Every year, the Village Voice polls a shit-ton of music critics, ex-critics, part-timers, and bloggers for its annual Pazz & Jop music critics’ poll, soliciting top-10 lists of albums and singles. The poll isn’t as big a deal as it once was, since every publication has already run a list and since the Voice has fired or chased away virtually every prominent and respected critic who’s written for it in the past few years. (Seriously, as a past employee of that place, it feels like a fresh wound reopening every time they shitcan one of my friends, and that practice probably has something to do with how many critics’ names you won’t see under the ballot listings.) But it’s still a huge and comprehensive (though largely surprise-free) list, and it’s still fun to dive into the master lists and the individual ballots. Some good essays in there this year, too. Kudos to Claire with Children of the Night being on her ballot. Great mixtape. Anyway, I’ve never really paid attention to the Pazz & Jop polls until last year when tUnE-yArDs grabbed the number one spot, and I felt like people out there in the world finally understood me,.
Last year? o wait it’s 2013. Damn I still need to get used to that.

The depressing and humbling realization now sinks in that you’ve accomplished more than I have by the time you reached 30 (which I’m assuming was a birthday not too, too long ago) than I probably will, and that I have t-minus one week to come close to your accolades of reshaping the Internet with an influential music news resource, make a bunch of important industry ins, strike a multi-million dollar partnership / sale so I and my potential offspring never have punch the clock again is enough to make me want to force open this office window next to me and make my mark (on the pavement.)

I thought Fiona would nail it at least here but alas… Surprised that Swans at number seven – for such an experimental and left field record thisis way to high though maybe some critics just chose it as token ‘out there’ album? As always, Top 40 song at number one of singles list. By the way, my favorite run of number ones is from 1997 to 2004, just look at this! Banger after banger:
