How long before this week’s NME‘s coverboys steal the dance rock crown from the Franzies?

Find out what the hot fuss is about (link via ProductShopNYC).

  1. called it a while back after first hearing Silent Alarm that Bloc Party will be the Killers and/or Franz Ferdinand of ’05, but i enjoy their album much more than Franz’s, and don’t really like more than 2 songs on the Killers, so at least they’re worth a lot of the hype.

  2. I know it’s everyone’s prediction, but I’m not sure I see it happenin. They just don’t seem have the same hooks the Franzies got (well, except for “Banquet”). But what the hell do I know….

    <3 bloc party

  4. Ryan, i tend to agree, that there’s a very slight possibility they will fall under the mainstream radar here, at least on the size of Franz, Modest Mouse, or the Killers anyway. their music is a bit harder/punkier, something casual music fans might not like.

who knows though. i guess i’d be more surprised if they don’t break pretty big than if they do.

  5. Maybe the next Rapture then.

Looking at that NME cover, I’m thinking … Oasis probably feel like has-beens.

Finally. I don’t know what it is about Bloc Party that I love so much, when I despise Franz Ferdinand as much as I do. I could never get into them, and the comparison weirds me out a little. I guess the vocals in FF are annoying. Really smarmy. It’s the cheesy lounge music of our generation and no one realizes it yet. Franz Ferdinand is our version of Wayne Newton, and the Strokes are just Tom Jones.

  7. i wouldn’t say the next rapture because bloc party has a more substance to their music and about 75% of the rapture’s success is due to the dfa.

i think bloc party is a bit better than franzes, but they lack that crossover vibe.

  8. wow. sounds pretty fuckin boring to me.

I’d tend to agree that they won’t reach the success of FF or Killers. I’d probably tap The Bravery for Killers-sized stardom, but I do love Silent Alarm. Like Eating Glass, Positive Tension, and Pioneers are brilliant.

By the way, you can get two of the songs mentioned in my above post from Bloc Party at http://ohsweetblasphemy.blogspot.com/ as well as a b-side from The Bravery.

  11. witz.org ♥’s bloc party:

they’re so much better than Franz Ferdinand..

    “Oasis probably feel like has-beens.”

They’re playing the biggest stadiums in the UK this summer, so I doubt it.

Plus, they do a ton of coke, so I doubt it.

By the way, does anyone else think the Bloc Party lead singer sounds a lot like Damon Albarn?

  15. anthony  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2005 0

This is boring. At least franz is catchy as hell. This is just. British.

  16. How long before they eclipse the Franzies? Try last May.

  17. if you really care about the next hype thingy after the franz, then i’d strongly recommend you to listen to some “maximo park”-stuff (http://www.xfm.co.uk/Article.asp?id=31675)

they should be huge at the end of the year (also in the nme)…

Thanks, but I’ve had enough of heroin-inspired crap retro rock.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again:

block party = that pop punk band millencolin if they tried to make indie music. BORING. Better than the rapture? Haha. They defined the entire indie dance year…at least they were somewhat innovative. Bloc party are generic and boring.

  20. DreamsNeverEnd  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2005 0

you must be mistaken, the dance rock crown still belongs to new order.

  21. Max  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2005 0

They may be derivative of a lot of other stuff (strangely, I think Kele sounds a bit like Robert Smith), but what isn’t? I don’t think there’s anything new sounding out there, and I can’t see that anything at the moment is better than Bloc Party. It may have been done before, but it has seldom recently been done this well. Bloc Party rule.

  22. Devin  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2005 0

haha-ok! I will give you new order, but no bloc party. How new bands like this get recognized over the shocking pinks amazes me.

  23. Hey, I absolutely adore the Shocking Pinks, but don’t see what that has to do with whether or not Bloc Party is any good.

As for the Rapture, yes…their highs may be higher, but their lows (of which there are many) are much, much lower! At least Bloc Party’s fucking consistent.

And quit trying to compare them to Millenwhatever. No one cares.
