Not gonna do it.
I’ve been living with this pretty song for so long, I don’t want new pictures to go with it…
thank you so much for posting that link!
I agree, I invisioned something much more apocalyptic and desperate… with slight glimpses of hope… and defintily should be set in a city.
Whereas, Mr. Hess invisions the song as some sort of polyphonic spree wet dream set on the distant fiction planet of Tatooine.
Maybe if it had cliched catch phrases such as “Hey Benny, wet your bed last night?” “Hey Jimmy, Take a Dump in your bed last night?
oh and I still love the Postal Service and Jared Hess.
I swear I wore the exact same clothes in my high school production of “Hair” – Excellent!
just wondering if anyone knew where this was filmed, because it looks exactly like my home the high desert, CA
No kidding…I’m from the high desert too and it looks exactly like it.
Who’s the girl?
jenny from rilo kiley, right?
dig the jerky. mm. jerky.
I suspect that it’s Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley.
yeah that’s jenny–my girl crush. jared hess’ wife is a friend of mine, she says the concept of the video began with the Mormon “family home evening” manual–a book with ideas for family night activities. (the hess’ are mormon) i believe they filmed it near la.
oh stop. it’s just a video. interpret the song and video seperately. or one or the other. it’s not that hard.
I’m pretty sure it’s Vasquez Rocks, off the 14 here in the Santa Clarita Valley in Southern California. You may remember it from countless Twilight Zone and Star Trek episodes (remember when Kirk battles the Gorn?). I’m sure that must be Jenny and Jimmy with Ben… and I love the pre-apocalyptic feel of it. Very LDS, I think. Bikes, weird outfits, cupboard with cans of food, and “when our bodies finally go”… the words and pictures go together nicely, even if that’s not what Ben was originally thinking.
That is one wicked awesome Food Dehydrator cameo!
that reminded me so much of Family Home Evening that it almost wasn’t funny, thanks bianca for the confirmation of sorts.
i still love jenny lewis.
I AM CRYING TEARS OF PURE JOY AND ECTASY!
Haha, my family home evenings are nothing like that, although my dad is very special all the same. But we did have peaches and pears for dessert often.
>I’ve been living with this pretty song for so long, I don’t >want new pictures to go with it…
ditto!
oh come on already.
can’t we get past suckling from the teet of all of this 80′s recycled bullshit?
it’s sooooo tired…..
not really feeling the video, at least not for this song. am i the only one who is really creeped out by this mormon movement of cinema? napoleon dynamite was so funny until they pointed out that it was all based on things that have happened to them and their wives (and duh yes they’re all married at like 22 cause they’re all mormons).
jenny is looking good though. thanks for the link!
i don’t think it’s possible for jenny lewis not to look adorable.
>…wet dream set on the distant fiction planet of Tatooine.
seriously. wtf is this.
I never liked videos, including this one.
Wow, what a non-departure filmicly. I assume that he just pocketed the money and recycled the sets and costumes from Napolean Dynamite. Cute, but completely non-stimulating.
santa clarita also has a HUGE mormon population…
i thought this video fell really flat. omg, we totally get the joke! you’re mormon, but also kitchy and cool! ugh.
that video is so boring. and i think they are all i little too pleased with themselves in it.
After getting an autograph and saying “Have a good show” to Jenny Lewis before she went onstage at an Orlando Rilo Kiley gig, I must say that she’s as short as she is cute. Or cute as she is short.
Either way.
The Shins do a better version of this song that Postal Service does. Not surprising since The Shins are quite possibly the best band to come out in the last 5 years…
- i heart jenny lewis –
that is all.
This video answers my question of whether or not Ben and Jenny were ever together.
It’s a cute video, though not what I would have imagined.
I agree with Anthony, es, and everybody else who doesn’t totally love this. David Byrne’s “True Stories” provided a much better, much more sincere, less-self-satisfied glimpse of suburbia and suburban folk than NDynamite (or WAnderson, for my money)…nearly twenty years ago.
Homegirl IS cute, though.
Does anyone else feel like Napoleon Dynamite was a little too derivative of Bottle Rocket shot for shot? Yes, it was cutesy, and ha ha, he’s a nerd, good joke, but the film failed to really make a lasting impression on me. I really didn’t notice any complexities or feel anything towards it or the characters one way or another to even warrant a second viewing. Video is ok, but that whole ironic 80′s suburbia theme was played out by the end of the film. We don’t need a wave of videos with the same formula. I’ll probably get dumped on for not being too crazy about ND, but there it is. Jenny Lewis make a Borat Happy!
I liked it. It’s interesting to see how others interpret the song.
Why dump on Jared Hess’ style? Lots of filmmakers have a “look” that dominates most of their films. It’s not a bad thing.
Actually, Mormons are cool and this video is great.
“that video is so boring. and i think they are all i little too pleased with themselves in it.”
Oh yeah, I agree. But Jenny is so fucking cute that I watched the damn thing the whole way through.
Also, I get kind of an E.T. vibe from this video, mainly when their on the bikes and their outfits are billowing in the breeze. (Does this makes any sense at all?)
Uh, that should be “they’re on the bikes.” Ugh.
Yeah, the lyrics for that song are so descriptive in themselves that this video isn’t as visually exciting as my mind is. Cute costumes and mom though!
So weird how the “Indie” genre in music and movies is a simulation of its former self. I agree with the ‘Bottle Rocket’ reference.
Martian Chronicles before the evil aliens step in.
i’ve listened to quite a bit of postal service and death cab, but i’ve never really bothered with finding out more than that. heh, ben gibbard doesn’t look anything like how i imagined him to be.
what is ben gibbard doing?? he can’t pull that look off. he looks like he’s in a bad 70s porn movie and we all know that the men in porn (straight) are not cute.
this song is soo pretty. ive listened to it 5 times in row for an entire week. i love looking at jimmy tamorellos face when hes playing the keyboard. he looks soo innocent. its cute. and jenny lewis is very pretty.
I kept Thinking about Elizabeth Smart and the Crazy Mormon Rapist Jesus guy and how fucked up her life must be with her crazy ass family.
The video makes me think of how a lot of people back in the fifties had bomb shelters to hide out in just in case a nueclear holocaust were to happen. They sing some karaoke. Eat some canned food. It’s just them trying to find ways to spend their time while they are stuck in their fallout shelter. They go outside and find that either everyone is dead, or too afraid to explode to come out. I thought it was a good video for the song because all I could think of listening to is was people hiding out in a bomb shelter. The end.
Whoa…I’m LDS and that is SO A FAMILY HOME
EVENING MANUAL!!! ha ha ha
