Who in the blue hell in ABC decided to book Ashlee? I know NBC is their competitor, but c’mon. Didn’t they see her last performance on SNL? Or even at the last major music awards? The anarchy symbol is on stage the whole time, but Ashlee is the only one who used that drum set. Kelly Clarkson’s drummer was using a totally different set of drums, while the Anarchy drums sit unused on stage. The anarchy drums were there for Ashlee’s preformance ONLY.

Boy, am I with you on that one… Ashley Simpson’s complete talentless-ness was only *part* of the problem (a big part, to be sure); the whole halftime show basically sucked because the sound crew fell down on their jobs, badly. (Maybe the sound guys were Oklahoma fans, and were too depressed by the Sooners lackluster showing in the first half to pay attention to what they were doing?
) Granted, during a live show *anything* can go wrong, but JEEZ… I haven’t heard a mix job that bad since the Cheap Trick concert I attended back in ’77. 
No excuses for poor sound will suffice.
She and 90% of the cosmetically combined, philisophically devoid, and commercially propelled artists that are stuffed into radio rotations, MTV/VH-1 eyecandy shows, and offered at .99 a track online will have to pay me before I will listen..

Wow, I just finally saw the Orange Bowl clip and it was quite hilarious–the singing actually wasn’t too bad at first (except for the incredible offness of the backup vocals) but progressively (quickly) got worse. Seriously, what is with the pelvic thrusing? Sick! What the h*ll is she doing?!? Did Papa Simpson suggest those moves? Whatever, my opinion of Ashlee was reinforce but I do have more respect now for Kelly Clarkson…at least she can actually somewhat sing.
As for the SNL un-perfomance, whoever the guys in the band are, at least they can actually play…though I do feel sorry for them. What an unfortunate incident that was (boo hoo!!!)
Anyway, just can’t WAIT for the new season of her show (barf). Strategically aired immediately after “Newlyweds,” the Simpsons are obviously only feeding off Jessica’s (and Newlyweds’)success and hoping to pull something off with this joke of a show. One thing, though, I don’t know why people are surprised now that she can’t sing, she couldn’t sing all throughout her show either! I’ve seen a few ads for the upcoming season of Newlyweds on MTV, but none promoting Ashlee’s new season; I heard there was a new season by accident in a tiny 2-second blurb somewhere, don’t even remember where…I wonder why they’re not promoting it, with these horrendous performances under her belt…they’re probably just giving people time to get over this and hope they’ll watch her show and give her another chance by the time it airs on the 26th. People will be *sure* to watch it since they’ll already be sucked into MTV with Newlyweds, right…
I’ll admit, I do love Newlyweds and it is VERY addicting, Jessica does act ditzy and dumb but I feel that she actually is a talented singer. She must be embarrassed by her sister, trying to pull off this act. Or she just feels really bad for her. I am both mad and appalled that Ashlee’s CD debuted at #1 surpassing Jessica’s–not that i’ve listened to either CD but that just goes to show that it doesn’t matter how much talent “artists” have these days, only how they’re marketed and how much money is put behind them. I could go on about all this forever but i won’t because many of you have already raised all the points I completely agree with (the music industry is whack these days, etc. etc.) and i’m just so glad that there are people out there that refuse to accept these mockeries as “music” or “art” and that people are constantly being fed this garbage and millions are unfortunatly embracing it. I especially liked the post about parents who buy their kids this stuff and what they are essentially feeding their kids (Ashlee’s empty persona, isn’t really what she acts like/tries to be). It’s totally true.

311 has been one of my favorite bands for a few years now, and though they have received attention from MTV and some popular radio airplay, they haven’t sold out and really are amazing musicians. If you can get by their hits like “down” and the recent “love song” remake, and really listen to their albums, hopefully you’ll see…if not, its your opinion, but i would suggest giving them a chance!

After reading through ALL the above, I have to admit that I feel some sadness for poor Ashlee. It was a terrible show, but it would have been lame even if everything went well. The travesty is in the packaging, as y’all have said.
Ashlee needs to get a life of her own. If her dad is selling her, it will only lead to tragedy for her: a fraudulent life being something she isn’t. What she is or should or wants to be, only she can say.
As for punk – that was punk-lite. Kind of funny, and a clever marketing ploy again, making something rebellious into something safe. Hope everyone wakes up a little from this experience.

I don’t feel the least bit bad for Ashlee, she’s been bringing this shit on herself, but I do feel bad for the hundreds of other people who were part of that halftime show. Even though they probably knew that Ashlee was the target of the crowd’s anger, they just finished probably the biggest performance of their dance/cheer/drillteam career and had to listen to booing rather than cheering. For that reason and that reason alone I think the crowd was out of line.

Well today on MTV.com they have an article in which she discusses the reasons she believes she got booed. First she said that if we dident like it, oh well that is our problem. hahaha Secondly she blamed us Sooner fans. She said that it was probably “those people” that booed her because she was there cheering for USC, and they showed a clip of it on the bigscreen before her performance, so it must of been only the Sooner fans booing her. And last but not least, she blamed the sound and stage production, saying she couldent hear…and blah blah blah. She is just full of excuses.

I love both Ashlee and Britney Spears. Brit has worked her ass off all her life. Sure she lip synchs her concerts, but noone could walk away from one and say she can’t do a good concert and walk away saying that girl has talent. She is beautiful, hot, sexy, talented. Has anyone seen the The Greatest Hits DVD of hers that has all her videos on it. Well in the special features it has britney singing I’am a Slave For You. That is a hard song to sing. And she is singing it without music and live on DVD. And she was damn good.
As for Ashlee Simpson. She may be coached my daddy too much and may not know much punk. But we all have different views and talents. She has tried desperatly to set standards for herself. It took guts finishing the song after being booed not once but also on SNL. Grant ya she dont have her sisters voice or looks. But she gives us something. I would have never wished any of this on Ashlee – I think she’s cute, and for what her record is – synthisized vocals – it’s catchy/likable, or at least the couple of songs I’ve heard on MTV are >:) – can only report on what’s been on video/radio. You just have to fucking know what you’re buying.
It’s the consumer’s responsibility to learn and understand the product they’re paying for – if you buy iron pyrite just because someone told you it was gold, that’s your own damn problem. If you accept something as true simply because it’s repeated enough times, I have no sympathies. Many people are mentally lazy these days, and like to be spoonfed – i.e., “marketed to” – if that’s you, then you deserve what you get.

I also have no beef with Britney – she’s pretty and can dance and she’s synthed – nor with the other round-up of suspects: Hillary, Lindsay… whomever. I like some of their music more than others, and sometimes, the lyrics are absolute crap – hell – many critically acclaimed musicians only have 3 or 4 good songs on their CD’s, and the rest of the tracks are underperformers – rare anymore is a whole CD worth purchasing – but I give these girls credit for trying to brand themselves out of their original genre. And maybe Ashlee never would have gotten any kind of work had it not been for her sister’s career – ditto for the other siblings of the famous – but there have been times in my life when I could have used a nice shot of nepotism, too >:) I think you’ve just got to laugh at this shit

Well then she needs to step up to the plate and carve out her own identity, if she wishes to be a true artist… What is more offensive than that anarchy symbol (frankly it doesent offend me) is the fact that this chic is a 20 yearold WOMAN, thats right she IS an adult, and she is letting a man (although he is her father mind you) shape her into what HE sees appropriate, instead of taking matters into her own hands and showing people who she is as artist and how she wants to be represented in public… That is offensive to all women… Dont get me wrong, im the farthest thing from a feminist, but my little niece buys her music and watches her videos, and I just dont think that the message she is sending to those little girls like my niece is a healthy one… Maybe she still needs her father, hell we all do no matter how old we are, but there is other ways she can allow him to support her, without letting him sketch out her image and artistic goals… I still wouldent buy her music, but atleast I would respect her as an artist… I mean in alot of interviews she has done, she goes on and on about how much more “independent” she is than her sister, but you dont get that message at all in her public appearances/performances, or from her show. She just comes off looking like a liar… Pimping out your day to day life to MTV, really doesent help either… You are kind of just asking for public scrutiny as far as that goes… You dont see Joss Stone on MTV throwing temper tantrums because her mom has got her lost in traffic on the way to her next gig… Sure maybe Joss’ mother has gotten her lost on the way to an important gig, and maybe she too even through a childish temper tantrum, but you dont see artist like Joss putting that shit on TV for the world to see… Ashlee is totally over expsoing herself with that show, and it dilutes peoples opinions of her music, just because they might not have liked what they saw on that show… I think that was a huge mistake, and also for her sister and Nick… I think they will all live to regeret that… Less is more, and we need to see less of her life and more of her music, and maybe that would help her out alot more… People need mystery… Her interviews about her “independence” totally conridicts what see on that show… On her show you see her daddy making ALL of the decisions, which mostly she should be making, if she is going to tell every interviewer that she is miss independent. Nobody likes a fibber, and 50% of the people who spend their hard earned money buying music, will not buy an almum if they hate the artist as a person. The less you put out there about yourself as a person, the better chances you have at getting people to pay more attention to your music, if that is really what you are in it for… I personally do not think Ashlee is in it for the music… I think she is just in it for the sake of being a “celebrity” and celebrites make shitty records, artist make beautiful music… Soon she will have movies, clothing lines, books and restaurants… That is not an artist that is a business person, and business people also make shitty records…

I was at the Orange Bowl, and she was facing the USC side of the stadium (the home/south side). Of course, only 25% of the crowd consisted of USC fans, but she claims that she was facing the OU side (not true at all). Ashpee was using her actual voice, no lip-syncing, and it hurt my ears it was so incredibly loud. It also hurt my ears because she has no talent, she is a by-product of her sister, and teenies are buying it. We need a Congressional hearing to decide whether or not she should be stripped of her citizenship, and forced to live in Texas! Ashpee sucks!

We can draw parallels with Ashlee to an early Janet Jackson’s career! I bet a whole lot of people don’t remember her first album – or maybe even her first two! – not sure if “Control” was her actual second or third (I mostly know of the first efforts from “Behind the Music” >:) But I know it was a bunch of “bubble-gum” Pop, that did not go over very well with the people – her dad was her manager at the time – I’m pretty sure he had a lot of control of the situation >:)
But then she broke free! Got married, then annulled, flew to Jimmy Jam and Terry, wrote a lot of “Control,” the album, and became a Nasty Girl! Re-defining herself! Out from under her father’s thumb – it just seems that this may happen in a reverse order for Ashlee.
Janet was from a talented family (- small aside! Mayhap LaToya got her record deals from trading on her name, if we want to draw further parallels to the Jacksons and the Simpsons! (Oh! they’ve both got “son” in their last names! God, I’m good! Hee hee hee >:) – and her first album(s?) were certainly paid some attention to, because people knew the last name, and were probably interested in what she might/could do. But those early efforts did not do much on the music scene, so little damage done – she ended up forging ahead and positioning/defining herself as she felt she really was inside (I’m assuming that), and thus we had “Control”!
Ashlee’s unfortunate (potential) reversal: Her “controlling” dad pushed(?) to define her as she seems to really be not: (and in this world, the question is not only “to be, or not to be” – you HAVE to be what you say you are, or the Authenticity Police will rightfully indict you (no, that would be the Authenticity D.A. >:) and if found guilty, your sentence may spell the death of your career… (flames! flames!!!) >:)
She may have some elements of “rebel” in her, and all that jazz, or even truly be one! You can be a bad girl and not have to have lead a coup d’etat or revolution to do it…
but Ashlee doesn’t strike me (I could be wrong!) as the type of 19-20 year old (again, I assume she hasn’t been to college, and/or just has an intense love for searching, and knowledge, and learning) who knows a lot about the world: about history, sociology… about origins: those who potentially influenced her type of music (or influenced those who wrote her lyrics/songs) – the history of it -since she’s not being branded as straight “Pop” (there are no credibility issues when you’re just going with “Pop”!), but “Alt.Pop?” “Alt.Rock.Pop?” – no “Pop” at all? (God, forgive me for my sarcasm… >:) I like her music – I’ve been “La-la-ing” all day long >:) …
And you don’t have to know it ALL – I’m going to hopefully not (generalize) her, but I would guess that Avril Lavigne (so young,) doesn’t know “it” (the history, movements…) all, but she’s also not rocking the “anarchy” symbol: on the red carpets/interviews I’ve seen her on, she’s seemed to have real attitude, been angry, and bitchy – it seems that’s who she is, and it’s a perfect fit for what she does. It all comes down to credibility once you’ve caught the audience’s attention, and if you can’t back that shit up, it gets ugly!!!!
If you’re going with “anarchy” as your definition, you have to deal with the people’s perceived connotations/view of that word, and you’ve GOT to have the education to back that shit up, when people start digging past the surface on you. I don’t remember who said it, but it’s fairly appropriate here: “You can fool some of the people some of the time…” blah blah blah, etc
Ashlee wasn’t (lucky?) like Janet to have had a sleeper record or two her first time out – Janet got to re-define/position herself with “Control” – - I bet it’s rare for people to throw her first efforts up at her. (Also, there is Alanis Morissette! Her first few albums, in Canada, were STRAIGHT BUBBLEGUM POP – and sold well there – she was a star with many “Juno” awards – she became “Rock” with “Jagged Little Pill” – the album that took off for her in America, so she got to kind of sweep under the rug that “authenticity” question – it’s almost a “secret past” for her – kind of like Janet’s was.
But “Team Simpson” marketed the hell out of Ashlee – got her to number one with her very first effort, and the record (what I’ve heard, to me!) sounds good, even if the live vocals are ever dodgy >:) But I feel some things were inauthentically appropriated! And that’s where the shit rolls down – at credibility. It seems she was defined by her father (I guess I keep trying to blame him, and not her, because he IS old enough to have known better, but a lot of people know that some Americans will accept WHATEVER you tell them as truth, and they’ll run far with it – he believed, I think, that there were a bunch of suckers out there, and why would they question the message? – or anything else – figured it could be gotten away with, and probably could have, had it not been for Saturday Night Live. I truly believe it’s more “business” with that crew – maybe they didn’t care about what “could” happen to her while imagining all the money rolling in – but I also have to avoid painting her as some victim – as Sara’s post said, she is a woman in years: at some point you’ve got to be accountable to self, but we usually do get better and learn better, to make better choices as we grow up… ) – I think they just went way too far trying to position her as “Jess-alternate”: “if you don’t like Jess you can like Ashlee!” – but now, the music business seems to be more about business than about music, and some of them are just looking for suckers, marketing to the lowest common denomination, because there’s perhaps a lot of them, and they won’t do too much thinking, and for the “industry” types, that’s like keys to Fort Knox.
(Here is my own personal peeve/parallel aside >:) – it’s kind of like the brand name label clothes/garment industry: I personally love quality clothes – but wouldn’t be caught dead in something with an obvious label. People sporting all those giant Louis Vuitton purses… Chanel “double C’s” shoes… – you’re marketing for those companies!!! That’s free advertising for them! I don’t get it – it doesn’t seem authentic to me, unless you just want to say “I can afford this!/I’m in the club, too!” – it is a slight judgment, and I try not to judge! But people are entitled to like what they like. I think those obvious clothing labels so apply to Ashlee’s situation – like they put on her “Here! We’ve labeled her for you, made it easy to understand the message – just go forth and love it! (Ask no questions)” – just like those clothes: “Here! We’ve labeled these clothes for you – made it easy to understand for others that you’re a part of the club, and they’ll easily understand the message that you’re putting out (no thinking necessary here!) – go forth and be loved!” – it is possible that I apply here more thought than is actually required, but that is what they say to me

Gosh – I hope she sticks in there, but I think I’ve just convinced myself with all of this that it might be over – I didn’t want to do that – I wanted to be helpful! Sincerely. I was hoping to inspire perhaps a little cutting of some slack, and forgiveness in others. Whoops

I must admit I never heard the name Ashlee Simpson before, but this whole incident made so much noise that it even was mentioned in a German newspaper.
However, I don’t get it. I watched this socalled ‘halftime’ and simply cannot understand all the fuzz about it, nor the booing. Okay, she was a pain to bear, but so is everything that comes from MTV – where’s the difference? Why pick out one and blame her for being what she is? The guy who was croaking before her was equally atrocious.
There is some pondering that the true reason might be something not known down here, something particularly American. Maybe she criticized the Iraq war or was caught reading a book on Islam – or even worse, Russell’s ‘Why I am not a Christian’. There was something similiar years ago when an Irish pop singer criticized the pope on stage and Americans literally burned her CDs on the street. Quite funny, even though slightly frightening.
Yet after reading this whole site I could not find anything else but lack of talent. I could understand if she was trying to perform as Norma, but hell it was some MTV-style crap done for some football event. I don’t think anyone would except a Maria Callas there..
So in the end the whole thing pretty much reminds me of a sort of witch-hunt for fun. Somebody started it and all others follow, just for the fun of bashing someone. Seems that throwing stones is never getting out of fashion..

Now to the whole “punk” thing. Punk was a musical form in the 70′s/80′s. Punk is seeping back into the mainstream with “pop-punk” (pop=popular). It’s kind of an oxymoron to be popular and punk, but that’s the way the music is changing. Besides, most of you people pointing figures and saying “poser!” probably dress “punk” to fit the image, so you’re all guilty of it =P
