In 2006, the producer Hal Willner put together the compilation Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, on which big-name artists tried their hand at singing old pirate songs. Next month, we’ll get the double-disc sequel, entitled Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys. The list of contributors is long and distinguished, and it includes Johnny Depp, Patti Smith, Michael Stipe, Shane MacGowan, Iggy Pop, Michael Gira, Nick Cave, and Courtney Love. Even with all those people involved, though, the biggest news might be a collaboration between Tom Waits and Keith Richards, who previously worked together on Waits’ 2011 album Bad As Me. Together, they worked up a gravelly, sloppy take on the old ballad “Shenandoah,” and you can hear it at NPR.
Son Of Rogue’s Gallery is out 2/19 on Anti-.

a day which also remarkably appears to coincide with day of boring narrow minded kids making ageist comments like “old fart” to dismiss anyone who doesn’t fit in with their idea of what music should be on gum… also… GET OFF MY LAWN!!!
I’m not on your lawn, I’m not even from America
I’m from Surgut, Russia. google. it’s a siberian oil shithole
Do Not Fuck With Tom Waits
Yeah, yeah, I know, he’s an another sacred cow…
Nah, he isn’t. He’s just a very good artist. You don’t like him/his music? Fair enough. Trying to rile up people by insulting him is just sad though. Surely you have something better to do than being an asshole to strangers on the Internet and, if you don’t, there are more effective ways to do so.
Betcha can’t wait till Kendrick Lamar jumps on the remix. “Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you, bitch”
No, I’m not interested in anything Tom Waits or Kendrick Lamar are doing.
Wait, really? You don’t like Kendrick Lamar? Why didn’t you say something sooner, man? Like, maybe in every Stereogum comment section ever?
I hate this kind of music and I’m free to express my opinion.
No, you’re right, you’re free to express your opinion. But, you’re also free to not click on the fucking articles and spew hate in the comments if you already know you don’t like the artists or the kind of music. So maybe grow up and spend more time commenting on the articles about stuff you DO like?
So waht’s the point of comment section then? Just another circlejerk…
“what’s the point of the comment section if not to spew hate?” said copy_paster_cat as he wondered why everyone finds his comments so distasteful
Waits and Richards also worked together on Rain Dogs, by the by
and on ‘Bone Machine’
I actually enjoyed this. Not sure that it counts as a pirate ballad or sea song, but any time Tom Waits does his magic on an old folk standard is a win for me.
Tom Waits doing his magic = Louis Armstrong running out of batteries.
Stereogum neglected to mention that it was beautiful.
