokes.

Love this album. So many great big catchy choruses like this one. I wonder if he’s ever doing a proper tour?

    leather basket. wat

  19. I think he may have been signaling the sound guys. That’s just what it looked like during one of the thumbs up.

  20. very much enjoyed the video he put on a great performance digging the dual percussion

  21. There are so many performers that end up on high profile Late Night Television, namely Letterman who actually struggle singing. His pitch was right on that night. He might not be the most exciting performer, but the man sounds great.

  22. So many of the musical guests that land high profile late night television spots, especially on Letterman, struggle to sing. His pitch was right on that night. He might not be the most exciting performer, but the man sounded great.

    hear, hear!

  24. I am retardedly in love with this man. He can do no wrong in my eyes.
