Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle might be the single greatest talker in all of indie rock; as much as I love Mountain Goats songs, I’ve found myself at live shows, wishing they would end so that he could return to the stage patter. And as anyone who’s ever listened to The Sunset Tree or heard Darnielle drop the world “heroin” into casual conversation can attest, he is also a man with a harrowing and fascinating past. All of that means that he’s an ideal guest for WTF, the podcast on which comedian Marc Maron expertly dissects his guest’s biographies and neuroses. You guys. This conversation is fascinating. One of the best WTFs I’ve ever heard, and one of the best John Darnielle interviews ever. If you have an hour or so to spare, and you like the Mountain Goats at least a little bit, this is really worth your time.
