20. Full Force Galesburg (1997)

So often in the Mountain Goats' discography, you'll have characters declaring what they know. Such is the earnestness of Darnielle's delivery that there's rarely reason to doubt them, especially when paired with enough propulsion to make NASA envious. Opener "New Britain" is a prime example, with a narrator that can't reach or be understood by his lover, but just doesn't give a shit. But lo! The same person crops up two songs later, suddenly shaken: "I know who I am," he mutters, "and I know who you are/Or who you were just an hour ago..." An often-overlooked entry in the catalog, Full Force Galesburg is notable for two guest spots from future Goat Peter Hughes (at the time still a member of Nothing Painted Blue) and two from a re-upped Alastair Galbraith on violin.
