It’s that special time of year when media outlets begin to dictate to you what albums you were supposed to enjoy this year. Dictate! Guess nobody told them live in a democracy, man. Earlier this month you chose the leader of the free world, you can handle choosing the year’s best albums. But how about also choosing the year’s best videos, songs, new acts, indie rock crushes, TV shows, movies, and viral videos?
Welcome to the annual Gummy Awards, and as always, the Stereogum and Videogum families invite you to play a plum role in determining which artworks and humans are remembered as 2012′s finest. This year we’re sweetening the pot by giving away an iPad With Retina Display (WiFi + Cellular, 32GB) to one lucky voter selected randomly. To enter, fill out the ballot below AND share your Best Album pick in the comments. This is real. Gummys The Voteā¢. Here we go:
Polls close on Wednesday 12/5 at 12 PM EST. Check out last year’s winners here.

Vid: Spiritualized – Hey Jane
Frank Ocean – Channel Orange
The Lumineers – The Lumineers
Lambchop- Mr. M
Ice Choir – Afar
And best video is M.I.A.’s Bad Girls by a mile! I hope people remember this one.
Yep, totally forgot about it when I voted :\ Clearly VOY though.
Grizzly Bear – Shields hands down
Fiona Apple of course
Album: Fiona Apple’s The Idler Wheel…
New Act: Purity Ring
Crushes: Mike Hadreas (Perfume Genius) & Iamamiwhoami (Jonna Lee)
Movie: The Imposter

Tame Impala-Lonerism
Cloud Nothings ā Attack On Memory
Lotus Plaza – Spooky Action at a Distance
Album: Grizzly Bear ā Shields
Song: Dirty Projectors ā “Gun Has No Trigger”
Video: Grimes ā “Oblivion” (for no other reason but nepotism for fellow Montrealers)
Crush: Dude: Andrew Bird, Girl: Annie Clark (does she win every year?)
Best New Act: Grimes (again out of nepotism. Would Divine Fits count in spite of Dan Boeckner and Britt Daniel being members of big/popular bands?)
Best Show: Mad Men
It’d be nice if Damien Rice put out one more album before the world ended
Ignored by most, but the my favorite album and the best live show I’ve seen in a while:
Dead Sara – Self Titled
Album: Tame Impala – Lonerism
Song: Grizzly Bear – Sleeping Ute
Video: Sufjan – Mr. Frosty Man
Also, couldn’t pick a new artist to be honest.
Crush: Annie Clark
Show: COMMUNITY.
Movie: Moonrise Kingdom
Best Coast – The Only Place
Sunufa-bish, there should be an Artist of the Year category! I’d give that to Kendrick Lamar for the sheer quality AND quantity of his output.
But my AOTY goes to Grimes’ Visions, with Circumambient as SOTY from that same album.
Strangely enough, Claire Boucher didn’t get indie crush. I serve only for Alexis Krauss.
Perfume Genius – Put Your Back N2 It
Album: Animal Collective – Centipede Hz
Song: Beach House – Wild
New Artist: Pinkunoizu
Movie: Moonrise Kingdom
Animal Collective – Centipede Hertz
Purity Ring – Shrines
Dirty Projectors-Swing Lo Magellan
David Byrne & St. Vincent – Love This Giant
You guys really should have a “No Pick” decision for the Best Viral Video category. Otherwise, the default selection is going to win.
Oh, and Frank Ocean all the way.
Trust – TRST
Loved that shit
A bunch of great alums this year, but for me it has to be Purity Ring’s Shrines at #1.
Torn between Killer Mike, R.A.P. Music and Kendric Lamar, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.
Basically, if you have a hip hop album with acronyms in the title, I’m in.
Beach House – Bloom
Cloud Nothings – Attack on Memory
Grizzly Bear – Shields
Tame Impala Lonerism!
Julia Holter – Ekstasis … so effing beautiful
Titus Andronicus – Local Business
Grizzly Bear – Shields
Grizzly Bear- Shields

Death Grips – The Money Store // NLDW
Album : Dirty Projectors – Swing Lo Magellan
Crush : Ruth Radelet from Chromatics
Santigold – Master of My Make-Believe
Islands – A Sleep & a Forgetting
Prince Rama – Top Ten Hits of the End of the World
(It was a tossup between that, Grimes, and Talk Normal)
Song – Icona Pop – I Love It
Video – MIA – Bad Girls
New Act – Charli XCX
Crush – Didn’t know if I should write Dee Dee or Kristen Gundred, so I went with Katy Goodman…
Show – Adventure Time
Movie – Moonrise Kingdom
Beach House-Bloom
Trust – TRST
Hop Along – Get Disowned
ALBUM: Idler Wheel by Fiona Apple
SONG: Bad Religion by Frank Ocean
SHOW: Louie
MOVIE: The Master
Cloud Nothings – Attack On Memory
I really hope nobody’s voting for Grimes for indie crush
Field Report – Field Report
Great album.
Anais Mitchell – Young Man in America
Not sure how much traction this received in music criticism circles, but it’s an indie-folk masterpiece.
Purity Ring-Shrines
Burial-Kindred
This was the easiest time I’ve had picking the album of the year in awhile.
Tame Impala’s Lonerism
Song of the year= “Pyramids” by Frank Ocean….
Alt-J – An Awesome Wave
Easy Peasy! Best and most original album was Django Django’s self titled debut.
LADYHAWK – no can do
(go british columbia!)
Grizzly Bear – Shields
Channel Orange.
and i have not seen a single one of the viral videos and wasnt willing to look them all up before voting.
Beach House – Bloom
Alt-J – An Awesome Wave
Gashcat – Reunion!
Julia Holter – Ekstasis .. so effing beautiful !
Grizzly Bear – Shields
A year is a long time. Attack on Memory is easily the album I’ve listened to and loved the most this year, but I’ve probably only listened to it two or three times since September. It ruled my Spring Semester and my summer though!
Regardless,
Cloud Nothings – Attack on Memory
Origiginal, it will never get old. Essential, it will never get old.
Black Moth Super Rainbow-Cobra Juicy
Tame Impala – Lonerism
Killer Mike — R.A.P. Music
Beach House-Bloom
The Killers – Battle Born
Frank Ocean – channel ORANGE
Gossamer?
Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel
Melody’s Echo Chamber – Melody’s Echo Chamber
Frank Ocean – Channel Orange
alt-J – “An Awesome Wave”
Laurel Halo – Quarantine
Ughh I’m getting the gross feeling that since so many people loved and ranted over the Frank Ocean album when it came out, it’s now “cool” to not talk about it/and generally pretend it didn’t happen.
I don’t think it’s “cool” to not talk about it (although the hype that record oozed everywhere was overwhelming), but rather, new things get released, and dwelling on one record leaves you unopened to new ones.
People, you should all wait till, say, midfebruary, before making conclusions! That’s what I respect Oscar for!
Grizzly bear-shields, with cloud nothings, lotus plaza and frank ocean close behind and the cribs had my fav british album of the year.
The Cribs – In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull
Japandroids – Celebration Rock
Swans – The Seer
Not even one GY!BE mention? I thought “Best album: ‘Allelujah” would be massive.
father john misty-fear fun
Alt-J’s ‘An Awesome Wave’ and Dirty Projectors’ ‘Swing Lo…’ were a mile ahead of everything else in my opinion (with Polica trailing in a distant third) but I’m going to have to listen to them both a couple more times tomorrow before making my final decision.
Tame Impala’s “Lonerism” best album
Album – Bloom
Song – Yet Again
Grimes – Visions
Toss up for me between Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse and Titus Andronicus’ Local Business. Going to go with Local Business.
Animal Collective – Centipede Hz
Father John Misty – Fear Fun
Iamamiwhoami- Kin
Good Kid Mad City
Tame Impala – Lonerism
I like instrumentalists, so Kaki King – Glow
