Coldplay played BAM tonight for VH1′s Storytellers series. The band was eager to please and the packed house ate it up. Setlist…

  • “Square One”
  • “Politik”
  • “Yellow”
  • “Speed Of Sound”
  • “Warning Sign”
  • “Clocks”
  • “The Scientist”
  • “In My Place”
  • “Fix You”
  • “Till Kingdom Come”
  • “Clocks” Take 2
Some stories…
“Yellow” title was inspired by the Yellow Pages (“In an alternative universe this song would be called Playboy“) … “Speed Of Sound” was an attempt to rip-off Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” … Will initially thought “Clocks” was rubbish … “Till Kingdom Come” was written for Johnny Cash … Chris enjoys Magnolia bakery and fair trade.

No Gwynnie tonight. Perhaps tomorrow, for the $1500 (!) ticket holders.

Previously:

  • O.C. buzz for “Fix You”
  • Formula for “Speed Of Sound”
  • Theories about X&Y cover

    2. I was at the show in Boston.

      FANTASTIC show.

    3. Sorry, not much of a Coldplay fan…I prefer a much more pompous and self-important English group like Oasis (simply to carry out American stereotype).

Holla atcha boy, whoop whoop…and all that jazz

    4. why go to see coldplay when you could’ve seen NIN last night?

Why go to see Coldplay when you could’ve seen Catherine Wheel 10 years ago?

Liam Gallagher said it best: if Coldplay ever show up in rock n’ roll heaven in any shape or form “you’ll know its been f–kin’ rigged.”

    6. Noel Gallagher  |   Posted on May 17th, 2005

Don’t listen to a thing that bloody fucknob says. Wanker.

    7. I don’t think I like any band $1500 worth. that’s rent. I hardly even like any band $15 worth.

Chris Martin, is slowly becoming the 21st century version of Sting. I wouldn’t be suprised if 15 years from now we see Chris on Jaguar commercial or if we hear him on some talk show talking about his and Gwenyie’s tantric sex life.

    10. they played clocks twice? jesus christ. im not sure what it is about that song, its popularity surprises me. i got parachutes and arobtth when they came out, but i’m just not feeling x&y. chris martin seems to have become a caricature of himself…i dont blame him (gwyneth+money is tough to turn down), but i wish he hadnt.

    11. what, no pictures? Scott, you’re slipping. don’t worry, i got you covered. I know you probably would like to keep your job:

“Clocks” is a crap version of Doves’ “Pounding”

    13. Interesting. I always thought ‘Yellow’ was inspired by the color of urine. In fact, I sorta imagined that the entire Coldplay catalog might have been inspired by various manifestations of human waste.

    14. call me crazy, but they probably played “clocks” twice to get a better version to air on TV. it is, after all, vh-1′s storytellers.

    15. greg  |   Posted on May 17th, 2005

Seriously, it shouldn’t be such a surprise to me that people are so eager to settle for less, but come on – Coldplay is basically Travis with a better manager and record label agenda.

Apt comment above RE: Sting/Jaguar and how this banal “rock” outfit so appropriately lays in bed with the rest of middle-of-the-road America and it’s quest for stylish, utter mediocrity.

Of course, this is what we get: in the aftershock of realizing the Radiohead joke was on us, Coldplay were there to reap the benefits.

So now we have two bands of insufferable twats out there, both pretending to be things they aren’t.

      What fun!

    16. in the interview available streaming on oasis’ site Noel says he loves coldplay. who listens to liam anyways?

      such a boring band.

    19. >Chris Martin, is slowly becoming the 21st century version of Sting.

gold! on the money. please god, let Coldplay soon fade surely into obscurity. most overrated band, ever. although, currently enjoying hilarious attempt to “de-throne” U2 – keep trying.

    20. Andy  |   Posted on May 17th, 2005

I don’t get it. First all of you complain about how U2 sucks now. No you think Coldplay sucks because they are trying to “de-throne” U2 (which I’m sure is something they didn’t plan on doing).

For Christ Sake, can we stop hating things because pitchfork tells us to? I remember when we judged things on the level of talent not what subculture it associated you with.

yeah, yeah, you read this then laugh, then turn back up your Arcade Fire and feel like you are cutting edge.

      Disgusting.

    21. who is coldplay, and why should i care?

    22. Josh  |   Posted on May 18th, 2005

Alright all you little fuck bags. I used to have ill feelings towards Coldplay but I must admit that they are actually very talented. So you are entitled to your opinion……… even though you’re WRONG!
Nooww…..you rotten bastard of a pseudo- intellectual cunt mother fucker, do NOT… ever … try to belittle Radioheads contribution to the world of music. With the release of OK Computer they stunned the world with their unique blend of beauty and disfunction. They jumped leaps and bounds ahead of their peers with honest sophistication and continue to be one step ahead of everybody with each release, staying true pioneers of aural art.

    23. Aural art? Are you serious? Does Pro Tools make some sort of penile interface now that literally transforms wanking into sound? Not just sound… but Aural Art! If so, I would agree that Radiohead are true pioneers – masters if you will. But not for the reasons you think.

Hell, I don’t mind Radiohead one way or the other. Some of their songs are OK, I guess. But do you really think you are justified in calling anyone who doesn’t like this band a cunt? Really?

    24. rachel  |   Posted on May 18th, 2005

haha thats funny. good one. but i like radiohead. but that’s still funny.

    25. ohhell,imchimingin..  |   Posted on May 18th, 2005

seriously. travis. in the bands taht actually WRITE GOOD SONGS and play them well in studio and live. the band we will talk about in 20 years, like chris bell, nick drake, etc. will be travis.

    26. Dean  |   Posted on May 18th, 2005

I was at the VH1 Coldplay Storytellers show and it was great. The reason they played Clocks twice is because the camera crew messed up the first time around. And I must say that they nailed the song both times around….if not better the second time. (They didn’t go half ass with it after having already played it earlier).

I like the songs they performed off the new album….Speed of Sound is officially in my head. Scientist was on the mark. I only wish they had played Trouble and Don’t Panic. I guess there was only so much they could pack into that 1 hour time slot. I did like the song they wrote for Johnny Cash.

And in regard to earlier posts, Radiohead is a great band. There’s some really solid tracks on Hail To The Thief including “Sail To The Moon” and “Sit Down, Stand Up”. This only goes to show that the band is still going strong. I also feel that Amnesiac hasn’t fully gotten the credit it deserves for being a great album.

    27. greg  |   Posted on May 18th, 2005

Radiohead is a pioneer alright. . .at whining and fussing their way down the roads already dug, trenched, paved and franchised by the likes of Brian Eno, Faust, Can, Cabaret Voltaire (and Richard Kirk solo), Rhys Chattham, Soft Machine. . .

How arrogant and mypoic to get on a soap box and sing the praises of a band that merely does what has been done before, albeit not in the 90s or 00s by other groups that mug and preen on the cover of Melody Maker. You bely your lack of historical context and understanding with your amusing little tirade.

OK Computer? BRILLIANT record, and despite how disparate and “experimental” their subsequent releases have been, this is their true, inarguable gorgeous original masterpiece.

Everything else since has been second hand dreck that anyone with a decent record collection and maybe the first two volumes of Trouse Press reference books would know better than to trumpet.
They’ve completely lost the plot and fool millions of unsuspecting lambs that they’re doing something special and reactive and meaningful.

But, hey – people make mistakes.

I can’t believe we are even questioning the talent od ‘Coldplay’ or radiohead or that matter, i havent heard much from the upcomimg x&y but i saw the sydney 2003 gig live (the one on dvd) and if that doesnt get your blood pumping your fucked and have issues!

And if ur just an uber alternative tool that cant like anything slightly successful and is just looking to bag musicians who have got it right well then fuck you and u have bigger issues still…

Anyway, anyone who has the balls to name their kid after a piece of fruit is a winner in my books

    29. >First all of you complain about how U2 sucks now. No you think Coldplay sucks because they are trying to “de-throne” U2 (which I’m sure is something they didn’t plan on doing).

no no, i heart U2. coldplay’s pathetic attempts at emulating their every move is what fuels my hatred of chris martin.

Coldplay = BORING Old Gay Guy Music OR Fratboy/Sorority girl’s favorite kind of shit.
      Blech..

      You= fuckwit OR tool/knob

    32. gimme  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2005

just so coldplay on snl – snooooze – really is like sucky sting/soft ballad david craptthews aesthetic – just bland SUV cruisin’ music for that type of crowd – in a word FM pap..

can’t believe the hoopla on this thread about radiohead – without question a very good band – some ups and downs but still really good and yes they have lots of forebears that are just as good if not better..

    33. grokboid  |   Posted on May 23rd, 2005

Coldplay is not 100% bad – just unimportant. as the family tree of music spreads through time, there is no branching node with the tag “Coldplay” sitting there. to me, they are the sum of their influences and not much else.

There are, however, nodes for Brian Eno, REM, U2, Television, The Smiths, Radiohead, etc. artists who somehow made something new and unmistakable out of the molecules of the past. once can still “hear” these artist resonating decades on in other bands.

i’m not sure bands can aspire to do this consciously. it’s really complex.

it does sadden me to hear any artist talk about being “in the best band” or aspiring to be “as good as Mozart” or whatever. that’s just ego or something.

    34. ados  |   Posted on May 26th, 2005

      Dear grokbold?
I think he aspired to be the best band in the world (a big difference from actually stating that they are). Plus whats wrong with a bit of desire to be the best you can and produce music to the best of your ability, its reassuring to their fans at the very least.
I agree there is no such thing as the worlds best band, yet there is in every one and each of our minds point of view.
So correct me if im wrong but wouldnt you say that attempting to be the best band they can (and the best in the world in their fans eyes) is a much more noble cause and less arrogant and selfish ambition than bands such as oasis and the vines who have let their big arse heads and shithouse attitudes get in the way of their very obvious talent and potential.
A dissapointment to most but even a greater dissapointment to their fans, agreed?
Look im not attmepting to make you like Colplays music, thats your call, but dont be saddend by coldplay cos i can tell you they make their millions of fans (yes add the zeros) very happy, for actually giving a shit!

    35. Coldplay blows horribly. Sure they can sing and dance but thats all they should do. Why should they try to influence peoples political thoughts when they have such a low education. If they decide to go to college and take some classes I might give them five minutes of my time but until then they can just shut up and keep their unintelligent thoughts to themselves instead of going on Jay Leno.
      p.s. that song sucks ass.

    36. harday  |   Posted on Jun 2nd, 2005

listen more to his expression of his lyrics… it´s feelings into it, more than any other band… that is all I have to say…

    37. grokboid  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2005

How one responds to music, emotionally and intellectually, depends upon past exposures and the degree to which one recognizes the motifs, lyrics, and chord patterns as being original. There is an unmistakable rush when the new is experienced.

For some people, Phil Collins (to employ an overused example) was once new and meaningful. Phil is a great drummer and a successful songwriter. I am sure there are people who shed very real tears listening to his music as he nursed them through hard times…

Do I say these subjective experiences are not real or meaningful? No, i do not. I simply say that good old Phil cannot get *me* there because the level of originality is not enough based on my listening history.

Enter Coldplay. A good band, but not desert island material.

To be fair, artists working in the public spotlight and marrying movie stars are under tremendous scrutiny and pressure. To remain real in this context seems almost impossible. Which is why most bands suck ass after their first couple albums.

Kinda makes the Beatles all the more remarkable in retrospect.
