Electronica is so 1998, but nineties nostalgia is so 2005. Here’s some hott new dance music for robots.

Fans of the superb Contino Sessions will want to dismiss the new Death In Vegas disc. Don’t. It sounds soulless at first, but it’ll get under your skin.

This disc doesn’t blow me away, but hipper bloggers seem to think it’s the greatest thing since sliced del.icio.us. I like this tune because it sounds like Pink Floyd.

Daft Punk – “Human After All” (apparently this is a fake, sorry kids)
I didn’t even know Daft Punk had a new album coming out, but someone e-mailed me this funky track this morning. Thanks mystery person, I love it. I would dance to it if I danced.

In brief…

  • Basement Jaxx are dropping a singles comp in March. It’s got 2 new tracks, one of which is at Fluxblog.
  • Portishead are working on their first album in eight years.
  • ElectroBeck has announced a tracklist and release date for Guero.
  • Aphex Twin is doing an album of Joanna Newsom remixes. Just kidding. But he is releasing a ten-part Analord series that will be expensive and unlistenable.

oh my god, new Portishead? f*ckin awesome.

at least i hope it will be…

    3. I haven’t d/l-ed your DPunk track to check, but I know there’s a version circulating around that’s actually just a mislabled mp3 of Alter Ego’s “Rocker.”

    4. Paul, I can confirm it’s not that track… although I hate to say it’s superior to the “real” Daft Punk track here.

    5. Can someone please tell me what the appeal of LCD Soundsystem. Scott’s surely right that the MP3 Blogger/Pitchfork/Hipster crowd can’t seem to get enough of this shit, but I find them to be a snooty inside joke that probably isn’t very funny even if you are on the inside. Seriously, if someone reading this is among those who think this band is great, I’d love to hear what you think is so good about them… I just don’t see it.

    6. If the only LCD SS stuff you’ve heard is on the new LP, then you missed the boat already. It’s the early singles (Losing My Edge, Beat Connection, Give It Up, Yeah) that earned the respect. The LP, with the exception of a couple tracks, just pales in comparison.

    7. the LCD LP is an entirely different beast than all the acclaimed 12″ singles that preceded it. i was also disappointed with it at first, but have really gotten into it after giving it time & repeated listens. it’s not the best thing since the mac mini, but i think it’s actually pretty good.

i had been saying that “never as tired” sounded like james murphy’s beatles song, but you’re right – floyd is more accurate.

    8. i prefer “robot rock” from the new daft punk, which ishkur.com has available for download. but i dig both tunes, though they feel a bit abbreviated.

on LCD – yeah, the early singles are tremendous. the hype is well-deserved, but those first songs set the bar impossibly high.

      yay electronica :)

    10. i’m glad someone else agrees with me about that lcd track…it’s totally “obscured by cloud” floyd…

    11. Geez, ‘Gum. This is the most useful blogger entry of the week. Three mp3s that I care about in one post! Thanks.

    12. this is the only lcd soundsystem song i’ve ever heard that i actually liked. does all of the new album sound like pink floyd?

    13. jt – no. The album has one or two other tracks like that, but most of it is dancey stuff. I love the album. I had planned on hating it. I thought that LCD SS basically was a combination of ministry + ween with a shitload more irony. But the album is actually very good, very listenable.

Like everything, it’s not for everyone. Which is fine.

I’ll agree its a little floyd-esque, but you can seriously sing “Dear Prudence” perfectly along with the chorus of that LCD SS song…

    15. Yeah, that Daft Punk song is one of several attempts to punk advance-hungry fans. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the real deal.

you dont know how high my stomach jumped when i read that afx was going to do a j-new remix… for shame, stereobrit, for shame

    17. just to be perfectly clear: the “daft punk” track posted is fake.

    18. circuitshack  |   Posted on Jan 21st, 2005

yah, that track sounded pretty weak/dated as a lead off single for a new daft punk album, expecting something much better.

That LCD cut happened to make a good soundtrack to the “Blogger Breakdown” video that ToTC posted:

      LCD Soundsystem: Radiohead, Radiohead, Radiohead.

    21. sasefina  |   Posted on Jan 22nd, 2005

was going to say that towards the end of that LCD soundsystem song i spaced out and thought i was listening to dear prudence, but i guess someone beat me to the punch.

    22. i would be extraordinarily disappointed if the ‘leak’ that made this particular daft punk track be declared fake is the real deal- mostly because the production sounds quite poor on it, and DP is not known for that.
