Hate to sip the hatorade but “Songs for Silverman” is an enormous let-down. I really want to like it, what do you recommend I do to find enjoyment from it?

It works for me, namesake, so I’m not sure what you’re doing wrong. But yes, I agree with EJ, in that I found the album disappointing on first listen. This might be the first Ben Folds album that I don’t buy. He sounded so much better with a band, and was less of a whiner. And this one doesn’t have “Rockin the Suburbs” to kick things up a bit.
i remember hearing “jerk it out” during the summer of 2003, so it’s cool (and surprising) to finally have it break now. kinda cheap to put the same track on two consecutive albums…but i guess they kind of have to.
I have to respectfully disagree with the anti-Folds folks. I think this is the best studio record he’s done to date (including records with the Five). It’s still distinctly Ben Folds, but it’s more mature and the production is a lot better than Rockin’ the Suburbs. “Jesusland” and “Late” are easily two of the best songs he’s ever written.
I much prefer his cover of “Bitches Ain’t Shit” which is available from iTunes exclusively (as reported here previously)

First, Alex P: I liked “Rockin the Suburbs.”
Second, we Mac users have consolations for using the “other” OS… like better, faster machines.
Third, I first caught on to the Eels with “Souljacker Pt 1″, and I’ve been loving hem ever since (no matter how many animated films use their songs).

EJ, spend some more time w/ ‘Silverman.’ It’s not his best, but worth hearing. Ben’s musicianship especially is more focused (i.e., he’s stopped beating the shit out of his baby grand). And thankfully no silly shtick on this one. I like parental advisory stickers as much as the next guy, but Ben’s jokey tangents were always detractors.

Does no-one feel the love for “Kick You Out”?
Sweden’s Caesars are going to hit big. “Jerk It Out” is more than 3 years old, but a remix is included on Paper Tigers as a result of the iPod campaign. “We Got To Leave’ is just an awesome single. If you get a chance to catch them live during the upcoming US tour, don’t miss ‘em. A phenomenal live band. In fact, along with Long-View (from England,) the Caesars are the best new live band I’ve seen in the past few years.

Give the Ben Folds album a few spins.
I know it sounds disappointing when you first hear it, but it gets better, and is maybe even a more accomplished effort than Rockin’ the Suburbs (I really don’t like the title track on that album).
I could do without ‘Gracie’, but ‘Trusted’, ‘Late’ and ‘Time’ are great.
Other than that, you should check out the 3 EPs he released last year.
