I guess I’ll go against the consensus here: I don’t really mind anything about them. As far as trends and the commercialization of a specific sound/genre go, this one is pretty harmless. I’ll take a bunch of 19th Century dressed faux folk heroes over most of the mind numbing dance music that all follows the same basic thumping structure that can put an unprepared listener into a state of comatose. I mean, as long as fun. exists, my ‘fuck these guys’ mentality will be focused elsewhere. |

In terms of artists getting paid, ease of access doesn’t matter as much as our lack of personal ownership toward musicians we like. The motivation to drink from a local brewery surely involves its superior taste. But it also involves feeling personally invested in a brand’s success. Buying local produce or buying from local bookstores might be (irritatingly) trendy but more so it’s a commitment to supporting institutions we value. Music shouldn’t be so different. Country fans take ownership of their artists. Country artists get paid. Rihanna’s Navy and Little Monsters take ownership of their artists. Rihanna and Gaga get paid. Even Christian hiphop’s Lecrae sells 100K of his releases because Christian culture understands that ministers have to be supported by their constituents. So much of independent music’s culture is based on hearing an albums just long enough to have an opinion of whether or not they belong on end-of-the-year Best-of lists. It’s a fun conversation to have every December. But that’s not a motivation artists can bank on. |

It seems like this is the commercial apex of a style that’s been increasingly popular just below the mainstream for quite some time now. At college towns across the nation for the past 5+ years there have been kids lounging on quads belting out “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show and starting pseudo-bluegrass combos at a pretty steady pace. I’m deeply ambivalent about the current popularity of this style — I think it’s bland, and at worse, only mildly offensive — but what really pisses me off is the old-timey aesthetic. Just because you own a mandolin doesn’t mean you have the right to dress like an extra from Back to the Future III. Remember, you’re actually not a blacksmith or a dapper woodsman or the proprietor of a sod-floored shoe cobbling shop, you’re just some asshole who can afford extremely impractical clothing. |

But the post title says the dog is “Sick.” Also, Pitchfork’s post title says it is “Dying.” I did not read all of Fiona’ babbling, but I’m assuming somewhere in there she talks about what disease the dog has that will ultimately end its life. I kinda just figured I’d give you all one last really good rabble rousing before year’s end, for old time’s sakes…
Who else is spending their holiday weekend working on their year-end album list?
there are so many albums I forgot came out this year. a lot of good muzak, for obvs. will kendrick or frank take the sweep?
Mumford and Sons latest album is definitely near the top for me.

Lists are hard! I started a blog this year, so I’m working on all my year end stuff. I have my #1 figured out, it’s just the order of all the other ones that’s troubling me.
Been reading yours over the past few days. It’s quite comprehensive and I thoroughly enjoy that you actually write instead of the many, many others who merely post a track or video, say a sentence and call it a day.
Not only is year-end stuff a grueling task, but so is being an effective blogger in general. There’s the need to update your site on a regular and timely basis, and if you work a full-time job, it can sometimes be a bit much work for one person to pull off well. I don’t know where my blogging future lies in 2013. Right now, I’m concentrated on getting the year-end lists done and taking December easy. It would be a nice place to end it, if anything. I would feel guilty for stepping away from the smaller bands I’ve been championing that have likewise supported my efforts or any momentum built over the past year, but there are more days than not recently when I come home from doing everything I have to do in “real” life, and I just think, “Ugh… I have to update the blog.” It used to be really fun, but nearly three years into doing it, that novelty has worn off. Plus, everyone has a blog so my absence won’t be felt I don’t think. I’d still like to write in a more casual sense — Perhaps a bigger blog that has an ensemble cast of part-time writers who send in work maybe once every two weeks or a month might want to have me.

First things: Thanks for checking out the blog. I’ll be honest, I only made one after I saw yours and thought “Hey, this is pretty cool”.
Second Things: It can be a pain sometimes just doing it so you remain active, but I still enjoy it. I’m a student, so I have plenty other things to keep up with. But even when it seems like it’s a pain to update, I do enjoy it. I don’t find things “Fun” anymore, but reviewing albums and talking about music kind of is…”fun”.
I’d love to take off time from regular material, but I’m kind of behind on stuff I really want to cover. So I need to get lists together while I do that. Plus I can’t really release an official list until a couple more albums have been released (I’m specifically waiting for Big Boi’s to drop…just in case).
The Friday Shuffle is a really cool idea. I rarely use the shuffle function on my ipod because but I think I might start now, have my own personal radio station

NOOOO! If it wasn’t for your blog I would never have heard “Of Everything I Will Soon Grow Tired”, which is definitely going on my year-end list.
And now I’ve checked out your blog. It’s working! But seriously, I’ve always liked the idea of using the shuffle to examine someones music library. The Onion used to do this Random Rules bit with famous people ipods but I haven’t seen it in a while. I’m pro shuffle.
My list have officially been set in stone. It was obviously a crazy good year in music, and when you start adding it all up together, you realize how little space you have left on your list. I contemplated making this year’s list bigger, but at the end of the day, I decided that my rules are rules: 25 albums. Nothing more, and no exceptions. I know Beach House and Godspeed You! made some very nice albums, but I just couldn’t fit them in with the other albums that really piqued my interest in a more interesting way.

I like how you handled the Ty Segall dilemma. I’m going to end up siding with “Slaughterhouse” but I thoroughly enjoyed “Hair” and “Twins” pretty equally.
The moment I’d start wearing out one, he’d just drop a new one. Ty Segall deserves high praise this year for those three albums alone. Honorable Mention for sure.
