If you visited here Wednesday afternoon you saw all the post copy on the site replaced with 0s. That was not intentional. It was a malware attack. We’ve since fixed it, but had to disable comment voting (the plugin has known vulnerabilities we need to patch up). So this week’s Shut Up, Dude rankings are based on scores earned Friday to Wednesday. Better than no Shut Up, Dude. Hopefully everything will be back to normal in a few days. Thanks for bearing with us. Here are this weeks winners and losers, pretty much…
THIS WEEK’S 10 HIGHEST RATED COMMENTS

Oh god, here come the Weezy haters. It’s debatable whether Wayne was the best rapper of his generation, but he’s changed the rap game in undeniable ways. He really was the biggest reason mixtapes have become so popular, and certainly the first to prove that mixtape hype could translate into sales for the studio album he was trying to promote. |

they’re not vampires man. they’re people. you really think vampires could be out in the day all the time? i’m pretty sure i’ve seen vids of them in the daytime so they def can’t be vampires. bet you think all vamps are like the ones from twilight lol. if they were really vamps they wouldn’t sparkle, they’d die so they’re def not vampires. pretty sure they’re people. i think they just call the band vampire weekend, but I guess it could mean they’re vampires. if they were though, i don’t think they could go out in the daytime though cause vamps usually can’t do that. so pretty much, i don’t really think they are really vampires. |

WHOOOOOO if it’s gonna be that kinda party, i can’t HELP but stick my donny in the mashed pa’tay-tas. Well, you did it again K-brobro. Last week’s poem was going to be my goodbye kiss kiss to commenting but, as they say, “you can’t keep the ‘rrhea from the call of the bowl.” missed u all. I….. I just…… you guys. Full disclosure: strokes are one of, if not THE favourite band of papa tilla over the ’00′s. So, I’m biased. But, full disclosure, I am not a robot. Let me tell you a story. So doubledonnyD decided to put some room on fire on in the muthafuxxin whip today. Wow, what a blast from the past. Really missed it. But you know what, found myself blowin right through the middle third (OBVS THATS WHAT SHE SAID. OBVS.). You talk 2 mush, b/w luv n’ hate, meet me in the b-room – I’m skipping those shits most times. Why? idk. I love them, but the other licks are too good to deny when I know they’re only a click away. I love ROF though, so what does this mean? It means that sometimes the major hitters take away from the quiet guys, and that’s okay. sidenote, ROF is my second fav strokes album (OBVS) HOWEVER, I think the major players are better or at least more fun than a lot of is this it – I said it. I stand by it. Is this it being my fav as well. Now, FIOE was the epitome of skipping the hell out of most of it for the hits. I haven’t even heard half of that album and I own it. I can’t even name the tracklist. It’s like the maladroit to my blue album and pinkerton. true say. It’s like, “yeah, I’ll listen to ‘Slob,’ I’ll listen to ‘Fall Together,’ uuuhhhh maybe ‘keep fishin,’ but the rest of those shits are like brown on a toilet seat” = They’re there and I’m not about to touch them. Now angles was like a angel to me. I still think that’s a pretty solid album, especially considering the well-known clusterturd that surrounded it’s creation and the aftermath. I listen to move of those jams, and on the regular. Some solid licks, a new direction. Definitely dece. So when one way trigger came out, my one way trigger came out. literally. I just was excited guys. It was the blend of everything I had ever wanted. All the Time I thought was junk until this week – now I give it the love it truly deserves. But I was nervous. Like, real nervous. I’m so goddamn excited about this album. Honestly I’m too pantaloon jazzed right now to give an honest opinion but I’m crazy out of control right now with comparisons to past work. First off, it’s just so much more interesting than past output, but not like the red album trainwreck barnyard AWFULNESS. No, it’s different while pulling together all of the best features of their past work. Every song has some switch up that makes me go “oh, that’s your girl? do it. do it. boi” but like in the best way possible. This is just a fucking JOY of an album to listen to. I can’t pick out a favourite yet but these guys must have licks and choruses coming out of their backdoors and fallin right into the pot. I could listen to a million of this kind of strokes album. U2 and shit, but not awful. The problem is going to be the reviews. Sheffeld must have IBS or something because that review made no sense. How can you fault a band for moving into new territory and knocking that shit out of the park? I don’t want another is this it. God no. This is where these Ma’s should be. P4k is going to tear it apart. Those assholes didn’t even review all the time. But, that’s fine with papa D. They don’t run the world. Girls. Wait, what? tl;dr fuck p4k for saying these guys should break up in the angels review. SUCH a stereotyp’ p4k move. |

Morrissey? More like Lessissey.
Thanks, I’m glad that one of my legion Morrissey puns worked, for one person at least. I’m just here to practice my punning, after all.
more like practice your PUNning, amiright? …(?) #?pun
The “Less is Morrissey” last week was better in my opinion, but puns are nice :)
How will next week’s best and worst comments work if we can’t vote anymore? I guess I’ll start fasting until Stereogum fixes this.
I feel like I’m reading the comment section through a cloud of fog without having rankings. But maybe it is really that the fog has at last parted, and my eyes are truly free…
VALIDATION AT LAST
D-Tits was robbed. And since simply typing that for upvotes isn’t even possible right now, let me just type at random, eh?
No offense Levi, great comment, great analysis of Stereogum patterns. Bravo!
But a block of text of that size from the donniest of tillyas so close to the #1 slot, nay, TIED with the #1 slot feels like a slight. I’ll compromise and blame the malware attackers for this issue.
However, this is Stereogum. We argue about album placement in the Countdown articles, so why not here too?? COMPLAINTS!!!
Really though, not having upvotes and downvotes is actually neat??? Fuck, I guess I can take a stance since there is no voting: I LIKE NOT HAVING UPVOTES / DOWNVOTES. Sure, it ruins Shut Up, Dude — my favorite part of Stereogum… but can’t we find the silver linings playbook and just say, “HEY! everyone is equal now!! (?)”
Sure why not a block of my favorite quotes from the #1 comment!
” but, as they say, “you can’t keep the ‘rrhea from the call of the bowl.” ”
“So doubledonnyD decided to put some room on fire on in the muthafuxxin whip today.”
“considering the well-known clusterturd that surrounded it’s creation”
“Honestly I’m too pantaloon jazzed right now to give an honest opinion”
” How can you fault a band for moving into new territory and knocking that shit out of the park?”
tl;dr no voting system is FUN!
p.s. have a great weekend everybody. oh shit, i should find a picture too? just to be fully 100% obnoxious…. oh! Spring Breakers!!! I saw it, you should too. If you like tits. and you do like tits. cuz you love d-tits.
the.end.
going to see Spring Breakers next week. I’m excited.
Nice! Tell me what ya thought. Spriiiiiing Breeakkk Fooooeeevvvaaahhhh
Just to insert myself into this conversation, I’ll say that I loved Spring Breakers. Favorite movie I’ve seen since Drive, and I might even say I like it better. It’s rare for a movie to be everything I want it to be and leave me with no disappointments. Based on the trailer, I was really looking forward to this movie as a primarily visual experience, and it really delivered, especially with those neon looking scenes at the end. Both in visuals and sound, it reminds me somewhat of the movie Diva (1981) and that French “Cinema du look” movement in the ’80s. Come to think of it, I should probably check out more movies from that movement, because I’d probably love them.
The cinematography was just astounding (although my friend complained about the grainy quality of some scenes). The early robbery scene, the obviously voyeuristic quality of the camera when it dips beneath the water at one point when they’re in the pool, and most of all the upside-down shot (I’m a sucker for those) were some of the most memorable parts of the movie for me. I won’t go into a “What the movie was trying to say” discussion, though, because I don’t really care. I just loved the immediate experience.
It was like the movie embodied the sort of subconscious feelings I get when I listen to jj’s song “Ecstasy,” which would have fit perfectly in this movie. So I guess my one complaint is that they should have included “Ecstasy” in this movie. But the soundtrack is pretty great as it is.
Saw yr comment in the Korine interview post, but I’ll just reply here.
(spoiler alert?)
Firstly: I think “Ecstasy” in that movie would have been amazing. GOOD call pointing that out. I’m probably going to watch it again after work this week.
I loved how he had the two dip into pool scenes. The one earlier when it’s just the two blondes and miss. gomez in their bikinis. Then later in the movie Selena is replace by Alien… and they’re now all naked. Not to mention that first scene found Selena fantasizing about that feeling they had in Miami lasting forever like a picture… then you have the part later with Alien uttering the theatre-chuckle-out-loud repeated lines: “spriiiingg breeaakkk fooooooeeevvvaahhh” It takes on a much different meaning than when the idea was first brought up.
That first robbery scene is one of my favorite parts of the movie. The inside the car angle… ugh. Topped only by the scene later with their profane laced recreation of the event, cut with scenes inside the restaurant. Also: Best use of a hammer since “Drive” amirite? Then of course Selena’s line: “Did you really say those things?” It’s not even her first wake up call in the movie at that point… probably when she realized she was well in over her head.
I particularly loved the scene when Alien introduces himself to the girls on the park benches. When he explains how humbling it is to hear his songs being sung back at him. I don’t know if it’s part Cliff Martinez… but why do “Drive” and “Spring Breakers” seem like movies aimed more at the music nuts in the world than movie buffs? “Drive” was about a character he used driving around to music as his escape. “Spring Breakers” use loud party music to help escape. Is that too simple a parallel I’m making? I feel like I’ve read as much in interviews with the directors, but it still makes sense.
Had I not seen “The Master” last year I’d agree best since “Drive”. But now it’s just the best new movie I’ve seen recently.
Aw shit, I still need to see The Master! Amy Adams is my favorite, and I’ve loved Joaquin Phoenix ever since his “busy little bee” speech in Gladiator. “Two Lovers” is the last movie I saw with him in it. I’ll definitely have to check that one out. And I agree that Drive and Spring Breakers feel somehow related. Maybe there could be a genre called “trance-noir” or something like that.
No offense taken, we all know Donny’s rant deserves the highest accolades. I officially rescind my position and will redirect Stereogum’s congratulatory hooker and blow party to his address.
wAAA fUUUU?? I didn’t get this treatment ever!
i love you all
Right back at you, sir.
i love you too man, but seriously
cause it’s the last time.
SPRING BREAK WOO!
you can shove beyonces and justin timberlakes up your ass, ‘Indie Music News’ Stereogum website
biggest problem without downvotes: we can’t bury stupidly contrarian comments and not have to read them
biggest problem is when indie website is covering chart pop. don’t call yourselves indie website then, what’s the deal
You can’t bury them anyway. They’re still there, and the irony is that probably more people end up reading your comment when they see “Hidden due to low comment rating.” Downvoting only sensationalizes what would otherwise be one opinion in a sea of opinions. People are so insecure about their own beliefs and likes/dislikes that they often find themselves unable to verbally refute something and must resort to the downvote to make themselves feel better. While I don’t care how many people read or agree with my posts, it does make me laugh when I think about a bunch of rabid Beyonce fans crying about me dissing pop music.
Copy Paster is just a blatant troll who says whatever he can to get people angry with him. I’d rather not have to see his idiocy, since it reduces my faith in human intelligence.
You have a consistent philosophy, so that’s fine and I don’t care. I think you’re wrong, but I if that’s what you think then fine. Though no-one’s forcing you to read articles about pop music, so maybe you could skip all the articles about musicians you don’t like. I do that with those articles about Pro Era or The Strokes or whatever.
Well, a lot of them I am still basically skipping in terms of actually reading them. I think the site is different now than it was even two months ago, and so yeah, I am taking a more proactive approach. I’m not sure it will result in any change for the better, but if nothing else, it might bother Tom as much as his selling out is bothering me, which is pretty rewarding in and of itself.
your mum surely hasn’t reduced my faith in human sexuality last week
I started moving my cursor to like this comment. Shit.
sad state of affairs indeed
With no voting all comments are equal!!!!!!! What could possible go wrong?
a) Lord of the Flies
b) The French Revolution when voting comes back
c) Why do I feel like a Big Mac?
that legitimately just kind of made me hungry for a big mac
Dick, be honest, you’re just saying that because you’re totally fucking wasted, you ol’ dog you.
Bro, if he is drunk, he’s gonna want Taco Bell not McDonalds
Holy shit that gif is amazeballs.

THAAAAANNNKS OBAMAAaA!
Gotta say, I never expected to see Kings of Leon in the top 10 comments of the week.
Idk bout U guize but I forward the motion of creating and giving the
“dj freshie Award For Lifetime Achievement in Stereogum Commenting”
to Michael_, he deserves it.
*also: I think it should be named the dj freshie award because he is another legendary gum commenter who we’ve lost within the year so that he too does not fade from our consciousness.
Thank You for listening, and to Mr. Lapatine, I hope you consider creating this award as maybe a bi-monthly award. Anyway pce, and R.I.P. Michael_ and dj freshie
they will always exist in our hearts ♥
