Orion Festival

Last year, Metallica curated the surprisingly indie-heavy first installment of their Orion Festival, and they’ve just announced that the second of the festivals will come to Detroit’s Bell Isle 6/8-9. Metallica will once again headline, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers serving as co-headliners. And this year’s initial lineup is just as confusing as last year’s. I guess it’s not all that surprising that Metallica would book a ton of nu-dubstep (Bassnectar, Borgore, 12th Planet), but I wouldn’t have predicted it. There’s also a bit of brutal but adventurous rock (Deftones, Tomahawk, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Death Grips, Fu Manchu) and some big-tent alt-rock and indie (Rise Against, Dropkick Murphys, Silversun Pickups, Foals, Japandroids, Fidlar, locals Death and the Dirtbombs). And I’m very curious what a Metallica crowd will make of the Black Flag reunion project FLAG. There’s still more lineup to come, but for now, check here for the full details.

  1. What will a Metallica crowd make of FLAG? More like “What will an alt-indie-punk rock crowd make of Metallica?”

  2. also: the bronx will play

speaking of which: we need some serious bronx coverage up in this bitch
