Today’s David Bowie’s 66th birthday(!), and he’s got a birthday gift for all of us. This is not the usual flow of birthday gifting, but as they say, you do not look a gift David Bowie in the mouth: It is 1/8/13, and the artist formerly known as Stardust is releasing a dramatic new ballad, and its video, and news of a full-length due in March. The record’s called The Next Day, a 14-track effort recorded in NYC and produced by longtime Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti. The fact that Visconti worked on Bowie’s Berlin trilogy (Low, “Heroes”, Lodger ) seems relevant to “Where Are We Now?” and its video, which is littered with lyrical references to the city, and footage “of the auto repair shop beneath the apartment he lived in along with stark images of the city at the time.” Visconti was also the producer who helmed Bowie’s last few records, 2002′s Heathen and 2003′s Reality, so it’s as much a throwback to a classic era as it is picking up where he left off. This is David’s first record in 10 years, and his 30th record overall. It’s OK to celebrate.

Probably in the minority here, but my memories of growing up with Bowie aren’t of the innovative glam rock star who is screenprinted across Hot Topic t-shirts today, and instead that of the not so remarkable years where he played alongside alt-adult contemporary radio artists like Annie Lennox and Moby. I appreciate the dude’s early legacy, am neither a fan nor foe of his work, but like the Rolling Stones in 2013, his return isn’t entirely necessary judging by what sounds like an inoffensive new single that neither breaks new ground nor tarnishes his career nostalgia.
That said, everyone leave this post and find the Iceage track if you want to hear something new.

I don’t think it’s fair to lump the albums from Black Tie White Noise on with the ’80s stuff. The ’90s/’00s albums certainly aren’t on the level of his ’70s albums but there’s some really good stuff on them.

I kinda enjoy Let’s Dance. It’s fun, and “Modern Love” and “Cat People” are solid tracks, even if they don’t reach the levels of “Sound and Vision” or “Starman.”

Secondly, I’ve never seen David Bowie live. I received the news of (A) his birthday and (B) the new album last night, right after midnight. We just finished up this week’s episode and I flipped the fuck out and pulled all my Bowie records and went on a journey through 70′s Bowie.
I think (I was drinking {lots}) I started with Side A of “Diamond Dogs” and then went to Side B of Ziggy… I know I eventually got around to Side A of “Aladdin Sane” (my all time favorite Bowie) and of course Side A from “The Man Who Sold The World” and so on and so on.
I became a HUGE David Bowie fan after I finished listening to all of his 70s albums. Honestly, the most recent Bowie album I’ve heard is “Scary Monsters”. So maybe that has something to do with it that I’ve only digested what is considered The Best Bowie (even though I’ve heard “Heathen” and “Reality” are good? Did I Hear that? I can’t be for sure).
Michael_’s comment is insightful because I did not grow up with David Bowie post 1985. I think the only time I recall encountering him was when he was chasing Trent Reznor in the “I’m Afraid of Americans” video, a song that I would later hear performed at NIN’s Wave Goodbye show (at Terminal 5) and have a crowd surfer fall into my arm and dislocate my shoulder for about 10 seconds (I popped it back in; lanky skills {true story})
SO I can totally understand how this new song, new album, isn’t exactly enthusing the masses. Try to look at it my way, and really, the only way any of us should be heralding this news:

Didn’t the Guardian UK’s article regarding the news have a statement from Bowie’s camp that he had no plans to tour around this release? I’m not sure if that is all-inclusive to no live shows whatsoever, but I took it as that.
Eh, maybe not. But even Nile Rogers said Daft Punk wouldn’t tour on their new release.
Hell, it may not be this year, but in my opinion the odds just became odds. Insofar that if there was ever a sign that David Bowie would tour, again, ever. This is it.
I highly (read: extremely) doubt he’ll headline any festivals in 2013. Seeing as how this new album was a complete surprise, I feel like a live tour may be a surprise he’s holding onto for 2014.

Crazy. Out of nowhere Bowie drops a new single, video and pre-sale for a 14-17 song album. Wish it was done that way more often, although he’s still been gone too long.
Anyway, I like the song, but don’t LOVE it. Seems a bit of an odd choice for a song to announce your first album in ten years with. Maybe the album as a whole will be leaning more towards this style, or be about reminiscing. I’d like to hear this song in the context of the entire album, anyway.
Yeah I’m with you Cerebus. Seeing as how it is track 5 on the album I bet it makes more sense in the flow of the LP.

I think “Diamond Dogs” is the best and most underrated Bowie record. The most unchained and unhinged in a demented prog rock musical theater kind of way. Seems to be one that nobody talks about, though. I think it’s the only one produced by him and he played a lot of the instruments on it as well.

Side A is absolute perfection. “Future Legend” into “Diamond Dogs” and then what I consider to be one of Bowie’s most enjoyable and impressive combo of songs: The “Sweet Thing” suite complete with “Candidate” and the reprise.
And then Side B has them singles, but one of Bowie’s greatest musical accomplishments (IMO) is the “Sweet Thing” Suite. Suite Thing.

I can’t believe people aren’t realizing the reason for the cover. “We can be Heroes for just one day” then this album is called The Next Day. There’s some kind of thematic link, obviously.
I know I’m like years late on responding to this but I just wanted to say I think this track is wonderful. It starts off as a pretty nice ballad then towards the end of the song things being to sound more epic as it builds up. I’m really looking forward for his new album.
