The xx - Coexist

Singers Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim pass it back and forth on the xx’s newest single, the taut, sexy “Sunset.” Though Madley-Croft has insisted that the new record isn’t a “world away” from their debut, “Sunset” allows Jamie xx’s percussive textures a little further into the mix than usual. Listen below.

[The track was unofficial, and therefore removed.]

Coexist is out 9/11 on Young Turks. As they have been touring the new stuff, “Sunset” has been on a few set lists.

  1. NOW try and say they haven’t changed since their debut.

  2. Pretty great. I’d say it’s my favorite of the songs released so far.

  3. How has this album not gotten a Premature Evaluation/Comment Party yet? Leaked a week ago. And it’s great!

  4. My favorite song off of the new album which tbh I found pretty underwhelming, albeit I’m looking forward to seeing where they go next because I really do think they expanded their sonic pallet in some exciting ways. Looking forward to the premature evaluation or album of the week or whatever you guys give it.

  5. I didn’t ever get around to really liking the first album but since my brother is such a fan of theirs, I downloaded the leak and decided to try it out and was immediately blown away by the diversity of the sound design (no one track has the same sounds, except for voices, guitar, and bass) and the different electronic genres each track flirts with (2step, UKGarage, Hip Hop, Indie Pop, Techno (despite how narcotic it may be), Dubstep (Burial) and combinations thereof.)

Also a really great experience listening to this in light (and to take a rest from) of the sonic maximalism of Centipede Hz. Two incredibly dissimilar yet engrossing listening experiences.

  6. More like The zz

    • I just “liked” this comment as well as Slothdrop’s above comment. I’d say my taste in comments is just as sophisticated and diverse as the musical stylings of some of my favorite bands!

  7. Since no one can comment on the interns post, I just want to say that I was surprised to hear that there actually is a Stereogum office. Just think, if I lived in New York, I could comment in person!

    • I was bummed that there were no comments for that one. I think applicants should have had to post their resume in the comment section and the one with the most plus ones gets the position.

        • I was under the impression that I had proven my abilities… so I don’t really understand why this was posted externally? Maybe you guys didn’t have my email?

          • Everyone knows they had to re-start the internship program again after I decided to stop supporting them on a weekly basis with my tips and commenting here.

Premature Evaluation for the xx’s Coexist for those who like to read them: All those couples who got each other preggers grinding it up all sensual and sweaty to the first album will be pleased to know that your resulting baby now has a new favorite album to put him or her to sleep.

I anticipate ‘Gum’s version will go something like this, though: “It’s absolutely gorgeous.” – “Gorgeous” Tom Breihan

If you need me, I’ll be somewhere that has a spine to its content.

          • you should put a frame on that work of art you just made – lookin REAL good in that pic

          • If it’s a personal thing, hey, I have no problem with that. However, if I am being downvoted because there are people out there who really think Michael_ is not hellbent on being Stereogum’s focal point, I fear for our country’s future.

          • Wow, I’ve never noticed how good I look. Flossy hornrims to compliment the bow – make em think I’ve got Republican leanings, infiltrate, and tear those muhfukkas down from the inside.

            D styls.

  8. This album is an exercise in restraint. Probs my favy track on the album, which is a grower. I keep going back to Angels too. With that track, it’s so minimal, that the reason it is excellent is pure, unadulterated talent.

and that’s tits, in my book:

    • “an exercise in restraint” is pretty much the best description I’ve read about it so far.
It’s also the best step forward they could have taken. It feels almost like a step back, which is amazing for a second album.

  9. So is it safe to assume that everyone has heard the whole album and no one is allowed to talk about it until it’s officially out?

  10. Honestly, this album sounds like the b-sides for their debut
