Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the Canadian anarcho-punk post-rock orchestra whose live shows will straight-up break your brain, have been reunited and playing shows for more than a year now. And today, we find out that the reunion is going up to another level. In a scant two weeks, they’ll release their first new album since 2002′s Yanqui U.X.O. The new LP comes bearing the quintessentially Godspeed title of Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!, and it’s got two of the band’s epic 20-minute instrumental pieces, “MLADIC” and “WE DRIFT LIKE WORRIED FIRE,” both of which have been parts of their recent live shows. It’s also got two six-minute drone pieces. On CD, they’re part of the album’s sequence, but on vinyl, they’re on their own bonus 7″. But yeah: This is just awesome news.

More bands should follow this model of album release. Start selling the vinyl at a show with absolutely no warning, wait a few hours, make official announcement saying it will be available everywhere in two weeks, watch everyone shit themselves. No fuss, no hyping, just great music.
I was at the show in Boston last night and basically everybody was standing around in the lobby, holding copies of this record in their hands, completely dumbfounded. Quite the pleasant surprise on top of a jaw dropping show.

I first got into Godspeed (late) in 2004. Their reunion tour was a great shock and happy surprise. This… This somehow tops all of that.

my only regret is that i have but one upvote to give. this was pretty much my exact reaction.
I could not believe how much of an emotional reaction came to me when I started playing Mladic. The music is so grand and absorbing that had me in tears.
I pre-ordered the vinyl, and already decided to frame the poster. Does anyone know where to get a 12×48 frame on the cheap?
I can think of a better “first new track in ten years” than Mladic. It encapsulates everything there is to love about the band. A grand welcome back, indeed.
