The melancholic twee minimalists of best new act the xx perfectly set the stage for the intimate, icy teen love depicted in this Marcus Söderlund-directed video for “VCR.” The romantically downcast protagonists scribble secret messages on walls then kick their feet through said walls, pine, make out, set fires. The latter act turns a previously black and white world into some sort of colorful office-building jungle (complete with tiny monkey). While they sleep it off.
You’d want a different video for the Matthew Dear remix of the song:
xx is out via Young Turks. Remember Nosaj Thing recently tweaked “Islands.”

Nice still…so who is this eras Shelly Duval anyway? It seems like thats half the problem…
On multiple levels, I do not understand the appeal of this band or video. Stop whispering all the time!
there is nothing wrong about it! it happens to all the soulless people!
love it love it love it.
Read this article by Sasha frere jones. Her main statement is that the xx make “Songs to be sung inches from someone?s ear.” The sparseness and intimacy are the brilliance of it.

threw?
the xx is quality
Seems so cheesy, especially the vocal delivery and corny romance story video. Why is everyone thinking this is so edgy?
Who said it was edgy? are we watching the same video?
Have to agree. I really like the Florence cover/remix thing, but this and the album, well, what he said.
The CD is amazing! If you haven’t heard it check it out even if its not cool to catch it after everybody else. Who cares what’s cool or not? As far as I’m concerned it’s solid. Beautiful minmalism. And the blogs (and pitchfork) point to good music much of the time. See also- Animal Collective, The Antlers, Burial, etc.
Who cares if its edgy or not.
Thanks, tips.
The thing I don’t get about the XX is why they did this version of VCR when their demo is so much better http://bit.ly/800VfP
Sounds as if the xx and Glas Vegas were jammin’ in studios next to each other, broke down the wall between them in the style of Aerosmith vs Run DMC, and started fighting. The xx then succesfullly kill the drummer and singer of Glas Vegas, leaving the remaining survivors and the xx standing victorious with a beautiful, mellow tune.
matthew dear remix is smooth as fuck.
god-god…i like it,
