Yesterday’s MSNBC Cosmic Log dealt with “earworm activity in the auditory cortex” (i.e., why you can’t get that fucking song out of your head.)

Here are the latest standings in the accompanying online poll:

Of course it’s not scientific — it doesn’t include “Since U Been Gone”! But I like that the Chili’s jingle is in there.

What’s stuck in your head this week?

  1. That new Coldplay song “Talk” that I got off that link you posted…shortly before it was removed from existence. I’ve been playing the shit out of that song! Damn, it’s addictive!!

  2. it’s not stuck in my head because i don’t listen to it, but extensive radio play of green day’s “boulevard” and 50 cent’s “candy” can be extremely annoying.

Guy Bommartio wrote the “Baby Back” song while working at GSD&M, Chili’s ad agency. It appears that like he owns the rights to the song. I cracked up when I saw his name in the credits of Austin Powers.

    Aruba, Jamaica. . . .

not a minute later that damn Beach Boys, Kokomo song is burrowed deep into their heads.

During the holidays, it’s that annoying Paul McCartney song “A Wonderful Christmas Time”.

    True Faith by New Order.

I used to think that the day would never come
I’d see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun…

  27. The ‘Can’t get it out of my head!’ #1 song is ‘Karma Chameleon’ by Culture Club. You WILL sing it for days. My friend and I would sing it near people just to see how long it took them to start singing it to themselves. It’s a virus.

You can’t stop it, it owns you.

Otherwise, that fucking Green Day song is this week’s runner up.

I can’t believe they didn’t have “Funky Town” on that list. whenever I hear it, or think about it its there for at least 4 hours. That and “Yellow Submarine” by the Beatles

  31. Werd  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2005

Oh wow…I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned all ready. It’s lethal…

    “Here in my car
    Where the image breaks down
    Will you visit me please?
    If I open my door
    In cars”

  32. The Jerk It Out iPod Shuffle song

  33. Marie  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2005

Everytime anyone even mentions the Grateful Dead I get “Touch of Grey” stuck in my head for hours and hours. I hate those stupid keyboards.

  34. I’ve been getting the strangest songs stuck in the ole melon lately! Kylie Minogue “I just can’t get you outta my head…” UGH!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!
The “Karma Chameleon” thing – that’s what my husband starts singing if I tell him I’ve got some other song on the brain.
I also caught myself singing Loverboy “Take me to the Top” the other day – now there’s an obscure ’80s song for ya!

  35. Mary-Elizabeth Vaquer  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2005

Since I was a child I’ve had problems keeping “Down in the Boondox” out of my head. There it goes again.

Since U Been Gone is such a guilty pleasure, Kelly Thingy wasn’t even good enough to be allowed to release anymore after her 1st single here in the UK, but I’m still addicted to that damn song, kill me now.

  40. xmasonmars  |   Posted on Mar 12th, 2005

That damn Darius Rucker Burger King song. It makes me want to jump off the big rock candy mountain and splatter into a vat of barbecue sauce.

  41. for some reason i always get “build me up buttercup” stuck in my head in the shower.

  42. 1.) “I was walking with the ghost.

I was walking with the ghost.”
(Tegan and Sara… I like the song but it’s an earworm for sure.)

2.) The whistled theme music to Mayberry RFD. (Or was it ‘The Andy Griffith Show’? Who cares, just try getting that tune out of your head.)

I just can’t get you out of my head
Boy your loving is all I think about
I just can’t get you out of my head
Boy it’s more than I dare to think about
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la

I’ve been singing that song for 3 years now. Funny thing is that it’s not even beginning to get old. I love hotsie Australian pop divas! Oh yeah and “Goodies” from Ciara. That one gets stuck in my freaking head all the damn time…
