“Love is a magical mystery.” Ya know, like the tour. Just when it looked like Oasis were pulling off from extracting £s of flesh from the Beatles back catalogue, they’re not. The Noel-fronted, moody and swirly first cut from Dig Out Your Soul, “Falling Down,” earned some surprised and begrudging kudos (and some unsurprised and unsurprising blog lashings), but there’s little shock to “Shock The Lightning”: it sounds like Oasis.

At least it sounds like better Oasis than worse Oasis. (I get a residual for every time I type Oasis, in case you were curiOasis.) Dig Out Your Soul is out in the US on 10/7 via Warner.

Oasis.

Liam sounds really good. Better than he has in over a decade.

Oasis has one-upped Radiohead with their new box set

Finally…a great new Oasis song. Has been too long! This will be huge in the stadiums for sure.

      Barf means snow.

You know, stereogum used to be a place for hearing about great indie rock bands, but lately it’s been covering so much shit, it’s starting to smell like a port-a-pot. Who are these people going nuts over Oasis? For all of you, there’s this magazine called Rolling Stone that you might enjoy. Leave stereogum alone.

        • Alan Knut  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2008 0

The people going nuts over Oasis are people who enjoy their music. Sorry you don’t like Oasis.

In case you didn’t know this Oasis album is being released on an Indie label. So technically indie music. Unless you want to call indie a genre, which I must sadly say is how people look at it, then Oasis is indie. “Indie” is becoming more mainstream than Oasis is. Can’t go outside without seeing the new “Indie kid” fashions.

          • Greg  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2008 0

Yes, it doesn’t matter if Oasis is releasing this album on an “indie” label because some indie labels have become very nearly as large as major labels (Rough Trade, for example).

My point is that this song is garbage and its overwhelmingly positive reception here makes me question this blog’s credibility.

Don’t mean to sound like an insufferable music snob, but really, how come people aren’t shitting all over this song? People who “happen” to like Oasis also happen to have terrible taste in music.

          • matt  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2008 0

well, stop reading the blog then. noone is forcing you to. maybe start a blog yourself and that way you can agree 100% with the music being covered.

big vocal performance from liam. best lead off single since do you know what i mean.

  5. Mike  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2008 0

This is exactly why I’d love to hear a Noel solo album. At least they take some chances on the songs he sings. This one sounds like 20 other unremarkable Oasis tracks.

Why change something that works? I don’t think a band needs to change their sound from album to album to still be good. It’s rock ‘ roll, and The Shock of the Lightning is an awesome song. Take it for what it is and stop comparing it to the rest of their catalogue.

“I like this, and you should too!”

“I dislike this, and you should too!”

Mind your own business, and listen to what you like. NOBODY gives a fuck about your opinion.

    Christ, the internet sucks.

got no time for all the enigmatic sighs…”

  9. grover  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2008 0

this is only unsurprising because every first single from an oasis album sounds kinda-good-but-not-great

i am looking forward to the new album though

  10. I’ve never been a big Oasis fan, but I like this cut. Thanks for the post.

  11. humiliation oasis.

  12. the dude  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2008 0

If no one should care about anyone’s opinions, then what the fuck are you posting yours for? Shut the hell up and leave the discussions to the grown-ups.

This is a good song and people are showing they’re appreciation or they’re lack of appreciation for it. Deal with it.

    • Nathan  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2008 0

Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know this was a place for grown-ups.

“The Dude”. Nice grown up name.

      Cunt.

And I object to the use of “Shut the hell up”. That’s grown up language! You’re crazy. The Dude.

  13. I think I’m bi-curiOasis

  14. Just because these guys are huge doesn’t mean I hate them.
I don’t listen to Oasis anymore but I have my favorites.

  15. this is the best lead single in years.

  16. John Dwenter  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2008 0

you guys, i heard this on Indie 103.1 yesterday, it was so good, they played it twice. i heard it again later in the day and was blasting it. They tracked this at Abbey Road do you hear those huge drums, its badass. i dig.

  17. chest_burster  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2008 0

Hating on Oasis is so Standing on the Shoulders of Giants era. Now we’re fully in the “OK to love Oasis again” stage of their career. And seriously, there are no bands that do this sound better. So if you want to hate on Oasis and prop up more disposable indie bands (because, unfortunately, this scene turned cannibal long ago) be my guest, but surviving for almost two decades with a solid line-up and having penned three to four LPs worth of great songs, I think Oasis is more than worthy of a post on a highly-trafficked music blog. Go back to explaining why Tokyo Police Club’s album wasn’t a monster pile of shit and how they’ll still be around in a year or two while I did out Be Here Now and Definitely Maybe for a Brit-rich afternoon orgy of distorted joy. (I’ll play The Great Escape too so Liam and Damon can bitch at each other a little like it’s 1997 again).

  18. I thought the album was called “Dig out your soul”. What’s up with that “own” there on the post?

  19. Rob  |   Posted on Aug 19th, 2008 0

All the Oasis haters really need to grow up….

This song is brilliant, its catchy as hell, without being too obvious, whenever it comes on the radio the next song always sounds awful…..enough said

Just enjoy this song it gets better and better with each listen, the drums are amazing

  20. Pedro  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008 0

This song only comes to prove one thing over and over again, since 1996, i guess: Blur were always so much better.

I agree with Stereogum becoming a place for the common, ho-hum, happy with mainstream garbage that has been visiting the site. As for this new Oasis song, it’s better than most of their past garbage, but really people, come on, there is a whole world of music out there that kills it. Here is a great website that keeps it real and I’m pretty down with their opinions in music too. http://www.indierockreviews.com. They have some great, exclusive content. But who knows maybe after they get tons of money to back them they will start putting crap on their site too. Everyone sells out. Right?

  22. Greg  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2008 0

Surprise, surprise, this sounds nothing like the Beatles despite what the reviewer said.

  23. Chris  |   Posted on Sep 26th, 2008 0

Music, music, music. Music is music. Why should it matter who is covered? A site can del with Fleet Foxes and TV on the Radio and The Domino Sisters as well as Oasis, U2, or Green Day. No site should be elitist one way or the other. RS is just as guilty as any indie site that refues to cover bands that have a record deal or permanent homes. Don’t be one of those people who criticize Of Montral of selling out. At least they can keep creating music and putting on fatastic shows..
