No buzz for Tegan And Sara in Ultra’s comment section. C’mon, “Walking With A Ghost” isn’t that offensive! At least they play instruments, right? Pitchfork remains unimpressed.

The first single from So Jealous, “Walking With a Ghost,” sounds like one of those dummy mp3s major labels post on KaZaA to fool unsuspecting music lovers, where the first 10 seconds loop for five minutes. Remember when you thought “House of Jealous Lovers” was instrumental? “Walking With a Ghost” repeats three or four mundane phrases– particularly “out of my mind”– dozens of times in two-and-a-half-minutes, all over the same jerky, studio-polished guitar chords. I suppose it’s almost as catchy as the latest McDonalds jingle, but it’s also utterly boring.

Even if you don’t like their music, don’t you agree their party invite is cute? (.mov file)

What’s with the hair though? Is that a Canadian thing?

I’ve heard they go through 2 tanks of helium during their shows…and Moe Howard wants his haircut back….

  2. Weird, I like that “Walking With A Ghost” for the same reason the Pitchfork guy hates it – it’s such a formally weird song, all that repetition, it’s a strange form because it makes you expect these changes that never come. I like when songs subvert a listener’s expectations.

Amy Phillips accurately describes their hair as “fashion mullets.”

  3. Its not A Canadian thing, I don’t have a weird mullet hing. Tegan and Sara are masters of the pop song. They have been quite popular on the Vanouver indie scene for a while.

i think thier anoying, every album and ad for shows its a picture of them sucking in thier cheeks trying to look hot and indie.

  6. hahahaha  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

    One word: Tatu

  7. I am stumped by the Tegan and Sara fascination — every time they play on Indie I keep thinking that two of the interns have taken over and are forcing their off key voices on us. They make me want to poke out my eardrums with chopsticks. Why are they popular???

  8. BeavisOnCrack  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

because they are lesbian sisters, and this is America. We thrive off that shit, dont we? lol

  9. Plague  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

If that is mastery of a pop song, I know some people who are flipping over in their graves about now.

  10. daykinmade  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

who still has a la bret piercing anyway?

  11. Neil Young personally signed them to his record label, Neil Young is cooler than all of you combined, suck it.

    :)

  12. I don’t think they were very popular with the Vancouver Indie scene, more like the Commercial Drive faux-hippie crowd. Before they started writing the pop oriented stuff they were doing the Ani Difranco thing.

  13. BeavisOnCrack  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

Thats ok Solace, A southern man dont need him around anyhow.

  14. s’ok, i don’t expect too many people to like em as much as i do myself. i just love a great pop song/melody, if done well (read: unlike MOST top 40 pop, not all, but most).

“Yo. Y’all need to stop dissing my girls Tegan and Sara. They’s doing what they want, and being themselves, and what’s that 2U, you know what I’m saying. You need to go chill and find another forum because this is for those of us who are fans. Y’all are just haters, and don’t know nothin’. Tegan and Sara, if you’re reading this, I love u, and keep doing what you’re doing. Your true fan.”

WHOA! Sorry…..Guess I’ve just been reading too many of the Britney threads!:)

  16. Peter Piper  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

no, its not just for their fans, and no, they dont read this. You must have also went to the same school as britney.

  17. carlie  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

Peter Piper — what I wrote was a SPOOF.:) Those Britney responses crack me up.

  18. they’re awesome. and what’s up with pitchfork reviewing their record two/three months AFTER release date anyway? once, they at least served the purpose of music release calendar; now, Pitchfork is on the verge of redundancy. (i.e.- no reason left for it to exist.)

  19. BeavisOnCrack  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

    lol @ Carlie…that was good.

  20. I saw them last Nov., not knowing really anything about them. They put on great show, with lots of cute and funny banter. Yeah, “walking with a ghost” gets old if you listen to it too much, but it doesn’t take anything away from the album. That song isn’t that bad.

Only bad thing about the show was half the audience was there because it was the trendy (in this case lesbian) thing to do. too much yapping

Angelina Jolie was there..if Tegan and Sara break up, can we blame her too?

  21. some dude  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

This song is dope, end of story. Don’t like it? It’s too repetitious? Fine. Like all music, you either connect or you don’t, but people seem a little quick to attack rather than converse. I’m also not sure that bringing up the lesbian thing does anything to further a discussion of their music. They don’t talk about being lesbians in their songs, why is it relevant to talk about them being lesbians when discussing their songs?

  22. I brought it up only because I found out they were afterwards..which explained the large turn out. I went to the show not knowing any of that, just solely on a couple songs I had heard a day before. A band could be made up extremely talented sea monkeys for I care..I still enjoyed Tegan & Sara enough to buy this album. It was just part of my experience in discovering them and their music.

  23. I don’t mind T&S too much, but I have to admit this:

“‘Walking With a Ghost,’ sounds like one of those dummy mp3s major labels post on KaZaA to fool unsuspecting music lovers, where the first 10 seconds loop for five minutes.”

    made me chuckle.

  24. The problem is that the song while catchy is kinda boring. Repeat, repeat, repeat only gets you so far. On a better note I’m glad to see you’re liking the new Archer Prewitt, I think that record is no less than amazing.

  25. calliwell  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

Hmm, well I happen to love Tegan and Sara and sure “Walking With a Ghost” is repetitive, but really there are other songs, and other cd’s for that matter.

Also, Carlie *claps* bravo! It’s true, when “y’all be hatin on Britney” out comes the people who even mispell fucking ebonics and forget to turn off the caps lock.

  26. When I saw them open up for Juliana Hatfield in 1998, their hysterical on-stage banter won me over, even if the music was a touch too Ani for my taste.

They opened up for Ryan Adams a couple years ago in support of their last album, and I was completely blown away — I couldn’t get enough of that record.

But this latest release? Snore. A couple of catchy tunes, but nothing that comes even close to “If It Was You.” A total disappointment.

  27. david brent  |   Posted on Jan 25th, 2005

I see no difference musically or structurally between this song and the latest Britney/ Hillary Duff/ Tatu single, except for the fact that the hipster kids will eat this one up in the name of being “indie”, while shunning those who don’t get it. Just further proof that the “indie” image used to market acts is slowly becoming a dead, bloated horse, destined for mediocrity. Who wants to bet that they will do a Maxim spread in the near future. The video is an incoherent pile of crap as well. Like someone’s Sophomore year film project gone awry.

  28. tigger  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2005

TaTu? No, no. T&S are far better and it’s clear they write. The music is creaky, but if you’re in the mood for it… “Walking with the Ghost” is repetitive because it’s about being in a romantic routine – format based on the subject. Junior college stuff, but I respect a good attempt.

As to the video – so awkward. so cute.

    “everyone’s a little queer/ why can’t she be a litle straight.”

  29. angela moore  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2005

the song is not “out of my mind” it’s not that bad, it’s pretty alright actually. at least they’re triiing! what the fuck have you done lately???

  30. happy tee & essing  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2005

    i currently have a T&S obsession…

wait a sec did someone just compare them to BRITNEY………………..

as for the video, its kind of artistic and i like it

Tegan and Sara have such differing styles from album to album, but it’s great. I personally love “Walking With A Ghost” and think the album is different and fantastic. They aren’t a popular band here in the states by what the definition of popular music is here. They definitely aren’t like Britney. Of course, any good band or musician is going to have a group of people who will just hate on them, regardless of having a real reason or not.

  33. tegan n sara  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2005

okay….first of all tegan n sara r the best fuckign band around because every fucking song they write and/or record rocks the bedd second, they are fucking hotties and the funniest/coolest girls ever and third they are so differnt and real n shit they arent fucking birtey spears/TATU???????? peace

  34. i am new to the tegan and sara thing. i love walking with a ghost but the other songs are less catchy. i didn’t think i could like anything canadian except for some movies with sarah polley, some neil young songs, and sometimes i like metric.

  35. Panic  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2005

Their music isn’t my thing, but I’m still blown away that two girls from Calagry are doing such big things. I remember when I DJ’ed at the Uni radio station there, and they had just started playing gigs, they were something like 14. *sniff*sniff* I’m so proud. ;)

  36. Panic  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2005

Calgary even. Not like most people know where that is anyway. ;)

  37. btw, that comment about them “breaking up” was a little off…they’re twin sisters, y’all, not lovers. so don’t talk that TATU ish:)

  38. Hey you  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2005

    The Olsen twins broke up.

  39. Finally saw Tegan & Sara on Conan’s show, taped on VHS, ooooh, VHS!

    I was walking with a – ghost.
    I was walking with a – ghost.
    I was walking with a – ghost.
    (a capella) I was walking with a – ghost.

    And dammit, it was catchy!!

  40. they are rather cute.

  41. I know they are twins..if you are referring to my original comment. They in theory could “break up” as a band. I’m just saying…Angelina Jolie..Brad and Jen break-up reference … um nevermind ;)

  42. hold up… angelina jolie was at the nov tegan and sara concert?

    no way man.

  43. Chris  |   Posted on Jan 29th, 2005

I was introduced to them when they played Conan O’Brien’s show recently. I don’t know, I think they are pretty good.

Nice blog. Keep up the good work.

  44. lidge  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2005

Tegan and Sara rock. They are nothing like Tatu, people think that just because they’re gay, thy’re friggin sisters you morons! I’ve been a fan since there first album and love them to death.
Stop comparing them with those two talentless girls from Tatu, tegan and sara dont make a note that they are gay when they play and the fact they each have a girlfriend. as for walking with a ghost, get a clue, its a great sara song.

  45. Darth B  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2005

Look: I’m a metal head, but for some reason “Walking with a Ghost” is looped on iTunes for me. There’s just some sort of hook to it. Yes, it’s “poppy” and all, but I dig it. As for all their other stuff, i have no idea because I haven’t listened to it.

  46. up yours  |   Posted on Mar 14th, 2005

Tegan and Sara suck major balls….please stop ruining this decades rock.

  48. Becky  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007

To those who said negative things about Tegan and Sara:

If you’ve listened to a lot of their music and still don’t like it then that’s fin it’s your opinion and yuo’re entitled.

If you haven’t then SHUT UP DON’T JUDGE!

To those of you insulting them for no reason I think you’re pathetic and sad. Why bother posting immature responses? They’re really sweet and cute so pick on someone who isn’t a 5’2 girl! GROW SOME BALLS!

  49. tatiana  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2007

Cute? Oh my God where do you live in a quarantined place for fugly women who need to be lesbians by default since no guy would touch their ugly ass faces? They are lesbians by default because they are homely and some kids hurt them growing up. They are butch as hell so I don’t care if they are five foot two they are twice the size of me with their man like bodies and I am 5’6-5’7. Tegan and Sarah are obnoxious. What is wrong twith this generation under thirty? They hae obnoxious self-possessed personalities thinking they are worth something when they are not. They have NOTHING to offer. Not only are they physically ugly they are so boring and dead inside and they are wannabes. they are so fake with their obnoxious sarcastic attitudes. And the truth is they are so fake because they are coering up the fact that they are two geeky ladies who don’t want to face the truth about themseles so they try to sell you on their being cool but anyone with half a brain who looks at them has got to laugh and feel sorry for the funny looking duo and move on/ But americans are stupid particularly genys they buy any media hype they are fed and suddenly ugly women become cute. how pathetic. tegan and sarah you are on 14:56 of your 15c minutes of fame get off mtv because I don’t want to see your ugly faces and I don’t care what you think of music you have no taste.

  50. tatiana  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2007

And Becky I will say whateer I damn please when I damn please to. So SHUT UP YOU STUPID TW*T! From a Gorgeous Gen Xer Yeah!

  51. tatiana  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2007

The fACt of the matter is that we are dealing with the same generation that made slut and smut britney spears and cristina aguilera pop icons-Gen Y you have no taste. Face it and be happy with yourself despite your sleeziness. And may you marry eachother and no one from genx or any other generation who was afforded the opportunity to be born with a brain and discernment two factors you are lacking and will never have.

  52. doug  |   Posted on Dec 7th, 2007

    THEY SUCK PEOPLE
just because they have a “new” sound doesn’t mean it is revolutionary or good for that matter. Simple fact, they suck HARD, and they look like 12 year old boys.

  53. I really like Tegan and Sara.
They have a sound all to their own,
and it’s unique. One of the reasons
    I enjoy their music.

They do a really good job
    with their hairdos anyway.
I like it, and they never try
to be “in”. They are who they
are, and there’s no need to hate them.

It’s not like you know them personally, and like
they’re bitches and shit. NO. Actually, they are
both very sweet girls, and their sexual orientation
shouldn’t matter. What matters it the music: how they
play it, and why they play it.

They play it for themselves. Because they love
music. They don’t play the music to fit anyone’s mold
but their own, and how people fall in love with
their music, is because they understand the uniqueness
and intimacy a musician shares with the songs they write.

  54. Plan  |   Posted on Jan 4th, 2009

I first had the misfortune of hearing these two when I was searching for Weezer videos on Youtube, and nearly every search result returned these off-key, talentless little cunts mangling the band’s songs.

This is the type of shitty music that gets lauded in the music pages of alt weeklies, but no one actually listens to. I’m sure their live shows are nothing but gatherings for drama queens and jerk-offs participating in endless contests to see who’s more hip.
