Last night was a toughie: watch The O.C. or go to that “secret” TVOTR show in Williamsburg. We settled for the former (Brooklyn is FAR) and invited our favorite bloggers over to witness Modest Mouse reach new levels of selloutdom (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Fortunately Mindy did go to the TVOTR show and shares with us photos and a review:

It was at the former Luxx, now Trash. Totally a homecoming show, with Kyp thanking neighborhood characters in between songs. Was sweet… as in endearing… not frat daddy code for hott…

Incidentally, our friend Elliot is currently working on TVOTR’s next video. You could watch the awesome clip he directed for “Staring At The Sun” here.

I wonder who’s playing next at the Bait Shop? Maybe Arcade Fire? Let’s start that rumor.

Yeah, that OC appearance pretty much guaranteed that from now on, MM shows will be laden with 17 year old girls in UGG boots and shrimpy little dudes in Letterman Jackets, all groping each other high school style. “Indie” is the new rap metal or teen pop, get used to it. Its just another passing trend on the mainstreams radar. They even started playing Arcade Fire on KROQ, as another nail in the coffin.

  2. I heard Seth Cohen is gonna start a blog…

  3. Take heart: The Walkmen didn’t experience the expected Rooney-esque post-O.C. jump in popularity among 17-year-old chicks in ugg boots.

Who cares if Modest Mouse becomes embraced by the mainstream if they continue to make good music? I mean, really, how many indie rockers set out on a career thinking, “I want to be broke most of my life and have my music heard by a small, elite number of people”? That Arcade Fire album is one of the best things that came out last year IMO and I would be elated if KROQ played that more than Velvet Revolver or Yellowcard or whatever that other crap is. I get so tired of hearing people slam good bands for tasting success after being around for a long time. C’mon, these people gotta eat too!

Modest Mouse is successful. Your band is not. Shut the fuck up.

robb, i guess you were also mad when “float on” became a huge radio hit over the summer and modest mouse received a buttload of well-deserved attention. if 17 year old girls with ugg boots start listening to modest mouse instead of shit like hoobastank, good for them. i don’t see why that would ever be a bad thing. nail in the coffin my ass, you bitter old fart.

no need to get catty and vindictive Mancat

  8. TVOTR are awesome. I saw them in Vancouver when they were supporting The Faint on their last tour. I wish I knew why the bassist stands with his back to the audience FOR THE WHOLE SHOW though. I have some pictures of them here (not as good though) for anyone who’s interested : http://misssaturnine.blogspot.com/2004/11/faint-with-tv-on-radiothe-commodore.html

next on the oc? hopefully the pixies? yeah, right. watching mm on the oc was really odd…but i did get a kick out of that chick at the going away party calling her mom a whore and her dad a something or other…great!

  10. I must admit, I enjoy my musical superiority.

Thus, it definitely offends me when I see that my favorite bands have become fodder for the 17 year old ugg wearing masses. Unfortunately, it’s the new thing. Indie is the new trend. It is now cool to try to steal my identity.
    What’s up with that?

And yes, although the OC is my favorite show (no insults please, it’s amazing) it does always depress me to see my bands on mass tv.

Yet, I do also know that I have to grow up and realize its OK if people like what I like… because I liked it first.

Oh, and P.S. Brooklyn is awesome you inner city fool. :)

  11. chill out and get over it. the writer of the show is like, what, 26? 27? he’s in the same boat we are and is just bringing what he’s been listening to to the masses. so sue him for being successful and liking what we do. losers.
ditto adam brody, who plays seth cohen. all reports having him basically being his character, and ad-libbing many lines. good for him.

re: tv on the radio – wrong decision, scott. tvotr is always more worthy than the o.c. (again, as much as i love adam brody…) but good posting on the pics.

if 17 year old ugg wearing cheerleaders want to go to a modest mouse show and have sex with me afterward, then so be it.

Does Elliot know you threw his name up there? I think he would be happy if I told him -

You know, the thing you can bank on with these fads is exactly that – they are fads. So when the 17yr olds go on to the ‘next thing’, we’ll still be enjoying our MM and the like. I’m all for good music (tastes being subjective) being popular if it somehow manages to destroy shitty bands like Hoobastinky or whatever. Besides, FM radio is over anyways…

if you are watching the o.c. you probably can relate to these 17 year olds. never watched that crap. never will. modest deserve much credit, for their most recent album was made for them, not us.

  16. If you all think that Indie is pre packaged and spoon fed to you like every other genre of music then you need to wise up. Indie, just like any other musical genre, comes down to money. Bands don’t get together and intend to starve while performing for a tiny group of people who think their musical taste is superior. Bands perform and write music intending to draw the largest audience possible. Being on an incredibly popular TV show is one way to do so. Reminds me of when Christina Aguilera was on 90210, she became huge after that. Indie isn’t the new pop, it is pop. It’s just in a newer wrapper, disguised to be less cheesy.

  20. I am a huge Modest Mouse fan
The good times are killing me.
I like the part about how he was in jail. I backed into a cop car the other day he just drove off sometimes lifes ok. I here Modest Mouse is from Houston or at least southerners like me,that is cool I can’t till the southern rock rises again like the 1970′s.
Oh yeah check out my whole web site it is full of good old fashioned art.

  22. Hallo!
