When Brandon posted Miles Kurosky’s “I Can’t Swim,” he mentioned that the song packed in “a lot of living.” Life after Beulah had included a marriage and a series of surgeries to repair a shoulder injury. That injury kept Kurosky away from the guitar for a while. “Dog In The Burning Building” is a bit more whimsical than “I Can’t Swim,” as indicated by its lyrics and puppet-filled video. Maybe there’s a hint towards a darker metaphor (the titular dog won’t leave the burning building because of his sense of loyalty), but it’s hard to get too serious when one of the characters in your video is a talking flame.

The Desert of Shallow Effects is out 3/9 on Majordomo Records.

  1. Does anyone know where/how to watch this outside of the US? YouTube is telling me “This video is not available in your country” =(

Really looking forward to this album and his show in a month or so. I’m curious to see whether he’ll play some Beulah stuff or just stick to the new material.

He’s taking Beulah ‘requests’ on his Facebook page: http://bit.ly/cYW1aO

That’s cool. He could play any of them and it would be fine with me. I like artists that don’t ignore their past. I mean, they’re his songs for the most part. I wish he wasn’t playing the same night as Spoon, but I’ve seen Spoon a bunch of times, and the Aragon is a really shitty place to see a show.

The first time I saw Grant Lee Phillips I was worried that he’d ignore the Buffalo material which I’d never had a chance to see live. But he always incorporates a good mix of both.
