I ONLY use shuffle on my Mini, so I ain’t mad at this.

Sorta like the iPaq PA-2 that used to live in my pocket years ago, but sleeker. And MUCH more storage. A 512MB iPod Shuffle is $99 and the 1Gig model goes for $149. I’ll never get one (I hate not being able to know what song’s playing), but you can decide for yourself here.

  2. dubstylenine  |   Posted on Jan 11th, 2005

that’s sooo lame. why would anyone want that?

take control of your life and just say no to random play, people.

  3. you can also pee on the end of it to see if you’re pregnant.

Can we please get over the ipod and ipod related craze? Some of us never really gave a damn.

    *pets her ibook and yawns*

I love my iPod, but this particular Apple product doesn’t seem that cool. There’s no display. You can get an iRiver that’s more functional for about the same cost.

  6. If i’m not mistaken, you can play this without the shuffle option.

  7. n is right; you can play the songs in the order you transferred them from your computer. The switch that changes between shuffle and normal mode is on the back (not seen in Stereogum’s photo).

Personally, I think the “stick” design is nice, especially since they put a USB connector on the end, thus avoiding all those annoying cables.

You got your I-pod, I got my hash pipe.

  9. Did you scroll to the bottom of the page? Best fine print disclaimer ever…

    “Do not eat iPod Shuffle.”

  10. Courtney  |   Posted on Jan 11th, 2005

that is some hilarious fine print!

Stereogum, what do you use your ipod mini for?

Fine print not as funny as Happy Fun Ball fine print

  14. Is it just me or does ipod read your mind? Seriously, like I’ll be listening think to myself, “I’m in the mood for Le Tigre, I haven’t heard one of their songs in like 2 months.” and the next song that comes up is totally Le Tigre. Or like, it will play “Patience” when I’m stuck on the subway for 20 minutes.

I gave my first gen iPod to someone who would use it. Me? the “Shuffle” is more up my alley.

I like to have about 10 albums in rotation. I know what they are. I would not shuffle the songs (it’s an option). It’s perfect. And affordable.

  16. How much does Apple pay you guys to pimp their shit?

You all wear black turtlenecks, sip Starbucks’ overpriced burnt coffee, listen to shitty music (“rock” and all variations are DEAD, people), and have anal sex. Way to (not) contribute to society :(

  17. time of death: 7:34 p.m., 1/11/05.

rest in peace, rock and all your wonderful variations.

fucking douchebag. since when is having anal sex something to be insulted about?

  18. Matthew Sworth  |   Posted on Jan 11th, 2005

I enjoy anal sex and listen to shitty music, but I probably contribute more to society than you do, ma friend. As for the black turtlenecks, dude, that is so 1982. It’s black blazers and parkas that are the rage now.

  19. Matthew Sworth  |   Posted on Jan 11th, 2005

I actually meant to comment on the ipod! I usually use my mini on shuffle, too. It’s too much of a pain in the ass to choose every new song and its more fun to be surprised. But this thing would drive me crazy because I know I would eventually want to choose the songs.

*slurp* Mmmmm…my burnt Starbucks latte sure tastes good!

  20. peter  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2005

what the fuck’s an iPod got to do with contributing to society? I use mine to so I don’t have to, but I turn it off during anal sex…

  22. Anyone know the song being used in the shuffle ad?

Also, will this shuffle mentality further lead to the decline of the album? mmm… hardware shaping the medium…

  23. laine  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2005

a day into the announcement and Gratis Internet is already offering free ipod shuffles:
    http://www.freeipodshuffle.com/?r=13866214

And you only need 3 referals!

  24. Jen W  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2005

peter, you should totally make an “anal sex” mix. Also, my black turtleneck sweater doubles as a cozy gag to stifle my lover’s screams.

I’m still saving for the elusive iPod, but in the meantime, I am an iTunes shuflle junkie-whore. But I couldn’t go shuffle all the time. I need to know I have options.

  25. G Fong  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2005

For anyone who needs to know, the song in the “Shuffle” ad is the Caesar’s “Jerk It Out”, which is like two years old or something.

I don’t think I would really ever pay for a Shuffle, since all of the new iPods have that feature. Scott, do you just offload part of your music collection to your Mini? I’d consider downgrading from my 40 GB model, but I have around 500 CDs.

  26. maybeidon'tgiveafuck  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2005

For the last frigging time. The option to not have your songs shuffle is an available option!

Second, I like the “stick” design, but why didn’t they just put a screen on the back? Or have a screen that pops out at a touch of a button so that they can stick to the new design?

  27. duh, cause then it’d be more expensive, “maybeidontgiveafuck”

  28. 311guy  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2005

If there was an ability to rate the songs on the fly, this would be mine.

  29. well the fact that you can “un shuffle” the shuffle button should be a little more clear. after all, if they are going to use the fine print to let us know not to eat the damn thing, they should let us know it ain’t just for shuffling.

  30. This just seems like a waste of money. 1 GB of music for $149.00? I’d rather save my money and get a real iPod.

  31. Robert  |   Posted on Jan 14th, 2005

Pretty good deal for the money I think. Probably a good choice for single-whores and people who download off mp3 blogs alot and don’t really care about order, like me.

  32. There’s also the fact that it’s much cheaper. Maybe that’s not a problem for all the rich hipsters but for many it might be important!

  33. confused  |   Posted on Jan 16th, 2005

Why people use iPods will forever confuse me. I have a 1 gig SD card in my iPAQ 3115 and trust me, it does a whole heck of a lot more than play music. True, it’s not as good for anal sex as the iPod, but there might be an add-on later…

  34. I’m bringing the shuffle to Europe this summer. I’ll probably lose it or break it during the trip, and since its so cheap I probably won’t cry when that happens.
