Smith Westerns - "Varsity"

It’s been a couple of years since Chicago glam-rock brats Smith Westerns gave us their breakout sophomore album Dye It Blonde, and they’ll follow it up this summer with their new LP Soft Will. The trio recorded the album in New York and El Paso, working once again with Dye It Blonde producer (and sharp-as-hell indie craftsman) Chris Coady. First single “Varsity” sounds like another big leap forward for the band: A lush and expansive synth-streaked jam that still keeps its emphasis very much on big windows-down melodies. Listen to it below.

Soft Will is out 6/11 on Mom + Pop.

  1. Almost too good! June is a long way away…

  2. Glam rock? If memory serves correct, Dye It Blonde was more Beach Boys than Bowie.

    • What album did you listen to? T. Rex, Ziggy Stardust and Mott the Hoople were all over that thing.

    • No way. Glam, glam, glam. I also would have accepted “Brit pop.” But Beach Boys? Nuh-uh.

    • Whoops, I was thinking of — what’s that other band that came out around the same time as them… You know, the one with the guy who beat his girlfriend?

      *Google checks*

      SURFER BLOOD.

  3. This rules. Smith Westerns forever.
