
The melodically-inclined Tampa punk trio Merchandise had a big year last year, largely on the strength of their murky, glowering Children Of Desire album. We won’t have to wait long for the follow-up; a new album called Totale Night is already set for a spring release. And the first song we’ve heard from it is an expansive seven-minute zone-out called “Anxiety’s Door,” which has more Echo & The Bunnymen than Joy Division in its DNA. Listen below.

Picks up right where they left for the most part — Spot on with the Echo influence (which I guess sets them up to play some dates with Cult of Youth whenever they’re in NYC or whatever.)
Maybe I wasn’t paying attention enough last year, but this first week of new album announcements has overwhelmed me. That’s a good start to 2013.
