And we’re back. It’s the first Shut Up, Dude of the year, and the first post of the day because something happened to our server last night. I don’t know what, exactly, but we looked into the node rebuild status (?) and things are stable again. Thanks for bearing with us. Anyway. Earlier this week we surveyed the year in comebacks, the creative potential of domestic bliss, and the economic plight of the working musician. We heard new tunes from AlunaGeorge, Local Natives, and Skrillex. We played d-J with alt-J. And we met Kanyeti. I know some of you made resolutions to write wittier comments in 2013. You can start below…

#17 guys? Really? I find it hard to believe there were only 16 comments better than mine and even more difficult to believe that Donnytilla was let down so badly. He truly is the Perfume Genius of Stereogum commenters. |

Another genius of our lifetime… … I can tell ya who what when where how Wonderful, beautiful poetry… I strongly urge Stereogum to launch another spin-off site (a-la Videogum) for this inane ghetto trite. You may consider this for metal (and loud stuff in general, like on AV Club) too, it’s a niche genre as well. Thanks in advance. |

There won’t be another Michael_ Coachella article this year?
This year already sucks.
2013 begins with Joe Howse having the #1 comment of the first Shut Up, Dude this year.
That is clearly a good omen.

It sounds like things are right where they should be to start the year off with me nabbing the first worst comment of the year. : \
As a consolation prize for an unlikely consecutive Coachella guest post, I can at least offer this up (again, since it was buried in one of the posts last week) — Me as a little dude jammin’ on the drums to “Into the Groove” (quick before Warner Bros. removes it again!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSa5xIv8M5c
I caught that video when you posted it last.
Is that really you on the drums? Like a young Josh Freese.
Madonna = older cousin who I barely talk to or ever see and has no idea she’s now on YouTube
Guitarist = her kinda butch high school friend
Keys = my brother looking like some sort of Paul Shaffer / Wes Eisold bastardization
Drums = me at 4 yrs old
I was about to optomistically ask was it a ‘family band’ and I’m so glad it kind of is.
Well this is spectacular. Especially like how ‘Into’ and ‘Groove’ are censored(?) in the title of the video.
The nice thing about Stereogum being down is that my day was much more productive.
I kid. I just spent a lot more time staring at error screens and sighing heavily.
At least the page stopped loading twice. That’s what they were fixing maybe?
I don’t think I was awake for that bit, West Coast time and whatnot. I just had a few hours of Chrome’s error screens and an upset baby telling me not to fret.
The page was loading twice before it went down. I saw the baby too. I kept thinking that baby was sicking its arm in a toaster.
My boss is very appreciative of the whole thing and requests that this happen every day.
JOE HOWSE STRAIGHT KILLIN IT
That’s a lot of thumbs…
If we could give you hearts, we would.
U get hacked bro?
So I met Taylor Swift and something kind of interesting happened….

Happy avoidance of the “Stereogum Scare of Early ’13″ y’all
And for the second time this week, I wept.
This time, for joy.
Or something.
We are in the presence of greatness.
It’s my debut on the chart. Still, no one competes with Joe Howse. Too nice.
Nice way to start off the year with three slots in. Time to celebrate…

Is there anything you do like?
probably…? if we talk about music, it’s generally classic funk, soul and r&b (not just the obvious classic stuff, of course – just digging some rare compilations and so on, so many brilliant songs); not fan of typical guitar indie rock (bar a few classic records – Doolittle, Unknown Pleasures, some Smiths and so on). Big fan of pop music and see nothign wrong with it (not in ironical and guilty pleasure way – I just enjoy it). Absolutely don’t listen to hip-hop, loud stuff (metal, hardcore, hard rock, prog) and jazz (I’ve tried maybe 30 or 40 times – don’t get it in any way).
As for the Daily Show and Colbert Report, I just don’t like its pretentiousness and circlejerk nature. Like reddit r/politics subreddit.
son, back in my day we liked our pop music ironically.
kids…
hey cat, i’ve given it some careful thought and i think i’ve got a good introduction to hip-hop for ya:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSmKuVSocN8
That’s cool. I agree with you on the irony thing. I hate it when people assume that I enjoy the pop or “ignorant” rap that I listen to “ironically”. That whole idea is so stupid to me. There’s no thought process in the way I enjoy that music, it just grabs me at the gut and makes me want to move or shout along. There’s isn’t any room for irony in there at all.
I just think that the best way for us to have fun discussions about music here is for us to talk about the things that we ARE interested in and passionate about, and not go into certain threads and attack the music that we don’t listen to or understand.
No one listens to music ironically. Grow up, Peter Pan.
Well I guess Angel Haze isn’t the only one looking for beef this week…
There’s not the problem that I can’t fix, and I can do it in the mix! :D in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix… in the mix…
baby, you can do it, take your TIME, do it RIGHT, yo ucan do it BA-BY, do it TO-NIGHT!..
feel good.

Hi copy_paster_cat,
Breaking into the Stereogum comment section isn’t easy for everyone and everyone isn’t against you, despite the downvotes. I’m all too familiar — Just look at who has the worst comment of the week. It isn’t my first time and probably won’t be my last. Here’s a few hints that will help make it more enjoyable for you and everyone else:
- You may be right about your opinion in your own way, but when you walk into a post about a musician or genre you have already written off, you’re not going to win any battles against its supporters. If you want to “troll” up resentment from others, then go right ahead, but you just can’t act surprised or upset when you see a thumbs way down in the red. Stick to the material you like or find interesting in a good way.
- Getting into the week’s worst comments is sometimes more rewarding than getting into the best comments if the statement you made are well thought-out, and not just some spew of antagonism or one liner intended to conjure up anger. It kind of contradicts what I said above, but what I’m saying is that if you made the effort to give a song or musician an honest try, list specific examples as to what you find to be flawed with it and air that opinion to a round of downvotes, take that as you doing a good job at playing Devil’s Advocate rather than following the sheep. No one should be expected to life everything that everyone else likes. That’s idiotic.
- From my personal experience, I sometimes will write something at the same time as I’m irritated with something else beyond Stereogum, and I come out sounding like a dumbo, but whatever, FIDLAR.
- A lot of the commenters here who say nice things and don’t care about the downvote game are attractive people. A lot of the commenters who will stalk you with downvotes just because are weird and unhappy with themselves in real life.
I could not agree more with the second point. Probably my most rewarding week was when I nabbed two of the five bottom spots for passionately making a case for how much Alice in Chains sucks (update: they still do) and also nabbed an editors choice (http://stereogum.com/1164522/shut-up-dude-this-weeks-best-and-worst-comments-48/franchises/shut-up-dude/).
For me, it’s all about honesty, I agree with Michael_ to the extent that if you’re gonna bash a band you don’t like, you better have a pretty well articulated argument for why they suck.
great points. as someone who has gotten into the bottom for making dumb comments that i thought were “witty(i.e. dumb),” I can attest to the point that a well formed argument, no matter the opinion, will not be swamped with downvotes. You may get a few, but not a ridiculous amount, because they will respect your argument, and also because trolls don’t like to read anything too long. they have short attention spans. trust me, I’ve been there.
- WHHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT
I picked up Lonerism on vinyl yesterday.

Great, I finally got into that album too recently. Must be nice to live in a first world country… Buy physical music, going to gigs… There is not even a single record shop in my Russian shithole lol. Well you can buy some VA ccompilations of Russian pop music at electronic retailers (such as Best Buy in the US) but that’s it. Online delivery is still too expensive. Maybe that’s why I’m so irritated.
