As promised, Animal Collective will be streaming their new album, Centipede Hz, in its entirety tonight on their weekly online radio show, following Geologist’s mix of songs that inspired the LP. We’ve already heard (and seen) “Today’s Supernatural” so it’s probably about time we figured out what the rest of this record’s deal is. Is it as weird as Deakin stated it would be? Only one way to find out — let us Prematurely Evaluate together below like a family. Head over to the streaming show to jump in on the broadcast and tell us what you think.
Here’s the tracklist so you know how to refer to the songs once it starts:
1. “Moonjock” – 5:04
2. “Today’s Supernatural” – 4:18
3. “Rosie Oh” – 2:57
4. “Applesauce” – 5:34
5. “Wide Eyed” – 5:00
6. “Father Time” – 4:35
7. “New Town Burnout” – 6:01
8. “Monkey Riches” – 6:46
9. “Mercury Man” – 4:18
10. “Pulleys” – 3:31
11. “Amanita” – 5:39
Centipede Hz is out 9/4 via Domino.
UPDATE: You can stream the album, track-by-track, at the band’s website now.

i would rant about how Geologist is under appreciated but I love how he’s not at all. he gets just as much attention
PULLEYE IS FANTASTIC ALREADY GOOD GOD SHIT’S GREAT
GOOD GOD’S SHIT
I just realized that I’m gonna be so sad that I wont be able to hear this for like another two weeks
But then after those two weeks you’ll never be sad ever again!
it is going to be available online in like 2 seconds
Yay! I’m back to being happy again
Famous last words! The entire album, track by track, is now available on their website:

The band was smart enough to know that one listen wouldn’t suffice.
OMG…that intro was insane!
so overjoyed. i love this so much
Almost done, Centipede Hz for album of the year…on a very early prediction
It would have an even better chance at aoty if Honeycomb had been on here. That track is at least on par with anything on here.
Want to say this album has a strawberry jam feel with the presence Avey has…but it’s really a different animal all together. Makes sense since no two of their albums are alike, and this is up there with anything else they’ve done, imho.
this is some kung-fu soundtrack groove right here.
i also saw them live. i can’t believe how well the previous songs transferred to recording. even the transitions, all of it has been seamless/flawless.

amanita is effing rediculous!
Go figure….Amanita is a genus of toxic mushrooms.
The “Ohs” in Amantia…damn
what a awesome closing track, is there an auto repeat button???
trying to collect my brains and jaw from the floor… truly an unreal experience listening to that in this setting people. a fantastic piece of work, cant wait to listen to this 100s of more times.
New Town Burnout, Applesauce and Wide Eyed were standouts for me. but who we are kidding, they were all fucking great.
…9.1?
transmission over
refresh for archive
great album.
Well this was fun everybody. Cheers.
Who says the album as an art form is dead? That was a fucking blast.
New Town Burnout. Best song of…ever?
New Town Burnout / Monkey Riches 2012
I can’t believe how strangely compelling this is! But what else would you expect from the kings of modern neo-psychadelia?
So glad I preordered the deluxe edition from Domino.
Awesome — they left the album stream up. Not that it isn’t already on every torrent site in existence.
I’m going to go ahead and listen to this 4 more times before I go to bed and wake up and listen to it all day tomorrow.
seems like the songs will be streamable in no time
When the SETI project finally hears a radio signal from aliens, I think it’ll sounds like this album.
between this album and The Seer, there’s going to be some fucking incredible music coming out the next two weeks.
Well done AC, you guys are one of a kind
I’m gonna bring back some stories and games.
Really gonna try to avoid any sort of kneejerk reaction to this album, but that was definitely a good first listen. That “In the back of our old car/Never going too far” moment on the first track is already one of my favorite choruses of the year, though.
Has anyone else realized that there are quite a few (expectedly) incredible albums coming out in the next couple of months by bands that are wildlife themed? i.e. Animal Collective (obviously), Cat Power, Grizzly Bear, Band of Horses, etc.

Fuck you. Band of horses are great. Go be more pretentious somewhere else.
swans, too
Fleet Foxes. Although this can’t be too amazing considering animals are second only to inanimate objects, or peoples’ names when it comes to naming a band
…Even though I don’t think Fleet Foxes have announced an album coming out in the coming months…?
Maybe so, Robin said he was working on one.
One can only hope.
I guess Dinosaur Jr. sort of counts too, even though the dinosaurs are extinct.
Deerhoof is another one
…and The Mountain Goats
Tame Impala too
Can’t forget Modest Mouse. I am often asked what some of my favorite bands are and my answer is usually along the lines of Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, and Wolf Parade and I fear that people not hip to these bands may think I’m some sort of deranged animal enthusiast or sheepfucker.
First impression: Might actually be my third favorite AnCo record. My top 5 now stands as MPP > Strawberry Jam > Centipede Hz > Feels > Sung Tongs. Really stellar LP, good job boys.
You should take time and listen to Danse Manatee bro.
What if I told you…one can listen to Danse Manatee and still not list it in one’s top 5?
God bless anticipation. God bless climax.
parrty
Some of the lyrics have changes since their 2011 tour, especially on “Mercury Man,” as if Avey got over his divorce… It’s still chill, just missing that raw emotion.
surprising like of hz puns. c’mon guys, i was counting on you for this.
If this song (the song that this website calls “Today’s Supernatural”) isn’t on the album… Then what the fuck is this??!!

There’s just the download, I think.
I wanna know as well
makes pet sounds sound like pigfart
makes sgt pepper sound like sgt ralph (i.e., VOMIT)
REDO: makes pet sounds sound like pet farts BOOM!!!!!!!!!! IM FUCKIN OUT.
I don’t really like it all that much but I’ll probably listen to it 20 times over.
Cool Jams 8)
Favorites so far are the two Panda Jams and Mercury Man (and every other section of Applesauce)
I’m so sad they took out slick shades cool bro emoticon.
RIP ” 8) “
B)
So who’s going to rip those tracks and upload them for me?
http://radio.myanimalhome.net/ check it man.
They must have played “Father Time” at P4K last summer, because it sounds familiar.
That’s how Animal Collective rolls:
They play songs from their upcoming albums live with older stuff mixed in.
They like to keep it as fresh as possible and “workshop” the songs while on tour.
yeah they gave all of their song titles different monikers to purposefully confuse during their workshopping
So it was….good?
Was it good for you?
Here’s Geologist telling how some of those transition sounds were made.
“…While mixing Centipede Hz, we were killing time at the studio by playing around with some synthesizer apps we just found, and it turned into a pretty long drone jam. I got hungry and wanted to tell the other guys we should get lunch, but I didn’t want to kill the vibe so while we were playing I quickly looked for a robot voice app that I could program to say ‘Who wants lunch?’ and started looping it until the other guys realized what it was saying. We ate shortly after, and later went on to use the same voice on the album and in the videos we’ve been releasing on our website.”
hey did anyone do a YouMix thing they were talking about?
I’m not listening to this right now. Hell, I’m not really even a fan of animal collective but all these comments are making me really excited and anxious to hear this album once it is released. MPP was somewhat enjoyable for me at times, and I liked campfire songs, so ill definitely give this one a shot.
it is so hot it is burning my brain apart. moonjock actually feels like big beast with the ridiculous chest pounding hits. the visuals are amazing! good lord, is this move of the year?

Don’t want to read the comments until I say this: This is the best mix of what I liked about Feels, Strawberry Jam, and MPP all rolled into one, yet, Animal Collective finds a way to bring even more to the table and make this a newer sound than all of those. Really really good.
Right now (tentatively, until I listen few more times) my list of AC faves goes 1. SJ 2.Centipede 3. Feels 4. MPP
WOW!!! Im simply in awe! Not dissappointed at all. They are truely masters at their craft. LONG LIVE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE!!! Cenetipede Hz is amazing
Is it just me or does it totally sound like they’re sampling zombie kid in Monkey Riches?
Thank you based Deak

nailed it.
thanks, though downvotes shows that AC fans have no humor ’bout their groupie-ness, thats no different from a Bieber fan. Anyway didn’t hate the album, but in this context, use the world “overrated” would grant me at least 10 over downvotes, so I’m just gonna say “not my thing” with a half-smile.
Wide Eyed is amazing, is that Deakin on vocals?
Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see
It’s not the first time, Moy; he did vocals on a few remixes, included the one for Phoenix’s “Love Like A Sunset”.
And maybe you were just put off by how much his voice stood out He’s obviously not a strong singer but I find him to be even less pitchy than Avey Tare. In an alternate universe where Deakin was the main vocalist and Avey surprised everybody by singing on a sole track from the band’s tenth album, I’m sure that a few of us would be complaining about how odd Avey sounds.
Give Deaks some time. :(
It’s one of the album’s highlights and his voice a nice break in the proceedings.
anybody hear his track on the KEEP cassette that leaked? good stuff.
seriously liked his clarity of emotion more than Panda’s track. Avey Tare still the king of that tho
Spazzing out over Applesauce!
Hey guys what did I miss?
what happens if you don’t think it’s very good?
do you enjoy fire & brimstone?
sigh
I think you mean: le sigh
I’ve listened to this twice already this morning. Now that I’ve listened to it, I wish that my digital download of the album was available. I am still very excited to spin the vinyl when it arrives soon, but I’m kind of obsessed right now and know the stream will be gone within 24 hours. White people problems.
Some of the melodies, especially Avey’s stuff, are kind of too busy for their own good. I’m gonna need like twenty more listens. Percussion is awesome.
Hey you guys!! Has it started yet?!?
…

Back to the extra weird again. I like so far ^-^
The last quarter of “Moonjock” makes me hop around my room like a ten y.o. on a sugar-high.
that is my favorite moment of the album so far
and then we ran out again and we ran out again and we ran it out, ran it out…
on endless loop.
Liking it, not loving it.
A day in and this is album of the year thus far for me.
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Man, I’m always late to the party. I brought jam and everything.
And the humans listened to AnCo. And the humans were glad that weed existed. And the human’s looked forward to a day when a new strain would be born and they would purchase it and proceed to smoke it and it would be called Centipede HZ.
Also +1 for Astronomy Domine fuck yeah to Piper at the Gates of Dawn
can’t stop listening to applesauce!
Amazing
More like Centipede HURTS!
Wow. You know you’re late to the party when the first time you look at a thread there’s already 278 comments.
It rouses as much as it flattens you — the sonic equivalent to having both ADD and claustrophobia.
