Last night’s itiniary:

Dave Matthews Band (Storytellers) @ BAM
Music was great, but the crowd ruined it for me. (Yes, it’s Boyd’s birthday. We heard you the first six times.) No wiggle dancing in Brooklyn!

  • Too Much
  • Dreamgirl
  • American Baby
  • Where Are You Going
  • Louisiana Bayou
  • Crush
  • You Might Die Trying
  • Steady As We Go
  • Ants Marching
  • All Along The Watchtower

Gang Of Four @ Irving Plaza
I needed to wash the Hootie off with a blazing set from post-punk pioneers. Arrived late and couldn’t see anything from the back. But these guys sound just like Franz Ferdinand! They’re gonna be huuuuuuuuuuge. Thanks Gerald, Greg, and Glenn for helping w/ the setlist. And DJ Mandel for actually grabbing it after the show.

  • Return The Gift
  • Not Great Men
  • Ether
  • I Parade Myself
  • Paralyzed
  • What We All Want
  • Anthrax
  • Why Theory?
  • At Home He’s A Tourist
  • He’d Send In The Army
  • Natural’s Not In It
  • To Hell With Poverty!
  • We Live As We Dream. Alone
  • Damaged Goods

Anyone see them after at Tribeca Grand? I heard JC Chasez was there (also one of the Strokes was at Irving). The band plays Irving again tonight. After-party at Atomique @ Lit w/ DJ set by Andy Gil.

2nd encore was “I Found that Essence Rare.”

Thankyou for not being too cool for the dave matthews band.

    3. I agree with Beverly. I am not ashamed to say that I love DMB, even though it may not be the “hippest” thing in the world. If you are a musician and haven’t seen their live show, you are missing out. They are probably the most gifted group you will ever see take the stage.

I’m not too impressed with “Stand Up” though. Maybe it will grow on me, but I think it will end up being another throw-away album like “Everyday.”

Dave Matthews ruined his carreer by not having any restraint. I am not talking about jamming. I am talking about production. His albums since before these crowded streets have been shitty sounding and cheesy. Now he is trying to emulate the sound of mainstream hiphop and it sounds worse than ever. SUPER HARSH TOO. And his lyrics went from confident and interesting to heavy-handed and phony.

    5. totally agree w/ the gay dude in the military. dmb has gone to shit lately.

Gonna be huge? Sounds like FF? These guys were one of the pioneers in british post-punk in the late 70′s and early 80′s. When punk kinda died out, they tried a more dancable sound in 1984, then they went away. They did a couple of (fair, not great) reunion albums recently, but now the original line up is touring doing mostly older stuff (thankfully). Their first album, “Entertainment” (from 1979) has just been re-released. It may be one of my all time favorites. Everyone should own it!!!!!

Dave Matthews Band is currently the best live act touring. Glad you had a good time. I have seen them 54 times and still have never gotten sick of them. Not as good as Phish was though.

Yeah, stand up is pretty much crap as far as i know. i’ve only streamed it once but nothing really grabbed me.

Re: FF reference, gonna be huge, etc. He was being facetious (ya know, a bit of humor).

    10. jerry’s dead
      phish sucks
      get a job

    11. Lit sucks, but “Paralyzed” is great.

    12. My favorite part of the DMB encore was when they poured 1000 gallons of shit into the Hudson

    13. I saw Gang of Four @ Coachella, and they were sublime. Glad to see they are getting back into it. ‘Damaged Goods’ is a fantastic song.

Sorry. As I get older, I lose my sense of humor. I gotta learn to lighten up.

The new Dave Matthews Band album is one of the best more recently released albums; the only problem that I think DMB has is the obnoxious following of high school kids who think they’re cool because everyone thinks they’re cool. The new album is an interesting conglomeration of older sounding Dave Matthews with a more African (I think, Paul Simon-esque influence). The America Baby intro is far from pop-y and I have faith that DMB will continue to make new good music. They’re one of the few younger bands around with any “staying power.”
