My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance are breaking up. “Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing,” wrote the band in a statement on their website last night. “We’ve gotten to go places we never knew we would.” SIGH. Check out the full farewell message below along with some videos of the band’s greatest hits. My Chemical Romance released four studio albums during their 12 years as a band, the most recent being 2010′s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

From the band’s official website:

Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We’ve gotten to go places we never knew we would. We’ve been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We’ve shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure.

  1. Should have broke up years earlier so they could be making a comeback by now like Fall Out Boy. They were definitely one of the few worthwhile mid 2000′s “emo’ artists and one of the few musical acts that I could use to form connections with the scene girls that were so prevalent back then. Ah nostalgia, you’re a cruel mistress.

  2. Geez, Stereogum. Way to rain on my black parade…

  3. I didn’t even know rubberjohnny had a band.

  4. “I’m Not Okay” is still the best music video of all time.

  5. IT’S JUST A SAD SONG WITH NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT A LIFELONG WAIT FOR A HOSPITAL STAY

  6. this is the best thing this band ever did surely

  7. so..good for them i guess?

(that throwback might be too stale, ‘gum in-jokes should be freshness-dated)

  8. OH GOD, NO!!! NOT MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE!!! WHY DID THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN??!!!

  9. Even though everyone would shit on me for listening to them, I enjoyed them immensely when I was younger.

  10. 13-year-old me is sad. Today me is… meh.

  11. It was kind of unfair that they became the poster child for mallcore emo, considering Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was a pretty great rock album, but dressing like a caricature will inevitably turn you into one. Not really bummed out about this split, cuz for one their output has hugely deteriorated since the beginning and two they’ll be back in two years anyway. Cue the inevitable failure solo projects! I bet they’ll all try and be skrillexes (skrilli?)

No voting system though means I can totally say that I still like a lot of their songs HAAAAAAAAA.

    • I don’t really think that their look was any more of a caricature of their genre than their sound is. Gerwald Way isn’t too far from the unloved and neglected child of Billy Corgan and Jack White. I find this band kind of likable, but their sound is pretty much Fall Out Boy with a grittier singer and a guitar player who is quuite a big fan of Brian May.

      • Except they write a totally different kind of song with lyrics that are nothing alike. Besides that, your Brian May comment is spot on.

    • Not so sure they’ll be back in two years. It actually took them a long time to get the last record out. I could see them getting back together at some point, though.

The visual element of the band is part of what I liked about them. Never thought of them as caricatures because they changed the way they looked regularly. Gerard Way was/is a visual artists. That was just part of his “performance”.

  12. Three Cheers was a genuinely great rock album. And with The Black Parade, although (imo) not quite as good, they strived for something bigger and grander (and conceptyer) and mostly succeeded. I, for one, am actually kind of disappointed that there won’t be anything new from them. But at the same time, I didn’t think the last album felt quite right. It was like they were trying too hard, posing as MCR. Not sure there will be as many solo projects as people think. I’d expect Gerard Way to head back into comic books and other visual work, anyway.

  13. Their music has not aged well, even their early stuff sounds pretty crappy.
