Animal Collective - Centipede HZ

As promised, Animal Collective will be streaming their new album, Centipede Hz, in its entirety tonight on their weekly online radio show, following Geologist’s mix of songs that inspired the LP. We’ve already heard (and seen) “Today’s Supernatural” so it’s probably about time we figured out what the rest of this record’s deal is. Is it as weird as Deakin stated it would be? Only one way to find out — let us Prematurely Evaluate together below like a family. Head over to the streaming show to jump in on the broadcast and tell us what you think.

Here’s the tracklist so you know how to refer to the songs once it starts:
1. “Moonjock” – 5:04
2. “Today’s Supernatural” – 4:18
3. “Rosie Oh” – 2:57
4. “Applesauce” – 5:34
5. “Wide Eyed” – 5:00
6. “Father Time” – 4:35
7. “New Town Burnout” – 6:01
8. “Monkey Riches” – 6:46
9. “Mercury Man” – 4:18
10. “Pulleys” – 3:31
11. “Amanita” – 5:39

Centipede Hz is out 9/4 via Domino.

UPDATE: You can stream the album, track-by-track, at the band’s website now.

  1. i would rant about how Geologist is under appreciated but I love how he’s not at all. he gets just as much attention

  2. PULLEYE IS FANTASTIC ALREADY GOOD GOD SHIT’S GREAT

  3. I just realized that I’m gonna be so sad that I wont be able to hear this for like another two weeks

  4. OMG…that intro was insane!

  5. so overjoyed. i love this so much

  6. Almost done, Centipede Hz for album of the year…on a very early prediction

  7. Want to say this album has a strawberry jam feel with the presence Avey has…but it’s really a different animal all together. Makes sense since no two of their albums are alike, and this is up there with anything else they’ve done, imho.

  8. this is some kung-fu soundtrack groove right here.

  9. i also saw them live. i can’t believe how well the previous songs transferred to recording. even the transitions, all of it has been seamless/flawless.

  11. amanita is effing rediculous!

  12. Go figure….Amanita is a genus of toxic mushrooms.

  13. The “Ohs” in Amantia…damn

  14. what a awesome closing track, is there an auto repeat button???

trying to collect my brains and jaw from the floor… truly an unreal experience listening to that in this setting people. a fantastic piece of work, cant wait to listen to this 100s of more times.

New Town Burnout, Applesauce and Wide Eyed were standouts for me. but who we are kidding, they were all fucking great.

  15. transmission over
    refresh for archive

  16. great album.

  17. Well this was fun everybody. Cheers.

  18. New Town Burnout. Best song of…ever?

  19. I can’t believe how strangely compelling this is! But what else would you expect from the kings of modern neo-psychadelia?

  20. Awesome — they left the album stream up. Not that it isn’t already on every torrent site in existence.

  21. I’m going to go ahead and listen to this 4 more times before I go to bed and wake up and listen to it all day tomorrow.

  22. seems like the songs will be streamable in no time

  23. When the SETI project finally hears a radio signal from aliens, I think it’ll sounds like this album.

  24. between this album and The Seer, there’s going to be some fucking incredible music coming out the next two weeks.

  25. Well done AC, you guys are one of a kind

  26. I’m gonna bring back some stories and games.

  27. Really gonna try to avoid any sort of kneejerk reaction to this album, but that was definitely a good first listen. That “In the back of our old car/Never going too far” moment on the first track is already one of my favorite choruses of the year, though.

  28. Has anyone else realized that there are quite a few (expectedly) incredible albums coming out in the next couple of months by bands that are wildlife themed? i.e. Animal Collective (obviously), Cat Power, Grizzly Bear, Band of Horses, etc.

  29. First impression: Might actually be my third favorite AnCo record. My top 5 now stands as MPP > Strawberry Jam > Centipede Hz > Feels > Sung Tongs. Really stellar LP, good job boys.

  30. God bless anticipation. God bless climax.

  31. Some of the lyrics have changes since their 2011 tour, especially on “Mercury Man,” as if Avey got over his divorce… It’s still chill, just missing that raw emotion.

  32. surprising like of hz puns. c’mon guys, i was counting on you for this.

  33. If this song (the song that this website calls “Today’s Supernatural”) isn’t on the album… Then what the fuck is this??!!

  34. makes pet sounds sound like pigfart

  35. I don’t really like it all that much but I’ll probably listen to it 20 times over.

    Cool Jams 8)

Favorites so far are the two Panda Jams and Mercury Man (and every other section of Applesauce)

  36. So who’s going to rip those tracks and upload them for me?

  37. They must have played “Father Time” at P4K last summer, because it sounds familiar.

  38. So it was….good?

  39. Here’s Geologist telling how some of those transition sounds were made.
“…While mixing Centipede Hz, we were killing time at the studio by playing around with some synthesizer apps we just found, and it turned into a pretty long drone jam. I got hungry and wanted to tell the other guys we should get lunch, but I didn’t want to kill the vibe so while we were playing I quickly looked for a robot voice app that I could program to say ‘Who wants lunch?’ and started looping it until the other guys realized what it was saying. We ate shortly after, and later went on to use the same voice on the album and in the videos we’ve been releasing on our website.”

  40. I’m not listening to this right now. Hell, I’m not really even a fan of animal collective but all these comments are making me really excited and anxious to hear this album once it is released. MPP was somewhat enjoyable for me at times, and I liked campfire songs, so ill definitely give this one a shot.

  41. it is so hot it is burning my brain apart. moonjock actually feels like big beast with the ridiculous chest pounding hits. the visuals are amazing! good lord, is this move of the year?

  43. Don’t want to read the comments until I say this: This is the best mix of what I liked about Feels, Strawberry Jam, and MPP all rolled into one, yet, Animal Collective finds a way to bring even more to the table and make this a newer sound than all of those. Really really good.
Right now (tentatively, until I listen few more times) my list of AC faves goes 1. SJ 2.Centipede 3. Feels 4. MPP

  44. WOW!!! Im simply in awe! Not dissappointed at all. They are truely masters at their craft. LONG LIVE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE!!! Cenetipede Hz is amazing

  45. Is it just me or does it totally sound like they’re sampling zombie kid in Monkey Riches?

  46. Thank you based Deak

  48. Wide Eyed is amazing, is that Deakin on vocals?

  49. Spazzing out over Applesauce!

  50. Hey guys what did I miss?

  51. what happens if you don’t think it’s very good?

  52. I’ve listened to this twice already this morning. Now that I’ve listened to it, I wish that my digital download of the album was available. I am still very excited to spin the vinyl when it arrives soon, but I’m kind of obsessed right now and know the stream will be gone within 24 hours. White people problems.

  53. Some of the melodies, especially Avey’s stuff, are kind of too busy for their own good. I’m gonna need like twenty more listens. Percussion is awesome.

  54. Hey you guys!! Has it started yet?!?

    :(

  56. Back to the extra weird again. I like so far ^-^

  57. The last quarter of “Moonjock” makes me hop around my room like a ten y.o. on a sugar-high.

  58. Liking it, not loving it.

  59. A day in and this is album of the year thus far for me.

  60. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  61. Man, I’m always late to the party. I brought jam and everything.

  62. And the humans listened to AnCo. And the humans were glad that weed existed. And the human’s looked forward to a day when a new strain would be born and they would purchase it and proceed to smoke it and it would be called Centipede HZ.

  63. Also +1 for Astronomy Domine fuck yeah to Piper at the Gates of Dawn

  64. can’t stop listening to applesauce!

  65. More like Centipede HURTS!

  66. Wow. You know you’re late to the party when the first time you look at a thread there’s already 278 comments.

  67. It rouses as much as it flattens you — the sonic equivalent to having both ADD and claustrophobia.
