Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is one of the all-time great cheesed-out holiday songs, but it’s got a simple, heart-heavy longing at its core, and so maybe it’s not such a shock that the xx would consider it worthy cover material. At a recent session in BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge, the xx recorded a characteristically stripped-back, murmuring version of the song, and even though it’s live-in-studio, it sounds like Jamie xx might’ve spent weeks working on the mix. Listen to it below.
Now that I think about it, an xx George Michael cover album would probably be the best thing ever. An xx “Father Figure”? Dude.

Ugh, their shtick is so tired now. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….
Indeed. The first album was a good exercise in subtlety and mood. It isn’t a classic, but it’s a solid record that grows on you with each listen. Coexist is not quite as rough a sophomore slump as, say, Second Coming, but no denying this is bland as fuck… They’ve decided to do nothing new, nothing innovative, nothing that can compete with anything else in its genre. ‘Chained’ is not bad, though.
the forced whispery vocals are cringeworthy
this has been my problem with them since jumpstreet
As well as titles. ‘Our Song’, really?
Yawn.
Mmeerrrryy xx-mmaass
They’re still doing this same old shtick? I don’t understand why people like this “band”. Bunch of pale sadsacks who mopingly whisper because they can’t sing worth a damn, with some flimsy beat in the background. And then we defend lack of good musical ideas as “minimalism”.
Umm…I liked it…
Yea me 2! Don’t tomatoes our way please..haha
i meant 2 add a ‘throw’ in there..haha
I went into this thinking it was going to suck because all these xx haters managed to make their way to this post and slam them. This is a good cover.
WTF???
